Typical instances are the shadow magicks and monsters, which, even if succesfully disbelieved, produce some substance (the monsters appear with very low scores, the spells cause small damage). I would include Invisibility in the second type: it's some kind of light-bending or reflection technique (fantasy physics, of course). I do not see any "phasing into or in between Ethereal". Otherwise, two Invisible mages would be able to see each other as if both of them were visible!! (and I don't think that was ever stated in xD&D rules)... The Detect Invisibility in D&D has some interesting uses, like the ability to see through camouflage (the kind bestowed by potions, robes or cloaks), which implies revealing perfect chromatic imitation, something which is, definitely, not mind-illusion related. Incidentally, it also lets you see Ethereal creatures, like ghosts, but only when they're around you (that is, as per the oldie Manual of the Planes, standing on the Border Ethereal), it is, in Ethereal state but interacting with the Prime environment. IIRC, some Psionics rules (I think it was in the ill-memoried Skills and Powers 2nd ed revision) stated that the psionic version of invisibility affected minds, and that each "target" could try to save and see the psionicist... It's also interesting that 2nd ed has an "Invisible to Undead" spell, but that does not prevent the regular Invisibility to work with them, it's only a specialized (and thus lower level, like Invisible to Animals)version of it. The whole business of assigning schools is tricky. IMC at least, I understand Invisibility as Phantasm/Alteration... In quite a few published adventures there are instances in which Invisibility can be used to bypass non-living boundaries, like magic mouth alarms.
