I think wiki is very well suited for collaborative efforts like Net Almanacs or encyclopedias, because it improves the development speed and the subsequent proofreading phase. Just put up a "limited access" wiki for the people working on those project and, when the project is finished, a conversion script from HTML to .txt or .pdf would satisfy all needs of the "normal" users. About the loss of authority problem raised by the use of such this tool, there are solutions are two: a) set up a good policy with efficient sanctions (suspension or removal of the right to write on the wiki); b) "trust by reputation", that means if I write something on the wiki about i.e. Northern Reaches, and then a Mystara player from Nordic countries corrects it (NRs are supposed to be M-Scandinavia, after all), I'm supposed to accept its correction only because he has more familiarity on that particular topic. Of course the same applies to that Nordic guy: if a person like the author of the NR gazetteer corrects the same on the wiki, then "ubi maior, minor cessat" :-) Of course the first solution is suited to projects with well defined objectives like the Almanacs, when the latter is a sort of "universal" rule. This works as well - for the purposes of my storyline, all that is required is that the northlands should be independent (at least on a de facto basis) by AC 600-650. Your background makes for an excellent story. >> The Duchy of Corunglain (proclaimed AC 628) > > In my version, I would probably rather set this as the date after which > the royal house is no longer able to provide effective aid to the > Attleson Dukes, and the Coruns start retaking the city. Fair enough. In the end, it still means that Corunglain is effectively lost to the royal house by that date. > As royal, and soon ducal, power faded in the north, the Attleson Dukes > were no longer able to extract tribute from their vassals, many of whom > had ties to the old Corun family. Do the dates still work, though? >> The Kingdom of Daelbar (proclaimed AC 669, nearly destroyed by orcs >> following Fall of Ardelphia, faded away by AC 875, >> territory claimed by Corunglain AC 891) > > The noble here would be a little bit more ambitious, declaring > independance entirely from Darokin, I suppose. Exactly - there were a handful that openly declared independence, and possibly received some sort of recognition from any outside powers that cared to notice. Daelbar and Almarand are two of these, each of which having established their own royal houses. In the case of Almarand, the king was a distant cousin of the royal house - nowhere near enough to make an actual claim to the throne, though. > Not as much to say here, this can mostly be integrated without much > difficulty. The date of Almarand's conquest suggests it allied with > Linton and Corun Houses against Mauntea in my "Merchants' War" (the last > big war before the Great Merger). Sounds good to me. The other details arising from the fall of that kingdom was that the Almarandian royal house, unwilling to surrender, fled for a safe haven. I haven't decided where they went, but their descendants are still out there, maintaining to this day their right to rule Almarand. > The Establishment of al-Zalenikah should probably be somewhere around > 250 AC, when canon sources indicate Ylari fleeing Thyatian colonization > entered Darokin. The conquest, however, wouldn't be by Darokin itself, > as Selenica remains an independant Kingdom up to 574 AC in my version. Good enough for me. I wanted to expand a bit on that element of Darokin's history, as well as write a brief, dark chapter. No doubt, Darokinians today would play down the whole business about al-Zalenikah. Whilst of course people have to agree to have their own works put up there for everyone to help create I thought that the idea of the Mystara Encyoclopaedia was an excellent one - and one that I hope expands rapidly as that is a resoruce I think the gameworld could use very well.
