Could anyone give a short synopsis of what happens in the novels and in what time period are they set? Even though we are playing Dungeons and DRAGONS, dragons have always had a minimal role in Mystara. It would be interesting to learn about the only real Mystarasque dragon-product (the bestiary of dragons and giants was a generalised product, I think). How many of you have used the gemstone dragon species in your campaigns? I never quite liked the idea, and have faded them out IMC. But this may just be an obsolete aversion. What kind of adventure ideas have you built upon them? Where do you think gemstone dragons might live? After all, "the Known World" is pretty heavily populated, and dragons in general seem to be very rare - gemstone ones should be even more so? Ville ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 03:10:06 -0500 From: George Hrabovsky Subject: Re: The Dragonlord series In my game dragons were originally meant to be one of the three guardian races against the forces of Nightmare. They were cursed as a race by those same forces. All of this is based on the dragon-power articles published by Bruce Heard in The Dragon (mostly the article "From Hatchling to Immortal") in which dragons perform a series of life-altering rituals to gain power. When a dragon is sleeping, they are actually traveling the Outer Planes gaining mysterious lore and supernatural powers (the exact details of this were never specified in the article, so I took the idea and ran with it). Even a small dragon that has taken one of these journeys will have some sort of special power (permanent Immunity as the spell, Truesight, etc.) In short, as they ought to be, dragons are among the greatest allies or most terrible foes. When a dragon increases in size they gain an intimate connection to the land. They are aware of major happenings within their radius of awareness. When they become huge they can exercise some limited control over their radius of awareness (only if it based in their homes). Anyway, this has become longer than I anticipated. Most of the action takes place in Glantri (at that time called Braejr), but also in Alfheim, the secret valley of the Dragons in Wendar and in the Wyrmsteeth Mountains. It is the story of young Thelvyn Foxeyes who gains Blackmoor artifacts which allow him to become the Dragonlord in order to defend his country against evil Dragons. However, he eventually realizes that he is a Dragon himself and in the end he becomes the Stardragon, the Patron of all Lawful Dragons. He also has to protect Mystara from an invading army of gemstone dragons from an other plane and their evil master. I agree that Dragons play too small a role in the Mystara setting. IMC Dragon societies exist in the Wyrmsteeth mountains (Mostly Chromatic/Chaotic), and in the Brasol Mountains of Davania (Gold and other metallic species). This is vaguely inspired by the Mystaros timeline, but also other sources. Outside these main senters, Dragons live alone or with one strong dragon and a few others serving him. Three dragon magazine articles deal with Mystaran dragons. The Bestiary of Giants and Dragons is written as a generic supplement, but to me its Mystara anyways. A while back I gave a file with my detailing of the Grand Army of Glantri (or the GAG). Here is a updated version with a few more units, and a DND3e minor detail change. I also plan on adding two more units- Malachie's army (as soon as I get PC4 in my clutches) and something about the aerial units. Here goes- The (truly) Grand Army of Glantri (G.A.G) 1014AC Ranks: “Warden of the Marches” - one of the division commanders (princes), formally in charge of the entire Glantrian Grand Army. The Warden of the Marches is Malachie du Marais starting AC 1017. Jaggar von Drachenfels is the Warden from 994 untill then. Army Commander (Prince)- the princes are referred to by their formal names, and not by a military rank. (The only exception is Prince Jaggar von Drachenfels, who allows his soldiers to call him Warden or Marshal). Brigadier - The commander of the division in the prince’s absence. The de Facto leader of the division in times of peace, or when the prince is incapable of commanding his/her troops. Deputy Army Commander- this is traditionally a noble (count) if the prince’s choosing. However usually the prince appoints a fighter (knight) or arcaner who is well versed in the art of war making. The formal duties of the Deputy Army Commander are commanding the rear and handling logistics. If both prince and Brigadier are absent or dead the Deputy Army Commander becomes Brigadier. Head Mage- A highly experienced Arcaner (magic user 9 and up, possibly a noble) who is in charge of coordinating the magical attacks and defenses of the army. The Head Mage advises the army commander. Some armies do not have a Head Mage. Never is there more than one though. Staff Colonels- Officers who are logistic and operation advisors for the Prince/Brigadier. 