Indeed, I used the word "standard" because my knowledge of typographic topics is limited. After a short search on the web (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/profirst/map.htm), I should replace "standard" with "Old Style". It seems that font faces are categorized by ``style era''. These are the main categories, with examples: Old Style (Times Roman), Transitional (Baskerville), Modern (Bodoni), Square Serif (Bookman, Courier), sans serif (Arial), Glyphic (Copperplate Gothic), Script (any handwriting-like typeface with connected letters), Graphic (any Blackletter, Gothic script, or Uncial typeface--basically all decorative styles) To get back to our topic, what I and Chris are trying to say is, more formally, that we would like to see the body text in any Old Style (also Transitional and Modern are probably quite good for the purpose) typeface, while the titles could be set in a less legible face. Note that "Old Style" include subcategories which you could use to keep the text different from Times Roman (which is a more modern Old Style). Two font faces that have already been suggested are Palatino (Venetian Old Style, 15th century) and Garamond (French Old Style, 16th century). I hope this helps, -- Giampaolo Agosta http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2003 11:33:34 +0200 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Ville_V_L=E4hde?= Subject: Re: War-Journal of Bue Geirsteinson - Part XVII > Thanks a lot! Nice to know that somebody was reading...and waiting! My thanks to you also. It was a good read. Descriptions of the characters of the story will follow, two a day, = until done. The write-ups reflect the character stats at the end of the = story. Some of the characters have already been described in previous = works of mine, but are updated here and may see small changes due to = their experiences in this story. All stats are OD&D and use the optional = rules for Personality Traits found in GAZ7: The Northern Reaches (or my = adaptation of those rules). The first two characters, father and son, follow here. Jacob Skytte scythe@wanadoo.dk *** Bue Geirsteinson Lawful 4th level Fighter (Str 16, Int 12, Wis 13, Dex 11, Con 15, Cha = 16, AC 2, hp 28) Personality Traits: Cautious/Rash 14/6, Courageous/Fearful 13/7, = Reverent/Godless 15/5, Honest/Deceitful 12/8, Loyal/Unreliable 14/6 21 years old, Blond hair, Blue eyes "You are wrong, father. I am your son, the son you raised to believe in = the will of Odin." Bue is the ideal Ostland warrior, strong of arm, fair of face, and hardy = of spirit. He is a firm believer in Odin, the Kingsmaker. His beliefs = led him to betray his father, Geirstein Thorgelson, to King Hord = Dark-Eye, revealing his father's plans to usurp the throne. The king, = who enjoys rivalry among his subjects, allowed Bue the chance to restore = his clan's name by defeating the traitors within his clan. During his quest, Bue dueled his brother Lot, who lost an eye during = their battle, and later defeated his father with the aid of Asta = Katlasdottir, a jarl's daughter, whom Bue had begun to fall in love = with. Though he failed to capture his brother, King Hord still named him = jarl of Noslosford after the defeat of Geirstein. In battle Bue wears a scale mail+1 and a shield+2 called "Stjerneskjold" = (Starshield), which used to belong to his father. He wields a war hammer = of excellent quality, though it isn't enchanted (+2 to hit, +1 to = damage). Bue has not yet married, but he has pledged his love to Asta = Katlasdottir, who unfortunately isn't in a position to return it, before = she has restored her tainted honour. He is very close to his sister Lis, = the only remaining relative he is on good terms with; she lives with him = in the clan hall of Leirbotn. Bue's mother, Elsa, is now a thrall to = King Hord. His other sister, Oda, is married to the neighbouring jarl of = Vithesford, and the siblings are not on good terms. His younger brother, = Hjort, has been adopted into the Royal Household by the king, while his = older brother, Lot, is in hiding somewhere. Geirstein Thorgelson* Neutral 14th level Fighter (Str 16, Int 12, Wis 11, Dex 13, Con 9, Cha = 12, AC 1, hp 57) Personality Traits: Cautious/Rash 14/6, Energetic/Lazy 13/7, = Trusting/Suspicious 15/5, Loyal/Unreliable 7/13 49 years old, Grey hair and beard, Grey eyes "I raised you to become a prince, but you have chosen to betray me!" *Geirstein's stats are for his human shape, just before he was = polymorphed to a fox. A veteran of numerous conflicts, Jarl Geirstein Thorgelson of Noslosford = had made quite a name for himself as a mercenary fighting for various = nations. He began exploiting this, demanding fees in advance then = leaving the job unfinished and returning to his great hall. Four years = ago he took a Rockhome dwarf as thrall, and, after learning of his great = skill, made him his personal weapon smith. Geirstein began to gather a = large store of superior weapons for use in usurping the throne of = Ostland. Though he liked king Hord, he liked king Geirstein better. Geirstein's only mistake was to make his family part of his plans. While = most of them approved, his younger son, Bue, who had been sent to the = Royal Household found that he could not betray his king and revealed = Geirstein's plot to Hord. When Bue returned, Geirstein found that the = only thing he could do was fight, hoping to get a chance to kill his = king or at least punish his treacherous son. However, when the chance came, he was foiled by the magic of Asta = Katlasdottir, and was polymorphed into a fox. Geirstein became, in every = way that matters, an ordinary forest animal and ran off. It would = conceivably be possible to find him and reverse the magic, restoring him = to his former self, but unless somebody, with the means and desire to do = so, free him, he will remain a fox for the rest of his life. When in battle Geirstein used to carry a chain mail, a shield+2 called = "Stjerneskjold" (Starshield), which is now in the hands of his son Bue, = and a normal sword of excellent quality (+2 to hit, +1 to damage). Geirstein was married to Elsa the Seal, and had five children by her: = Lot Geirsteinson, Bue Geirsteinson, Oda Elsasdottir, Lis Elsasdottir, = and Hjort Geirsteinson. His family is now scattered and divided. ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 7 Jan 2003 to 8 Jan 2003 (#2003-9) ************************************************************
