I'm running a 1E game in Mystara, but I noticed looking through the monster manuals that the 1E monsters tend to have relatively few hit dice... 12 HD being the general limit for tough monsters, with a few exceptions. This holds true for the MM, MM2, and FF. (I'm ignoring dinosaurs, dragons, and fiends, which exist in all editions as tough critters.) Many Mystaran monsters do exceed 12HD, with many as high as 20-30 HD, and at least one (giant whale) of 106 HD! While most creatures that exist in both systems are the same in both systems, the few that are different are generally tougher in Mystara (krakens, whales, dragons, dragon turtles, rocs, etc) The only monsters in this range in AD&D are demons and devils, with uniques topping the scales at around 20-40 HD. Of course Mystara also has uniques in this range -- the monster rulers. (The MMCA reduces the power of some mystaran monsters for use with AD&D; gargantua for example have only half the hit dice) Anyway, it looks to me like Mystara is generally a higher powered setting. I'm wondering if AD&D characters are going to have a harder time meeting the challenges in the setting, considering that the standard AD&D critters are generally weaker. Or maybe high level AD&D characters generally go up against demons and devils, so it balances out? Those who have used AD&D 1E (or 2E) in Mystara, did you notice any balance issues in comparison to BD&D? I'm just wondering what I should expect as DM... I don't want to accidentally slaughter the party. I'm also going to use a 1:1 conversion to save myself work, so the NPCs the characters meet will be up to 36th level. This shouldn't be an issue as long as I don't use the full weapon mastery, since a 36th level BD&D fighter has the same THAC0 as a 20th level AD&D fighter. Note: this is NOT a AD&D vs BD&D "which is better" question, so let's try to refrain from flames here. I'm wondering about the practical aspects of running a game using AD&D but using interesting Mystaran monsters from BD&D. I'm also not interested in discussing 3E since I'm not running it. That's interesting -- I heard once that a half dozen or so Alphatian wizards once attempted to conspire for all of them to get together for breakfast in one place -- and that that conspiracy failed. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 22:02:15 -0100 From: Redwolf Subject: Regarding Urt I was looking through some of my old D&D books (Set5 The Immortals Dm's = Guide) and I came across the creature known as the Megaliths.