2-3 Staff Colonels exist in every division (army). Knight- A highly experienced Mundaner (fighter 9 and up) who joins a specific division. The knight has no commanding role. He fights and advises the army commander. There could be more than one knight in an army, or there could be none at all. Colonel- An officer heading a regiment. (Default F8) Deputy Colonel- The second in command of a regiment Captain- The commander of a Banner (regular or special). Captains of elite units are considered higher ranked than captains of regular banners. Adjutants- Officers advising the regiment commander (colonel) in logistics and operations. Each regiment has 2 or 3 aids. Sergeants- commanders of “Departments” of 20-40 troops. There are 3-6 sergeants in a banner. Deca - the senior soldier in a class, in charge of 10 troops. There are 2-4 Decas in a department. Private- a common soldier. Privates in elite units are sometimes considered higher in rank than even sergeants of regular banners. Army’s formation and breakdown The Grant Army of Glantri is organized into 9 “armies” or divisions at peace time. Each division is led by a prince. In addition Jagger is planning the formation of a proper air fleet. When fully operational this fleet will answer directly to the “Warden of the Marches”. Every army has between 750 to 1050 troops at full strength, 850 to 1150 troops if counting the logistic banner. The formal commander of each army is the prince, but most of the times the prince is replaced by a brigadier (see above). Each army is divided into 2 or 3 regiments and 0-2 independent special banners. Each regiment has between 240 and 360 troops in full strength, divided into 2-3 banners. All in all an army has between 6 to 8 banners. Each Banner consists of up to 120 troops. Special elite banners sometimes have much lower numbers. A banner breaks down into 3-6 departments. Each department can have up to 40 troops. It is divided into groups of ten, called classes. Each class has 10 troops (always). One of the class is chosen as the class’s Deca. * for lack of space I sometimes neglect to note- mounted infantries ride riding horses, cavalries ride war horses, unless stated otherwise. The first army- Prince Jaggar’s Division Jaggar’s first army is fully mounted, and is the best equipped and trained division in the Grand Army of Glantri. Soldiers of Deca status and higher have magical items (about 12%). Jaggar and Rolf have many constructs that they can add to the unit (stats not included). All officers of the first army are experienced Aalbanese fighters. Most soldiers come from either Aalban or the capitol, but minorities abound. Jaggar prefers to lead his division himself. Soldiers of Deca status and higher have magical items (about 10%). Most troops are from Bergdhoven but not all are Flaems. Officers are all of Flaemish descent. Julliana mostly leaves the command of her army to the brigadier. The third army has a special unit of battle mages that can turn the tides of any battle. Also, the third army has a large unit of heavy artillery, that can be moved across roads all over the country and beyond. Army Commander - Princess Julliana Vlaardoen (W13, Fire Ellementalist2, riding pegasus) Brigadier - (F15, golden half-plate armor +4, two handed sword +4 riding war horse.) Soldiers of sergeant status or higher and the scout unit have magical items (about 5%). About 60% of the troops are elves from Belcadiz and Satolas and about 40% are humans from Belcadiz area and the capitol. The humans and elves get along preety well, as long as they are divided into two regiments. Officers are all Belcadizian - humans and elves. Carnelia will prefer leading her army herself as she is a warrior heroin among her people. Army Commander - Princess Carnelia de Belcadiz (W20/F12, Wokan5, rapier+2, riding war horse) Brigadier - (W9/F14, plate armor +1, rapier +3+5 against orcs, riding war horse.) Soldiers of sergeant status or higher have magical items (about 3%). All of the troops are humans from Boldavia