There are obvious sources of conflict: isolationism vs. trade orientation, relatives who possibly live in Darokin, suspicion against Darokin's other allies (Alfheim & Glantri!) etc. etc. Although the Rockhome gazetteer gives details on the clan leaders, I wished to add some dramatic touch to the clan representatives... Thus the old Torkrest veteran, who has lost his left arm in a muddled mischief raid on the Alfheimers, and later replaced it with a golem "cyberarm". Another way of handling this is like in TORG where you have the cyberpsychosis. Usually things will be fine, but if you are in a really stressful situation, there is the danger of you turning into that psycho killer machine..... As a history student, I just want to point out that from the "rules of history", anything goes. As Trade becomes more popular, countries with connection to the Sea will have an advantage, so my bet will be on Thyatis or Minrothad, although Karameikos will also be in line. If political stabilization is possible in the Northern Reaches, that country will probably also become more important, although probably won't have a dominant role. If political stability fails, those countries will still prosper as a harbours of piracy. Magic will always have an edge in Mystara, so I doubt that Glantri will fall behind too much, even if trade that way is unneccesarily complicated. Ofcourse, that can be solved with magic again... Interesting ideas for a campaign for sure! :) Håvard ______________________________________________________ Sjekk snørapporter... fra 500 ski-destinasjoner i Europa på http://no.snow.yahoo.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 23:43:33 +1100 From: Alfred O'Meagher Subject: Re: Ierendi and Freeport Sourcebook? > My and probably other people's reason for placing it > on Ierendi though, is that we don't really approve > much of the Ierendi Gaz... I agree! I was so disappointed when I got the Gazetteer from a local games shop last year. All neat in a plastic bag and everything, and I could only buy one or the other of Ierendi or Emirates of Ylaruam. I bought the wrong one, definitely. The ship counters and the maps were all right, but I felt pretty cheated. I also really despised the artificial dungeon stuff. Really inappropriate in such a swashbuckling world with great adventures like Drums on Fire Mountain and Isle of Dread, and then the other side of the Sea of Dread there is this really silly island chain. The early history of Ierendi sounded good though. It was the dungeon tourism thing I didn't like. Once people get that sort of idea about the world they won't take it seriously. I also didn't see why they published it with that sort of stuff in it in the first place when there were so many other great things they could have done - Quagmire is set near-ish to Ierendi, certainly that side of the Sea of Dread. And the Ierendians could have been made true pirates as a foil for Minrothad and an alternative for people who didn't like the Dawn of the Emperors continuity to set adventures in. All in all a really disappointing product. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 23:49:32 +1100 From: Alfred O'Meagher Subject: Re: D&D Mystara Gazetteers a link to a local (to me) campaign set in 1100 AC is www.geocities.com/knightsbelow. This kind of spoiled it for us a bit as a couple naysayers in the group put the hex on the rest of us by sniggering at the old school (but not cool old school) dungeon hacking. We skipped the B series after that and played the Karameikos audio CD adventures instead, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Really enjoyed. Yes, that is true. The individual modules are usually more complete, though some of them are entirely included in B1-9 (Rahasia, IIRC). The most relevant missing items are the Castellan's Keep from B2, and Cynidicea from B4, IIRC. > Does anyone have any comments on this module (good or bad) and ideas on how > to integrate it into the GAZ 1 info? If you can't get at least the best original adventures (B4, B7, and perhaps Journey to the Rock or Veiled Society), then you should definitely get it instead. However, B4 is set in Ylaruam, so you might want to have a look at the gaz for the Emirates before playing it, and some of the more generic adventures don't fit especially well with Karameikos (I'm thinking of Journey to the Rock, which would be better off in Darokin or even the Orc's Head). Of the original modules, Keep on the Borderland, Silver Princess, and Veiled Society are more or less clearly set in Karameikos. The others are either set somewhere else (B4 The Lost City, and B7 Rahasia), or their setting is not apparent (and generally not Karameikos). Apart from Journey to the Rock, they are not up to those I've mentioned above. -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 09:38:26 -0500 From: SteelAngel Subject: Re: AD&D B1-9 In Search of Adventure On Fri, 8 Mar 2002, Giorgio wrote: > I am thinking of acquiring this module as a starting point for my Mystara > campaign, while my PCs are in the low experience levels and before > unleashing them on the rest of the Old World. ( AKA as a way to buy some > time as I do more research.) In the case of B1-9, it is cheaper to buy the modules individually, considering that the book can fetch prices of up to $200 US. I've owned and used the book for many years (the duct taped spine, and partially torn cover attest to that!) As for the content, it does an appreciable job of bringing 9 rather disparate modules into a campaign setting based in Mystara (whereas the original modules weren't based anywhere specific). I think in that light, the book works. Unfortunately, they do cut out a lot of stuff to make the campaign run smoother, the princess rescuing mission from 'Castle Caldwell and Beyond' (B9?) and levels 6-10 and the underground city from 'The Lost City' (B4) (ironically enough ;) are two examples of about 5 that I can pick out off the top of my head. If you want the whole module experience, go for the ones individually. If you want a premade campaign that requires little work for you, the DM, then try to find a copy of B1-9, but you can't have mine :) Ethan - possibly one of the only people who loved B1-9 -- Kinard 210 Linux Guru Webmaster www.steelangel.