Here, the tropical air tends to rise owing to the high solar flux that warms the underlying earth and water. It seems reasonable that low pressure, not high, is the dominant feature. Cold air masses are more dense and therefore exhibit relatively high pressure. Also, the equator is considered 0 degrees, not 90. The poles (N and S) are 90. Prevailing winds change direction approximately every 30 degrees latitude (jet streams mark these boundaries) but I'm not entirely certain why. The Coriolis effect certainly impacts this. > Ocean currents usually run in a circle and run east to > west along the eauator. Again, this is largely attributed to the Coriolis pseudoforce. As a consequence, the eastern shores of continents tend to be warmer than the western shores. One possibly exception to this is western Europe, where the Gulf Stream--deflected by the features of the North American landmass-- flows directly toward France and Britain. Ocean currents are heavily influenced by coastal shapes. Being a physical scientist and a teacher of earth science, chemistry, and physics, I've often wondered about Mystaran weather (and climes) myself. Some things can be explained conveniently by magic (e.g., Ylaruam a desert? Made this way by the Immortal destruction of Nithia?) but I better enjoy the game whenever the principles of reasonable, logical natural science can be applied. Given the pole areas of Mystara are actually wide open holes to the Hollow World; we can fantasize the extremes of how this affects climates in both the Hollow and Surface Worlds. Storm cells north of the equator move in a counter clockwise rotation, the opposite is for everything south of the equator. Would the opposite be applied in the Hollow World? Could the polar areas of Mystara be producing super cells that force super cooled air downward and freeze everything in its path? The effects of magic and openings to elemental planes could be doing a lot of damage to the overall equilibrium of the atmosphere. Some possible fantasy physics to show why such things like the superheated Ylaruam Basin (300 miles north of the equator), could exist without creating tremendous havoc on the neighbors. Upper level cells and vortexes, like those in the Princess Ark series. Air travel around the Known World could be very perilous, and possibly one reason why Alphatia never sent a full force of airships to conquer Thyatis. We would have to ask the gnomes more of these types of journeys… ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 2004 11:03:35 -0400 From: Donald Eric Kesler Subject: Re: Help with French Hello, I thank you, Sir. Dreamers of the Black Lotus = les rêveurs de lotus noir (not much sense here). I would go for "la companie du lotus noir" or " la companie rêveuse du lotus noir" or "la companie onirique du lotus noir". The first choice has my preference, it's simpler and closer to the original meaning even if it drops the "dream" idea. Champions of the Mist = Les champions du brouillard (this one does not mean much in French though because mist and fog are not tangible things that someone can master...I would go for "la companie du brouillard enchanté" (= The fellowship of the enchanted mist) The Gatekeepers = les gardiens de la porte / les gardiens du portail keep them coming, it's good practice for me. ===== Thibault SARLAT a.k.a Clenarius www.mystara.fr.st ICQ 16622177 MSN Messenger: clenarius@hotmail.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