and the north-eastern dominions. In times of war Morphail will lead the division himself only if there is a serious threat to Boldavia and Glantri, or he has some interest in the fighting. In any case, Morphail, Szasza and Boris will only work at night, leaving the command to the Brigadier during the night. As master of necromancy, Morphail has a few surprises up his sleeve that are not part of the regular military division. Army Commander - Prince Morphail Gorevitch-Woszlani (W19necromancer, Death Master 5th, riding war horse) Brigadier - Gustav Staliniov (F14, plate armor +2, bastard sword+1, war horse) Deputy Army Commander- sir Boris Gorevitch-Woszlani (W15, Death Master 3, riding war horse) Head Mage- lady Szasza Markovitch (M12, Wokan3 on flying broom) Knight- Leonid Guncharov (F16, banded mail+2, lance+2, long sword+2, shield, riding war horse) Fighting troops: 879 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 989 Headquarters: Fort Tchernovodsk Summer deployment: banners 1 and 4 at Vladimirov, banners 2-3 in Fort Tchernovodsk, banner 5 at Rymskigrad, banner 6 at Estoniarsk, banner 7 at Igorov. Only officers have magical items (about 1%). This unit’s strength lies in the battle enthusiasm (which sometimes verges on the berserk) of its Kaelic foot soldiers (who form most of the units troops). Brannart always never bothers to check on his army. In case of emergency he will defend his tower using his undead pawns. Aiden McDonald, the brigadier, and the prince’s son Duncan, have all the power and support in the army. The Fellowship Of the Claymore has infiltrated all ranks of this army and probably has more influence on it than the council. However, the six army will defend Glantri against outside threats when needed. Army Commander - Prince Brannart McGregor (W20-lich necromancer,Death Master4, riding Nightmare) Brigadier - Aiden McDonald (F18, full-plate armor+3, two handed claymore+3, war horse.) Deputy Army Commander- sir Duncan McGregor (F20,claymore+5, banded armor +3, riding war horse) Head Mage- lord Eeachin McDougall (M12, Dracologyst3 on pegasus) Knight- sir Bruce (C20, of Tarastia, mace+3, full-plate armor+2, shield+2 on war horse) Fighting troops: 924 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 1056 Headquarters: Skullhorn Pass Camp Summer deployment: banners 1-2 at Bramyra, banners 3-4 in Glenmoorloch, banners 5-6 at Skullhorn Pass camp, banner 7 at Crownguard banner 8 at Glantri city Winter deployment: Banner 1 at Glenargyll, banner 2 at Glenmoorloch, banner 3-4 at Skullhorn Pass camp, banners 5-6 in Crownguard, banners 7-8 at Bramyra War deployment: offence. Troops of Deca status and up have magical items, as well as special units (about 25%). Although Carlotina trusts her brigadier, she takes active command of her division whenever she can, trying to stop the humanoids of the broken lands and the Great Crater. Carlotina’s army is sometimes assisted by other divisions, but this hardly helps to relieve her troops. Carlotina’s division is entirely made up of Erewan elves. They are highly skilled as the result of years of continuous wars with the humanoids. Army Commander - Princes Carlotina Erewan (W18, Cryptomancer5, pegasus) Brigadier- Danelian (F14/W12, chain mail +5, long sword+2, short bow +3, pegasus) Deputy Army Commander- Qenildor Erewan (F9/W8, lance +3 long sword+5, breastplate +2, pegasus) Head Mage- Bethys Erewan (W11, Cryptomancer3, on pegasus) Knight- none Fighting troops: 879 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 999 Headquarters: Tower Ellerovyn Summer deployment: banners 1 and 5-6 at Ellerovyn, banner 2-3 at Erendyl, banner 4 at Nyra, banner 7 at Hightower. Winter deployment: banners 1-3 at Ellerovyn, banners 4-5 at Erendyl, banner 6 at Hightower, Banner 7 at Nyra. War deployment: defense of southern border, west of the Vesubia river, south of Westheath. Banner 1 “the Sylvan Company” - 70 elite airborne cavalries (F4) lances, long swords+1, shields and chain mails+1 on pegasi; 50 elite airborne arcaner knights (F4/W4 equiptment same as above); 8 sergeants (F6/W6); 1 captain (F9/W9) Western regiment: Banner 2- 120 mounted archers {must dismount to fire} (F3) long bows, short swords, daggers, leather armor; 4 sergeants (F4/W4); 1 captain (F5/W5) Banner 3- 120 mounted infantries (F2/W2) long swords, daggers, shields, leather armor; 4 sergeants (F4/W4); 1 captain (F5/W5) Banner 4- 120 light cavalries (F3) lances, long swords, daggers, shields, leather armor; 