Might I suggest, Aaron, that you create a narrator persona for the text, as it reads very much like a lecture or similar sort of narrative now? Perhaps it is a guest lecture by a renowned historian from a Darokinian or Thyatian university... As far as alternate timelines go, Colin, you might wish to peruse the timeline I wrote a while back for Alphatia during the AC 1009-1015 period. It's only a start, I admit, but I based it on the premise that Alphatia did not sink during WotI, but instead dissolved into chaos with the elimination of a large part of the central government (I assumed that the Doomsday Device worked as planned, and only Sundsvall was vaporised). It might give you some ideas, at any rate. You can find it on my website, or in the Vaults. The Hinterlands - Faced with the rising chaos following the Great War, the Thyatian authorities in the Hinterlands did their best to maintain order in northern Davania. Having opened diplomatic relations with the neighbouring kingdom of Emerond, Leilah ben-Nadir, governor of the Hinterlands, was able to secure a large part of her frontier. Nevertheless, the Thratian tribes had become unified under the enigmatic warrior queen known as Siobhan, daughter of Maeve, and the remaining free tribes mounted a final campaign to drive the Thyatians into the sea. The Emerondians refused to involve themselves in the conflict, and closed their borders to both sides. Unable to count on support from Thyatris proper, Leilah took matters into her own hands, and led a long, bloody campaign to drive the Thratians out of Thyatian lands. Although Siobhan was never captured, her army splintered as the fractious nature of the Thratians came to the fore once more. It was then that Leilah realised that she and her people could not count on their cousins to the north to aid them; they would be responsible for their own fate. Thus started a new royal line, the House of Nadir, with Leilah as the first Queen of Thyatia Meridiona. Subsequent rulers divided the territory into provinces, cleared more land, and pushed the borders southwards and eastwards to some extent, but never did they turn their eyes northwards - news from their ancestral lands was nothing but tales of woe. "The north is lost to us," Leilah once said, and that line is now repeated by every new ruler of Thyatia Meridiona - there is no going home. Through the years, the Thratians remained a menace, but they could be held at bay, and the Thyatians forged strong ties with the city-states of Kastelios and Ilioloosti, both centres of order in a chaotic and dangerous land. Today, this surviving realm of Thyatis eyes warily the rise of the Serpent Confederation, and competes with it for influence over the lucrative lands of the Adakkian Sound (which has seen many wars in recent years), and it watches the growing might of Mivosia, the military power of the Meghala Kimata Plain. Mivosia - Once a centre of art and learning in the Milenian Empire, Mivosia survived the ensuing millennium of darkness by forging itself into a military power. Ruled by a triumvirate for many years until shortly after the Great War, a king now rules, his ancestor having eliminated his companions centuries ago to start a royal line of his own. Several wars were fought with the Knights of Vanya (who sought to expand their holdings beyond Vanya's Rest, on Davania's eastern coast), but still Mivosia dominates the easten Meghala Kimata Plain. At the same time, Mivosia's legions have marched westwards overrunning lesser city-states and adding them to its own growing empire. The current ruler, Lotharian II, has boldly announced the impending doom of Ilioloosti, and the subsequent rise of the Second Milenian Empire. The Serpent Confederation - [Enough had been said about it for now, I would only add that Kastelios and Ilioloosti, while technically members of it, also have close ties with the former Hinterlands]. The Adakkian Sound - Ever since Jean-Francois Papineau, the legendary Renardois explorer, opened a trade route to their hitherto unknown region in AC 1020, the Sound has become syonymous with greed, pride, and blood. The establishment of the Renardois colony of Cap Saimpt-Renard in AC 1021 spurred neighbouring realms of what was once known as the Savage Coast to venture to this remote region themselves, and carve out their own colonies. Unfortunately, it was not just the petty baronies of the west who went there. Tales of great veins of gold, silver, and precious gems, ripe for the taking, and of strong natives who made excellent slaves, stirred the imaginations of almost every would-be emperor in the Known World. The years AC 1062-1131 were known as the Years of Fire for this reason, as madmen sought to carve out their own dominions with private armies, and the lands surrounding the Sound knew little but war. Ultimately, Renardie, Vilaverde, and Bellayne were the strongest powers in the region, and many years of uneasy peace followed. But the intrepid explorers from those colonies uncovered other things in the Sound, things left behind by nations and empires that predated them by thousands of years. Some artifacts recovered from those mysterious ruins drove men mad, while others proved to be great weapons of destruction - and so another period of bloodletting began, the time we know as the Adakkian Wars (AC 1437-1452). Once again, armies surged across the land, slaughtering their foes like animals where they could, and committing unspeakable acts using the various items recovered from the ruins. I need not tell you how whole towns vanished in terrifying flames in a single day, but it happened. Finally, the Knights of Vanya entered the fray, and secured some of the artifacts for its own purposes before leaving again. Some say Vanya Herself inspired them to get involved, others say they were hired to do so - we shall perhaps never know the true reason. Regardless, the Knights' involvement tipped the scales, and now Renardie and Vilaverde are the remaining powers there, while Bellaynish armies guard their remaining holding of Port Elsterbury. But the lands there are darker somehow, as though, by using those ancient artifacts, the opposing armies released some forgotten evil. Strange monsters lurk in the dark jungles, and outlying towns and villages have been found abandoned. Both of the major powers are now too evenly matched to start another war, and their rulers watch the countryside with a growing sense of fear, but of what, they do not know. Amalur Lowlands - This region has always been forsaken by civlised people, and has been left to the lizard men who dwell therein. Even during the times of strife in the Adakkian Sound, the lowlands were avoided, for many of the tribes living there have been hostile to outsiders for as long as anyone can remember, and that place was always thought to have nothing of value. In the years following the Adakkian Wars, however, the Amalur Lowlands have acquired a more fearsome aspect. Traders sailing by the region report seeing strange lights in the sky at night, and brave adventurers who have ventured there, and returned, tell improbable tales of great cities being excavated and rebuilt. Some rulers of the blood-drenched lands of the Adakkian Sound heed these tales, and look to the lowlands with nervous eyes, and entrench themselves deeper within their castles. Don't worry about it, Thib - as I understand things, this is all an exercise in speculation - how *might* things turn out if events play out a certain way at the time of WotI and the Second Great War. I think other interpretations of the future of Mystara are equally valid, just as the Mystaran Almanac does not claim to be the official timeline following the WotI period. I knew relatives and friends who had lived in Summer Wind Apts.. However, the name was to something else right now that I can't remember. Now there's an idea -- To have an M-CON in Orlando. Unfortunately I don't think there are too many of us in Orlando! As for Italians, I've always found it interesting that there are so many that are into Mystara. Which brings up a question I was always curious about this since joining this list-- Is Mystara on a whole just more popular in Italy than here?