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 15:51:49 +0100 From: Giampaolo Agosta Subject: Re: AD&D B1-9 In Search of Adventure Alfred O'Meagher wrote: > The Creep on the Borderline > > :) > > The main problem we faced with these modules was their implausibility at > times - hordes of monsters with no explanation for the how or why of where > they were, why they hadn't swarmed out already and so on. This kind of Well, the Caves of Chaos (if that was the name) were much that kind of monster horde. However, not all of the B series went on that direction. If you can get B10 (I know, it's hard to find) or B6, they're pretty different from B1 or B2. B4 was midway, as the upper levels were well developed and reasonable, while the lower levels were just impossible, with a Vampire, a Blue Dragon, and the main enemy (a Cthulhu-oid monster) nesting within a few meters from one another. The underground city, OTOH, was really full of good ideas, although not developed beyond a single paragraph each. > The D&D website has a load of free maps in the map of the week downloads > section and similarly has a load of AD&D downloads - whole box sets and > stuff, so maybe get some free stuff instead and personalise it with a > minimum of effort or changes. I love the older modules like that because I can fit them into pretty much any campaign that I am running without too much trouble. The background that I gave it was that the horde was being gathered by the temple priests under the guidance of the Master of Hule. The are to launch an attack against the keep to draw attention away from the upcoming attack from Hule against Darokin. Of course this is just another feint in a multi layered plot involving several power factions attempting to bring back an ancient Evil (Tharizdun). Currently the group has moved from the keep down to Luln to investigate rumors of an archaeological expedition gone bad...and run straight into the Temple of Elemental Evil. There they will find that there are dozens of prisoners, among them nobles from Alfheim who have been replaced with doubles in order to destabilize Alfheim for the coming Shadow Elf invasion, captive villagers who have told our dwarf fighter that her family was NOT killed in the raid on her village that sent her on her quest for vengance, and last but not least, Stefan Karameikos himself hidden under an illusion of an entombed vampire!!! All to climax with Bargle the Infamous saving the day as he prevents the gating Shadow Elves (who use a new kind of magic known as "psionics") and their self proclaimed "Hand of Thari" (Thari being the female aspect of Tharizdun) from killing the party and becoming the sole faction with a person who can become Thari's avatar (the other person who could become avatar being the party's "Elven Noblewoman gone slumming with the dwarves and halflings"). I also use the cds from the Red Steel boxed set to set the mood during the game. One other very good module to find is the Hail the Heros, cd module adventures, it's very good, and made a reference to a character from the Diamond Saga, Solvieg Whitegold, in which you try to find the Shield of Halav. You should try that one too. Alfred O'Meagher wrote: The Creep on the Borderline :) The main problem we faced with these modules was their implausibility at times - hordes of monsters with no explanation for the how or why of where they were, why they hadn't swarmed out already and so on. Even the crazy CD stuff was great fun, so different from a normal game. :) --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo! Of course, that can be solved with magic again... Interesting ideas for a campaign for sure! :) Håvard Very interesting Indeed, I could see the Vestland, and possibly Ostland being stablized, and becoming a module of Denmark during the age of Exploration, Trade becomes more populars, and i see Darokin Trading as far as Slagovich, and with the aid of the ships of Ierendei, i can see them Trading throughout the Sea of Dread all the way all the way to the milenean city states along the coast of Davania. Thyatis may be powerful with Minrothad's merchant navy as a part of their mercant fleet, but i see them having to trade with Ierendei less and less as Ierendei buys more trade goods from it's fellow WDL nations. Karameikos will rise as a trading power, trading as far as Tyjaret on the Serpent Neck and NACE, i see Darokin gaining sea trade power through due to the fact that they are possibly the world' largest grain producer. Thyatis years of internal wars and possibly one or two wars with NACE and possibly Ylaraum, would possibly force the empire to go into debt. Emperor Thincol ! foresaw that in A.C. 1010 that if he made his move to take as much property from the Island of Dawn, that he knew this would beggar his nationt also enrich them in the long run. With the large number of political purges and assassinations, that could have led to civil wars like in Hattias, and their war with the Twaelar, i believe that Thyatis would become sorely in debt from all its wars. While NACE being Isolationists for a majority of the century, they would be too busy fighting Minaean pirates, and controling the Jen of Esterhold. while expanding there undersea holdings. WDL would most possibly expand all the way to the coastal City states such as Slagovich, Zvornik, and Hojah. with the exception of the Yavldom divinarchy. They would later be known as the Eastern Defense League as they begin to trade representatives with the Signatory council of the Savage Coast, and create a mutual defense treaty against Hule. Glantri would become more chaotic thanks to Synn, and Wenda ! r would be very isolated. These are just my theory, looking at each nations trend in terms of where they might be going. any input from you, guys. --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo!