4 sergeants (F4/W4); 1 captain (F5/W5) Eastern regiment: Banner 5- 120 mounted archers {must dismount to fire} (F3) long bows, short swords, daggers, leather armor; 4 sergeants (F4/W4); 1 captain (F5/W5) Banner 6 and 7 each - 120 medium cavalries (F3) lances, long swords, daggers, shields, chain armor; 4 sergeants (F4/W4); 1 captain (F5/W5) The eighth army- Princess Isidore’s Division (le Huitieme Armee) Isidore’s army is one of the newest and less skilled army in Glantri. The division is about 50% mounted. Soldiers of sergeant status and above have magical items (about 2%). The army’s troops originate from the principality of Nouvelle Averoigne and from the capitol area. Isidore has not yet learned how to lead an army, and prefers not to head her army herself. This all may change in the face of war. Army Commander - Princes Isidore d’Amberville (W13, riding war horse) Brigadier - Bernard de Noussene (F16, two handed sword+2, dagger+4, plate armor+1, riding war horse) Deputy Army Commander- Andre David (Ranger12, saber+2, dagger+2, studded leather armor +3, buckler+1, on war horse) Head Mage- Formally: Genevieve de Saphora (W20, Alchemist5, on magic broom), actually the army has no head mage as Genevieve is not very friendly with Isidore. Soldiers of sergeant status or higher have magical items (about 2%). Most of the troops are from the hardy stock of the Sablestone area, and so are fairly good soldiers, in spite of their low experience. Prince Harald almost never leads the division himself, preferring to let his brigadier do his work. Army Commander - Prince Harald Haaskinz (W19, Water ellem5, riding pegasus) Brigadier - (F17, plate armor +2, lance, two handed sword+1, shield+4 riding war horse.) Deputy Army Commander- lord Gerrid Rientha (W15, Water ellem3, riding pegasus) Head Mage- lady Tereis Haaskinz (W15, Air ellem4, flying) Knight- none Fighting troops: 1002 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 1120 Headquarters: Fort Sablestone Summer deployment: banners 1-4 at F. The division is about 50% mounted. Soldiers of sergeant status and above have magical items (about 2%). The army’s troops originate from the principality of Nouvelle Averoigne and from the capital area. Isidore has not yet learned how to lead an army, and prefers not to head her army herself. Her Brigadier or sir Richard will fill her place. This all may change in the face of war. Army Commander - Princes Isidore d’Amberville (W13, riding war horse) Brigadier - Bernard de Noussene (F17, two handed sword+2, dagger+4, plate armor+1, riding war horse) Deputy Army Commander- Sir Richard d’Amberville (F12 long sword+2, plate armor+3, shield+3 on war horse) Head Mage- Formally: Genevieve de Saphora (W20, Alchemist5, on magic broom), actually the army has no head mage as Genevieve is not very friendly with Isidore. Knight- Andre David (Ranger12, Basterd Sword+1/+3 werewolf, longbow+2, silvered short sword studded leather armor +3, on war horse); Marie-Helene (Fighter 15, long sword +1, chinmail+2, ring of protection+1, war horse); Magdalene (Fighter 11, sabre +2, studded leather+2, buckler+1, war horse); Jean Louis (fighter 12, chaimail+3, rapier+2, brooch of shielding, war horse) Fighting troops: 752 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 857 Headquarters: Fortresse d’Ylaourgne Summer deployment: banners 1-3 at F. d’Ylaourgne, banners 4-5 at Vyonnes, banner 6 at Sylaire. The principalities can afford to keep these units for several years with sustainable damages to the economy. These divisions are mostly infantri, only 4% are mounted. Only officers (and Heros) have magical items (less than 1%). Most of the troops come from the capital, the principalities of Fenswick and Bramyra and from the dominions and provinces of central Glantri. Dolores Hilsbury (W20) will not fight, but will stay to defend the capital (as she is the Supreme Judge). Urmahid Krinagar (W15, pegasus) will remain in the capital too, as the chancellor needs to administrate all of the emergency proceedings of wartime. However if need be, he will be happy to replace the second army commander (W11). Army Commander – A noble, family member or fighter (W13, W11, F15, F15 or F14 on war horse) Brigadier – These units do not have Brigadiers as the commanders are always active if the unit is active. Deputy Army Commander- F10 (longsword+1, full plate, sheild+1 war horse) Head Mage- W 10 (wand of lightning bolts, on war horse) Knight- known adventurers join the reserves