I use lawful alignment for people who mostly agree with their community or nation. If their community is evil they'll be evil, if their community is good they'll be good, but if someone is good and lives in a evil community I think he cannot be lawful: he have to be chaotic, because he is different from the others among he lives.... bye Francesco ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 2003 11:19:39 +0200 From: Federico Kaftal Subject: Alignements & Mystara After reading some people's opinions, I came up with a first draft of my own 9-matrix: LG Socrates, Halav LN Pontius Pilatus, Etienne Amber LE Al Capone, King Thar NG NN NE CG Robin Hood, Tylion/Terari CN Ulysses, Haldemar CE UnaBomber [a cruel Italian serial killer, still active], Hosadus I have big doubts, however, about Neutral alignements on the axis of Legality: I can't seem to come up with a sense for not being just "Legal" or "Chaotic": in other words, Legality seems to me more of a binary [0/1] system: either you're Legal, or you're illegal (=Chaotic): either Law is important for you or it's not - maybe sometimes you respect law for your own convenience (for not being put to jail, etc.) but basically you ignore it (even though you could still be bothered with MORAL dilemmas): which makes you a Chaotic by definition. I can't seem to find a definition for Neutrality (on the axis of Legality) which accounts for a difference towards Chaos. In other words, a Neutral, as well as a Chaotic, refuses the concept of a Legal authority imposing on him/herself, and pretends to follow his own rules, according to his own judgements or whims. What's, then, the difference between Neutral and Chaotic? Please help... I came up with a theory, nonetheless, which wants that true Neutrals on the axis of Law can only pertain to the following cathegories: 1. non-social animals [or monsters], such as bears or eagles (social ones, like bees, are Legal) 2. hermits who refuse contacts with society and held no firm belief in whatsoever natural or supernatural Law (therefore Druids are LN, because they strictly follow the laws of Nature, of their Gods and of their orders: they are Neutral on the MORAL axis, like every animal) 3. philosophers [or mystics] who sincerely (i.e. not just out of their selfish goals but out of true reasoning) believe that the concept of Law itself as opposed to Chaos is nothing but a human illusion and there's no room in reality for anything else than Dharma, meaning that there's no Law-Chaos axis to move along, but a single point to stay! I'll appreciate, as usual, your opinions. Bits of DA5 may be resurrected by Zeitgeist for their Blackmoor line - we can but hope. Hammer of Ulric ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 01:12:45 -0300 From: JJJ Subject: Re: Alignements & Mystara In this Neutral problem regar we can once again take the example of Robin Hood. I remember an antique OD&D acessorie by Gary Gygax which stated him as NG, because he worked for the good of all, but not for a free-for-all sytle of good. In fact he battled so that King Richard III could be king, as the people liked him, and in his laws they trusted. I believe the Neutral aligment in any axis only states that the other Axis is to be enfasized above everything. So NG believe in Good of all (the subejective one or whatever) above everything, an CN believes in randomicity and free will above everything, an LN in order and harmony above, etc... The N would be the most rare aligment and difficult to explain... Try outs anyone? ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 24 May 2003 to 25 May 2003 (#2003-136) ****************************************************************
