Are they any good? Kit Navarro ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2003 17:39:13 +0200 From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Havard=20Faanes?= Subject: Re: Player's & DM's Survival Kit No, they are crap. I seriously dont know what TSR were thinking when they were released, but AD&D products did range from pretty good to complete waste of paper in those days. I havent looked at the kits for a while, so I cant exactly remember what they did contain. The DM's Kit did contain some curious cards, but they werent very useful. The players guide did contain some brief info about each country IIRC and lists of names from different countries. But really, unless you can get them very cheaply and you are a big mystara fan I wouldnt waste any money on them. Havard --- "Francisco V. The DM kit contains a booklet with info about the following handouts compleate with descriptions: sample floorplans with keys: Castle temple Monster lair wizards tower tavern/Inn Village sevral blank "scrolls" for "town postings" blank map sheets (2 square, 2 hex) Dwarvish alphabet key Elvish alphabet key Magical alphabet key (note: all are phonecit) Adventure synopsis sheet (adventure record keeping sheet Adventure record: Events & exploits Adventure statistics: treasure & experience sheet Adventure statistics:Monster sheet (monster stats sheet basicly) Adventure statistics: Player characters (PC info sheet for 12 members) Minor NPC sheet Calendar sheet Major NPC sheet Normal PC sheets (warrior, Priest, Wizard, Thief) Creating a monstrous compendium entry (custom monster creation sheet, same as in the back of the Monstroues manual book) Monster encounter charts (D100 and 2-20 (1d8-1d12)) The DM kit also comes with a deck of cards to be used as a prop for a new magical item, "The Deck of the Spheres". Its alot like the "deck of many things". The descriptions of the languages (elvish, dwarvish and the magical srcipts) are some what incompleate and hard to use (thats why i use tolkiens scripts). There is also a small booklet thats a journal for the DM to keep track of the PC groups "exploits", for keeping track of enemys, places explored and such. Its the type of thing that can be writen down in a notebook. The Players kit contains more handouts: simple map of karameiokos (as an adventuerer would make one) simple map od Darokin (as above) simple map of Glantri (as above) a "scroll" leting people know that the barony of Halag is open to setelement a "scroll" from the highforge asking for guards for the yearly "gnome caravan" from highforge. wanted poster of "Bargle the Infamous" standard "Now hiring" poster for henchmen. Blank "diploma" from the "Karameikan school of magecraft" in ccalligraphy blank final report card from "Great school of magic (glantri)". blank lisence (or something...hehe) declaring a PC membership in the order of the griffon in calligraphy. a blank page declaring the PC's membership in the "kingdom of thieves" thievs guild. "Cleric in good standing" paper for the church of traladara. "cleric of good standing" paper for the church of karameikos. a "letter of marque" paper for the PC group. A "letter of credit" paper from darokin for the PC group. papers for specialist wizards (same as in the PH/DMG except these papers list the spells for eack specialist mage as per school) 2 pages with PC portrates on them for the major base classes. Pages to help flesh out a PC family. There is also a small booklet that is ment to be used as a PC group journal keeping track of foes, allies, places explored and such. The info can be writen in a notebook. The main book in the kit describes how to use the handouts, the "adventurers log and a set of cards caled "fame and fortune" that add a mix of difrent things into the game that affect the PC and sometimes the PC group. It also contains a "dictionary of names" per country, and a simple system of heraldry that can be used in the game (i prefer the real stuff but the system here is alot simpler to use). Note that all of this is in second edition AD&D. ===== "Happy Hunting!" My web site: http://www.geocities.com/boonedale/ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! The Deck not useful ? :-) The Deck was very useful to... kill permanently at least one Pc, incapacitate another and provide at least 4 or 5 great adventures :-) The Deck is composed of some 20 cards, like tarots.. each card has a particular meaning and is linked to one of the spheres, and their effects are wonderful and terribles... just put the deck on the table and the Pc will not be able to resist :-) They'll have to take a card :-) The Deck is Powerful ! (no no to read the effects of the deck of many things in a manual and toss a dice is NOT the same). In short, I liked a little the DM Survival kit because it had The Deck; besides the module has many other cards too, each with the story of a magic item, usually of Karameikos and nearby lands, which I found quite useful too... and the rest of the module has some nice but not indispensable tip about the work of the Dm (create city and so on...) About the Player's survival kit, I know nothing... But as I said, remember that The Deck is The Deck :-) Bye Francesco ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 18 Sep 2003 to 19 Sep 2003 (#2003-231) ****************************************************************