as knights, there are about 10 of these for each army of all classes and levels 4-11. Fighting troops: 1000 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 1100 Headquarters: Fort Monteleone, Camp Bramyra, Fort Nordling, Glantri City (the citadel), Fort Tchernovodsk. War deployment: gather at respective headquerters and than ordered to wherever needed. Infantry regiment 1-2 Banners 1-2 100 medium infantries (F2) long swords, chain armor, 4 sergeants (F4); 1 captain (F5) Banner 3-4 100 light infantries (F1) long swords, studded leather armor; 4 sergeants (F3); 1 captain (F4) Banner 5 20 light cavalry (F2) long swords, chain shirt; 1 captain (F4) on light war horses Regular Reserves VI-X (poor) In time of war the Warden of the Marches can order the formation of 5 units of this size. Keeping these units active takes a heavy strain on the economy and financial ruin is certain if these men are off the workforce for more than a few months. These divisions are all infantry. Only high ranking officers (and Heroes) have magical items (much less than 1%). These troops represent able bodied men and women from all around the principalities. They are untrained. Army Commander – A vetaren fighter or battle mage (W9, W9, F9, F8 or F7 on war horse) Brigadier – These units do not have Brigadiers as the commanders are always active if the unit is active. Deputy Army Commander- F6 (two handed sword, half plate, war horse) Head Mage- W 10 (wand of lightning bolts, on war horse) Knight- some begginer adventurers join the reserves as knights, there are about 5 of them for each army of all classes and levels 3-6. Fighting troops: 925 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 1000 Headquarters: Braastar, Erendyl, Koopstar, Leenz, Vyonnes War deployment: gather at respective headquerters (town halls) and than ordered to wherever needed. Infantry regiment 1-2 Banner 1 100 medium infantries (F1) long swords, chain shirt, 4 sergeants (F2); 1 captain (F3) Banner 2 100 light infantries (F1) spears, padded armor; 4 sergeants (F2); 1 captain (F3) Banner 3 100 medium infantries (F1) long swords, leather armor, 4 sergeants (F2); 1 captain (F3) Banner 4 120 light infantries (F1) short swods, no armor; 4 sergeants (F2); 1 captain (F3) Special Reserve Unit- Kol’s Humanoid Army This is not really a reserve unit. Kol’s forces are on active duty around the Great Crater at all times. Only at times of War does the council allow for Kol’s forces to enter “Glantri proper” in large numbers. Kol’s army is one of the best trained armies in Glantri. The breakdown and strategies of his units do not correspond to the Glantiran way of fighting but rather to both the Thyatian and Orcish ways. The division is not mounted. Only Kol and his highest officer’s carry magical weapons. 100% of the personnel are humanoids from the great crater. Army Commander – Prince Kol (Kobold F18/W5, ) Brigadier - none Deputy Army Commander- Subchief Frool (Kobold F9) Head “Mage”- great shaman Juntak (Kobold F9/Druid6) Knight- Fighting troops: 3040 Total (including officers, aids and logistics banner): 3300 Headquarters: Kol’s tower Summer deployment: Winter deployment banners: War deployment: advance toward capital, than break to main fighting front. 1st regiment: “Killer Claws of Kol” Company 1: 100 kobolds (F2) with slings and steel claw weapon, studded leather armor; 5 sergeants (F6); 1 leutenent (F10) Company 2: 50 orcs (F2) heavy crossbows and short swords, chain armor; 2 sergeants (F6); 1 leutenent (F10) Company 3: 20 gnolls light cavalries (F2) with lances, long swords, leather armor, riding war horses; 1 sergeant (F6); 1 leutenent (F10) This regiment is directly commanded by king/prince Kol himself. Infantry regiments 2-13: “Citizen-Soldiers of Kol” Companies 1-2: 85 kobolds (F1) medium infantries (F1) long swords, daggers, shields, chain mail; 3 sergeants (F3); 1 captain (F4) Banner 5: 120 light infantries (F1) spears, short swords, leather armor; 4 sergeants (F3); 1 captain (F4) Banner 6: 120 crossbowmen (F2) light crossbows, short swords, chain mail; 4 sergeants (F4); 1 captain (F5) There are many other armed forces in the Great Crater and around it, but these are not under Kol’s command. Some of them are even enemies of the Kobold cause. Special Reserve Unit- Great School Students and Faculty In times of war the Great School of magic in Glantri city is sopposed to continue it’s normal function with a few limitations, the most obvious of them is the absence of the