Just what one finds in a book, could very well have been catalogued wrong or purposely misleading. The main purpose of the catalogue is to give DM’s a list to roll or select from for finding a rare tome and trying to figure out just what it could be. Finding a bibliography just may not be interesting, but worth lots of money to the mage that wrote it for his personal library. Or be very interesting, as it lists exactly what is in his library (once the wards and deciphering are done). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 May 2003 10:40:14 -0400 From: Chris Cherrington Subject: Re: Don't Judge a Book by its Cover Expanding the Mage’s ideal library could be a life long task. What exactly is the mage looking for in a book? Sometimes it is just dumb luck, or sometimes he stumbles across the bibliography of Prince Tutelame the White. A powerful wizard known for his flashy teleportation spells. One might think that if you decipher this script, you would have the knowledge base to build the same library he once studied from and learn his magnificent teleportation spells. Of course you may have to substitute some of his books with a copy or subject like matter, it would not be the first time a mad mage substituted (I am thinking frog DNA for genetic holes in dinosaurs here). Sometimes the book one finds is just notes for the bigger picture. What that bigger picture is, well you just have to find the missing pieces to find out. Insert evil DM laugh, as the missing pieces are for a new sleep spell or conjure major fiend (disguised as invisible servant). Be careful with those summonin ! g spells, you never know what terrible creature really comes through (my mage was cursed for summoning an in-law, complete with the wife, kids, and a rolling pin+2, +2 vs. husbands who study in all hours of the night!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 May 2003 11:14:36 +1200 From: Chris Furneaux Subject: Re: Hello again > Hey guys, I'm rejoining this list after being gone for a > while. But the Ispans might be the european spanish, and the espas, the american spanish (criollos), specially because the espas had mixed thenselves with the local natives (oltecs). Ok, the Verdans is a mix of the ispans, tanagoros and oltecs, and still they're equivalent to the Portuguese, not the Brazilians... but if the Ispans are the european spanish, that would explain Belcadiz, right? Or not? 3- Where is the Dominion of Tanaka? It's mencioned at the Savage Baronies' timeline once, but nothing else is said about this dominion, and it's nowhere on the maps! I had an idea for adventures for Porto Maldição, based on the brazilian history. Since it's placed next to many unexplored/unclamed/savage lands, it's probable that some verdan adventures would like to explore this regions. And this remembers me about the brazilian Bandeirantes, explorers that explored the unknow lands west of the portuguese first colonies. The RW Bandeirantes mainly started their "Bandeiras" (exploring missions) from a small village, São Paulo (today the biggest brazilian city), neghbour to many unexplored lands, specially the region of the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest, i think... an tropical forest), where they searched for indian to become slaves, and the montain region of Minas Gerais, where they looked for gold (and other precious metals) mines. So, this fits perfertly with Porto Maldição and Mato Grande. Baideirantes could organize Bandeiras (in Mato Grande as the start point) to explore the Terras Orcs Orientais (Western Orclands) looking for orcs to become slaves and pass through the Pântano Podre (Rot Swamps) to reach and explore the mountains next to Aeryl, looking for gold (and other precious metals) mines. well, nothing is said that the Verdans of Porto Maldição (or any other) make slaves to work in their mines/farms, but nothing is said that they don't to that too (at least in Porto Maldição). They probably might had learnt form the same orcs this "escravista" system (again, nothing is siad that this orcs makes slaves to work in their mines/farms, but nothing is said that they don't... at least i didn't find nothing about it), and now they use this same orcs as slaves. Ok, but even if they do that, Porto Maldição is a very small colony, and they would not have the necessity of many Bandeiras to make many slaves... unless they sell this extra slaves to someone else that don't care to use forced labor. And the first nation that i think when i found this answer was Nimmur. Nimmur is a realm of cruel Manscorpions that can't stay under the sunlight for a long time, or they would die. So, they would need very much someone to work on their farms, for example... And because of it, i had another idea for Porto Maldição, and now for Porto Escorpião too. Both vilaverdan former colonies probably lost part of their profit when Richland were conquered by Zuyevo, because the Texeirans might started to pay attention to other trade routes outside the Yalu Bay (at least until Richland were reconquered, probably), specially because they lost the monopoly of the trade of this region. That might ruin Porto Maldição's tradicional source of money, and this would cause the fall of Porto Maldição's governor. This would cause an civil war, the remaining powerful factions trying to gain the remain of Porto Maldição's power and wealth. This would make the lower classes make Bandeiras thenselves, trying to not lost all the money then save in their whole lives, spending all in this expeditions and praying for the Immortals that this Bandeiras will make they profit. This would generate an very prosperous new trade route (of slaves), just waiting for someone with enough money to invest and take this slaves to where their nedded the most. And this is when Don Jorge de Porto Escorpião, affected too because of the cimarron/texeiran's defeat, realizes the profit he would gain taking the control of Porto Maldição, and even more, that this colony need him to not cease to exist (after this crisis, the majority of te population would migrate to somewhere else, seeking for better conditions of live). So, after an quick and easy battle against some local powers, the people (from the poorest to the richest) of Porto Maldição would welcome him and make him governor of this colony too. Even more, he would probably create a new Barony (yes, very far from the others, indeed), Baronato de Portos, with the Fortaleza de Porto Maldição being it's capital. With his support, the Bandeirantes would prosper and more and more Bandeiras would be made, probably even discovering gold or another precious mineral at the western mountains, and because of that, eventually this new barony would expand it's borders to the south and west. This slave trade, route, gold mines and the monopoly of trade with Nimmur would incourage Barão Jorge I to increase his army and navy, eventually giving hin power to try to compete with Texeiras and Renardy in the commerce routes on the Yalu Bay, and more than that, he might build another fort on the Strait of Yalu, and demand taxes to anyone that wants to enter or leave the Yalu Bay with goods (he might demand an small tax to vilaverdan ships, or none). Sure, this would put Texeiras, Renardy and the LB Trade Company against this barony, but Vivalerde would be more than happy to help Baronato de Portos in this issue (this would be an great oportunity to add new trade routes to their trade empire and to weak some of their great rivals). And this might even result in a new war between this naval powers. Well, that's all =) Please don't forget to send your comments =) Bye _________________________________________________________________ MSN Hotmail, o maior webmail do Brasil. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 May 2003 08:20:59 +0200 From: Giampaolo Agosta Subject: Re: Questions, Porto =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Maldi=E7=E3o?= and Porto Escorpiao Asgor Ironfist wrote: > Hi everyone =) > Well, some of my basic questions persists, so i'll ask then: > 1- Which is the colour of the shadow elves' skin? everywhere i found > anything about then says that the are pale beings, but the cover of Gaz5 > and > Gaz13 shows darkskinned (blue/black) shadow elves... so, which is correct, > which is wrong? Or not? The Ispans and Verdans are supposed to represent the Spanish and Portuguese at various times in their history. In particular, Narvaez represent the Spanish Reconquista, while Saragon is a variant on Moorish Spain. For the rest: Torreon: early centroamerican spanish colonies Vilaverde: Portugal in the expansion phase Texeiras: Brazil Gargona: hard to say, a lighter toned Spain than Narvaez, perhaps Almarron: Mexico during/after the revolution Guadalante: Argentina > 3- Where is the Dominion of Tanaka? It's because many of the original domains have been destroyed, conquered or absorbed into other lands. Tanaka is now part of Texeiras, IIRC. > I had an idea for adventures for Porto Maldição, based on the brazilian > history. Seems interesting, but I need more time for an in-depth reading...
