My thinking on why (in Mystaran recorded history) that movements of attacking forces or armies purely by magic might be because of several reasons. Perhaps a mage has visited the palace of his enemy many times, probably as an emissary. He plans on casting Teleport to get into the palace, cast random Fireball and Delayed Blast Fireball and Cloudkill spells, and Teleport back out. Now, when he Teleports there, he ends up teleporting too low, and is thus killed, and otherwise never seen again. Another problem may be Immortal intervention. Perhaps a high-level mage wants to move a small attacking force behind enemy lines to wreak havoc on a supply facility, turning the tide of a war. He may cast Gate into another plane, and then cast Gate again back into his home plane, having his whole army move through. This might not be able to happen because an enemy Immortal, or unrelated Immortal with a sense of fair play might intervene and kill the mage and his small attacking force, just for trying to be 'unfair'. Another issue might be that the only reason such a tactic hasn't been recorded as being used because such tactics failed because of (as mentioned above) Immortal influence, or that they have worked so well that the targeted force is so completely obliterated, it would be as if they completely disappeared. As with any other cultures, history is generally written by the victors, so in Mystaran history, they may actually use such tactics sparingly, making sure to keep them as secret as possible. ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 12 Jul 2003 to 16 Jul 2003 (#2003-177) ****************************************************************