great master and a few faculty. However, if the princepalities are invaded, it is the formal duty of the soon-to-be wizards to defend the city together with the city constabulary and GAG forces in the city. The students and faculty do practice for battle twice in each semester but as for military standards they are untrained and disorgenized. However, 85% of the forces hold magical items (daggers, wands, staffs, rings and the like). The school building itself is endowed with many magical powers and holds several nasty traps for unwanted invaders. Even it’s mundaner staff knows how to find (and hurl) alchemical concuctions that are easely found lying around. Unit Commander – Old master Jeranor (W14, evocer, battle-mage instructor) Deputy Unit Commander-Inguin di Corenveni (W17, enchantress) Fighting troops: 240 Total (including servants, non wiard faculty and the like): 550 Headquarters: Great Master’s lower tower, GsoM, glantri city War deployment: Official role is to defend the entire inner city (within the walls), de Facto region of defence includes GSoM, parlement and some of the noble querter. “Heroes”: Roghene Zelepieti (W19, abjurer) is the most powerful wizard that will stay at the GSoM in time of war. In the worst case scenario Roghene will stand ground at the towers of GSoM and serve as a one woman last line of defence. Even if the city will be blown to smitherins, she will be left standing. Class 1- All children under 10 and beginner students 35 (W1) 25 (W2) 25 (W3) 3(W4) 1(W5) The children and beginers are led by Tasirol Lightfellow (W13, transmuter) but the are also accompanied by many other mundaners and some of the faculty including- Wilhelm Bhes (W15, diviner), LaVerone Chonere (W15 illusionist) and Tobol Vlarostk (W10, necromancer, alchemist2)- the laboratory Administrator. Class 2- Intermediate students 20(W4) 15 (W5) 15 (W6) Led by Bertok Garn (W11, necromancer) the master of necromancy. Class 3- Advanced students 15(W7) 15 (W8) Led bt Maximilian Hiltier (W18, transmuter) the head of the planar circle. Class 4- Seniors, graduates and the mid-level faculty 20(W9) 5(W10) led by Derghov Loeten (W9, evoker) master of evocation. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I have done a Wyrmsteeth Gaz with John Calvin, although it is not Almanac compatible, and it has some leaks and inconsistencies that we really should fix. I hope to do so in the future. Personally I like the way dragons were presented by Bruce Heard, while I've never been a fan of "dragon councils" nor of the standard paths to Immortality for dragons like they are presented in WotI. I hope to give a personal (and hopefully interesting) take on dragons and their influence on Mystara; if you want to take a look at our past work, the Wyrmsteeth Gaz is online at Shawn's, Atlas section. (snip resume) Since H=E5vard just explained (spoiled) the plot, I won't go into that (besides, the books aren't all that interesting anyway IMHO...) I know I discussed this before with people from this list, though it might not have been on the list itself... Not even sure who it was, but I think it was Andrew Theisen. Anyway, someone made this convincing argument of when the plot takes place that I noted down. Through a lot of references it is definitely clear that this is around AC 500 since the Flaems are in control of what will later become Glantri (I think it is called only "The Highlands" or some such in the novels, and certainly never Glantri), so it was after the Flaems arrived but before the civil war. Yet since the Elfwar (between Darokin and Alfheim) is never mentioned, it seems clear that it was before it began in AC 501. Somewhere in the novel there is a reference to how long ago it was when the Flaems arrived, and you can fit everything in after that. The prologue of the first book when Thelvyn is born is set around AC 475. His actual adventures do not begin until he is fifteen, so most of the first novel is set in AC 490. There is then a five year 'gap' between the first and second novel, so that the second and third novels take place around AC 495. At least that was what we worked out the last time we discussed it. Just in case you like to put it into a context that fits, in which case those are the numbers I'd go with. - The Stalker ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 17:59:19 -0700 From: David Keyser Subject: Re: Renardy Dragon Magazine #247 I really wish Bruce Heard had gotten the Rakastas and Tortles into Dragon Magazine.
