For the sake of giving a full picture, there are several fighting monks orders in Bellayne (Savage Coast). Tortles, Rakasta, Humans and Elves are all common in these orders. As for fan resources, Marco Dalmonte wrote a long list of martial arts schools of Mystara (http://dnd.starflung.com/mastyle.html) that includes several Mystic-classed MA masters. -- Giampaolo Agosta http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Sep 2002 16:52:50 +0200 From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Havard=20Faanes?= Subject: Blackmoor Update Hello, after a short break I am back and have updated my Blackmoor website. I have removed previous mistakes concerning the Halflings and added some info about the other demihumans of Blackmoor in the new file Demihumans of Blackmoor. Check it out at www.geocities.com/havardfaa/blackmoor.html As usual, comments are welcome. If anyone else feels like writing something about Blackmoor, i'd be honored to host it at my site. Thanks Alex, that was very helpful. As for the Insiders of Freeport, the = Drow (500 of 'em) are orchestrating the whole takeover. In the PWA series, and WotI, the floating islands are described as having been levitated with extremely powerful magic; they did not sink with Alphatia, but instead remained in the sky. As Ar, later Palartarkan, performed the deed to attain Immortality, the magics used must indeed have been very powerful, possibly along the lines of the so-called "10th level spells" (i.e., spells beyond the power of modern mages to control). The reason why I asked all this is because I'm finishing up an old project of mine, a mini-gaz of Floating Ar, set in AC 1000. This would complement work already done for Haven, Frisland, Bettellyn, Randel, and Theranderol, Arogansa. Since we're on the topic, if anyone has done work for the ground-level towns of Ar (like Reer, Ceafem, et al), contact we privately. I'd be more than interested in what you've done, and with your leave, I'll incorporate some or all of it in the product (crediting others where appropriate, of course). Hi all,

Gruess Gott Freund! ;)

one of my players wishes to play a monk and since I generally try not to
bar any choices for them I wonder how to bring one into the campaign. Darth
has made various suggestions on non-human monks but where could a human
monk be from? I have not made up my mind if said monk will be a pure
fighting monk, mostly fighting with some clerical ability, vice versa or a
psionicist monk. Any suggestions which immortal a clerical monk would turn to?

Well, human monks may be from mainly Ochalea (China/Japan), Thyatis (Rome), Isle of Dawn (got some Ochalean, Thyatian and Alphatian influence), Ylari (Arabia), Sind (India), Ierendi (Cuba/Hawaii), Pearl Islands (Madagascar), Hule (Turkey), Ethengar (Mongolia/Korea) or Glantri (there's a monk's cloister up there too).

Obviously with each nation comes a martial style of reference:
Ochalea: kung-fu, karate, jujiitsu, aikido, sumo
Thyatis: wrestling, pankration, boxing
Isle of Dawn: mix the two above and add muay-thai
Ylari: aikido, boxing
Sind & Hule: kickboxing, boxing
Ierendi & Pearl Islands: capoeira, shudo
Ethengar: tae kwan do, kung-fu, aikido

For more info on martial arts in Mystara, see this reference article I wrote a while back:

We've argued this before, and it's a real problem that the Floating Islands stayed up even though the red sun of the Hollow World went out... Last time we discussed I think we reached the conclusion that since the red sun is basically a permanently open gate to Sphere of Energy (from which the NoS draws power), the HW red sun might have been affected more strongly than other Immortal magic, and that while no Immortal spells could be cast during this time, permanent Immortal enchantments (such as those Palartarkan put on his floating islands) did not fail... That's the best explanation I've heard so far, but I'll admit its a real problem. In short, Allston goofed and forgot about those floating islands... - The Stalker ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Sep 2002 23:26:08 -0700 From: Andrew Theisen Subject: Re: Floating Ar At 02:04 PM 9/16/02 -0400, you wrote: > > As Ar, later Palartarkan, performed the deed to attain Immortality, the > magics used must indeed have been very powerful, possibly along the lines > of the so-called "10th level spells" (i.e., spells beyond the power of > modern mages to control). Or (for those users of 3rd Edition D&D) Epic Spells from the Epic Level Handbook would also cover this. I was toying with the idea of working up the exact spell Palartarkan used (by working with the spell seeds given) but haven't done so yet. I imagine it would be similar to the Raise Island epic level spell in the book. As for another Epic Level Alphatian spell- the Sleep Curse spell from WotI seems ripe for Epic Level translation... ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 15 Sep 2002 to 16 Sep 2002 (#2002-243) ****************************************************************
