Then a high level fighter can do significant damage with his multiple strikes. Without Weapon mastery, a 12th leven fighter with a +1 sword and 16 ST can do the maximum of 22 (2* (8+1+2)) hits with two regular attacks, but 27 (8+1+2+16) hits with one smash attack. The 5 hp difference is significant, for example when you are fighting against medium-level enemy fighters with comparatively high AC, chain mail for example. (Of course, Haste spell and its +2 to Hit bonus is a favourite of the PCs.) > I doubt that 8 blows landed in a fist fight between average people > would kill anyone. Actually single blows in bar brawls etc. can kill, and do. Ask any paramedic: Of course the D&D system wasn't designed to simulate such situations (like when your nose is punched to your brain), but I'd give a real-HP damage minimun in fist fight - if one isn't pulling the punches. > > >Protection rings: Magic is not cumulative with other > > rings (Protection > > +1 > > >and Protection +5 is *not* +6; it is +5). > > Where does this come from? The non-cumulative rule comes from 2nd Edition AD&D, where some differences in the combat system make the rule sensible. We've been playing both games side to side for 12 years, and we agreed that in D&D the protection bonuses can be cumulative. I'm sorry I can't remember the exact argument, but it seemed that in AD&D lower and minus armour classes are a bit easier to achiveve than in D&D, to some restrictions are in order.
