Out of Lurker Mode...hey all, long time no key. Been busy in real life. Loged in this account to see if it was still active and saw I had a bunch of messages waiting. This one caught my eye. I don't know if this will renew my posting but you never know. My campaign, when it was running, was mostly based within the confines of Gaz Era Alphatian Empire. As such, magic played a very prominent and highly visual role within the setting. For example, an omnipotent mage is formidable, but not out of the ordinary. One aspect that enjoyed was the use of magic in everyday life. Another were the varying levels of magic throughout Alpher society as well as the Empire's holdings. For non-Alpher settings I emphasize mages when encountered to represent the lessened use of magic. There, a mage of moderate level may be looked upon with awe and admiration by the locals. Incidentally, I usually would make any visiting Alphers not be overwhelmed. This extended to Alpher spellcasters and non-spellcasters alike...though the extent of their reactions varied. Afterall, no Alpher mage is going to be impressed by a "barbarian" mage. Back into lurker mode for the time being. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2003 00:27:04 +0200 From: Francesco Defferrari Subject: Re: High or Low magic ? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alex Benson" > My campaign, when it was running, was mostly based within the confines of Gaz > Era Alphatian Empire. Well so far you and me are the only ones who declare to have a high magic campaign :-) No one else ? It's strange because the low magic mood was of the first mystaran products, but the high magic mood was more of the later products, so I thought that the most of the mystaran Dms and players played a high magic campaign.. Anyway thanks to everyone who replied and will reply to this little poll ! bye Francesco ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 2003 19:29:43 -0500 From: Stone Marshall Subject: Re: High or Low magic ?

I guess MC would tend toward High Magic, but I don't think it's "super-high". I started the campaign using many of the B & X modules, as written, so PCs tended to accumulate a fair amount of magical and monetary wealth. Nowadays, I try to scale this back some, but, being a continuation of the same campaign, it can't be rolled back entirely. Also, the early PCs have advanced to max. level, as dominion rulers in Norwold (using the CM modules), so some high magic has been necessary to craft suitable adversaries to them, and to have situations arise which move these types of characters to action. Most NPCs of level 15+ will have at least some +3 items. +4 and +5 stuff is still uncommon, but it is there. I think all 3 of the L36 PCs have at least 1 +5 item, be it armor or weapon. Rings of prot. are pretty common, since I need enemies to have low AC against these guys. Flying is common, and any civilized (and even some primitive) society will have at least potions of flying, etc. to counter enemy aerial special forces, which otherwise could easily overrun most defenses (i.e. a lone MU w. a wand of fireballs probably won't be able to blast away a whole army - the armies anti-flight guy would go up to challenge him). Nearly all high levels will have a perm. fly spell. Only Alphatia (and now NW), plus the HKs have air navies. Oh yeah, the Master of Hule also had some airships. Glantri and Alphatia are lit by magic and magical items can be purchased or traded. Not so elsewhere. Peasants and commoners are pretty ignorant about magic in most places. The spells in the RC are pretty much the known spells of the world, with some of those (woodform, etc.) limited to Alphatia. Some regions might have additional spells, unknown to other areas. I'm much more careful now to introduce perm. items which PCs will have for a long time. I tend to throw in more temp. items now. Girdles of giant strength are rare. I've only used a few wishes in 20 years (RT), and the few Artifacts that I've used have been for specific campaign purposes, and none remained in the hands of the PCs for very long. For the 4 2nd generation PCs (all L8), they average 6 perm. magic items each, mostly +1, some +2. ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 5 Apr 2003 to 7 Apr 2003 (#2003-96) *************************************************************
