It seems a typical strategy for viruses: take two addresses from the infected computer's addressbook, and send an infected mail to the first setting all settable sender fields to the second. A look at the full header of the bounced message or of the infected mail will probably show a "received from" field not matching the sender field. However, all of this is to say that the mails we received are quite unlikely to actually come from the apparent senders. > I'm pretty sure the mails I've got this morning are of the > W32.Sobig.F@mm variety. Same here (got a dozen of them), at least the ``modus operandi'' is the that of Sobig. Anyway, .pif files are, AFAIK, Windows macros, so only Windows boxes are affected, and then only if the user activates the file manually. I suppose the other obvious contender to write a 'Mystaros' supplement that's got the right flavour would be Aaron Allston. Looking at his site, http://www.aaronallston.com/, there's an email address at which he can be contacted. I'd be delighted to see either Bruce or Aaron write the 'Hackwurld' supplement, but as you've contacted Bruce already shall we see what he has to say before trying to email Aaron to see if he's interested? I was just reading the hundred mails i missed during my lack of internet access; I stumbled upon a statement about a source putting forward Vanya as a Jennite warrior princess. I see a very convenient way to have this true too. Let's assume that under a mortal identity of a jennite warrior, Vanya achieved once again immortality... this could open also various possibilities regarding old ones, but i let this discussion for later. thatr was just my two cents... thibault ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 11:16:02 +0200 From: Daniel Mayer Subject: Re: danger for any MML member. If they're really editing out 88% of the material, there's potential for serious changes. That may not be bad, but it may not be the labor of love it might have been. It's kind of creepy, since I -know- I didn't send those mails. It could be spammers spoofing your address, or perhaps that virus is going around attaching names in people's address books to it's own spam mails.
