The first idea was that historicaly, Excalibur, would have been a Roman short sword, and King Arthur would have been a tribal chieftan. Although not dealing with low magic, I wanted to put this same position in my player's eyes of "Wow, a dagger that gives light, what an awsome weapon!" The second idea, was I wanted to make the wizard seem more powerful in other peoples eyes. The trick to this is not to make them more powerful, but put less emphasis on making magic everywhere. I learned this from my Amish cousins that would sneak in to my house to watch half an hour of TV a weekend, and what else would they watch? Non other than the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. I learned the dagger trick when a paladin character of mine found a simple non-magical dagger that had continual light cast on it. My paladin's response to this highly unlikable weapon (compared to the Holy Avenger already in my paladin's use), was to hold it above my character's head and name the weapon "Flicka" in a very joyful manner. As my paladin's legendary travels went on, he always kept that little dagger, and it saved my paladin's butt at some very critical battles in his career. In all, when my paladin faded into history, that little dagger named Flicka became enshrined and kept as a high religious relic for my paladin's church, my sword was kept locked away in some dark corner of the church's vaults, waiting for some great hero to be presented with it; most likely in some ceremony lighted by a small simple dagger, that continual light cast on it. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2003 20:21:43 -0300 From: JJJ Subject: Re: High or Low magic ? Take off Alphatia and Mystara gets back to Low-Magic, with Glantri being an "accent" on magic. My oldest curently running campaign (which hopefully i shall end this sunday!) is somewaht unfair to PCs, now that you have made a point on magic. They are all 36th level but for the Thief, however i never had any Magic-User player in this campagin, so the most powerful spellcaster was the elf with his 5th level spells. I had awesome battles in which the heroes only hope was their sacred Club+4, the only item of this magnetude to ever fall on their hands. Only now, at the end, do they have got ONE Sword+5, which is intelligent, etc. made exclusively to help win the final confrotation with a Lawful Neutral immortal, their main villain. I remember that when someone received a spear+3 all PCs were 18-20th level... However, they flew through space, visited one of the moons, another nearby ice planet, and confronted several outer planes. Is this Low or High magic? Maybe the question is: do YOUR PCs have acess to High Magic? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2003 22:05:25 -0400 From: Geoff Gander Subject: Re: Forgotten Places of Davania Thib wrote: > congrat Geoff > > as always, your contribution is nothing but perfect... (next to the vulture peninsula) It could be, if you wanted it to be. To be honest, I never had an exact place for it, save only that it should be located somewhere in the Aryptian Desert, or its fringes.
