In Polyhedron issue 100 (1994), there is an article by Bruce Heard: A Squid's Eye View. The article is about this Mindflayer studying alien worlds, in this case the little known Mystara. After reviewing various sources, the Mindflayer decides to visit Glantri's Great School of Magic, only to be trapped upon arrival. Here it is placed in a large crystal jar with its kobold servant for further study. The article doesn't reveal who trapped it, but it does reveal that the creature is alien to the Mystarans, yet not completely unknwon, as they know it is called an illithid and that it posses' powerful psionic abilities. This might be the source for the Illithid in Mark of Amber. If so, then it is a lone traveller lured here by Glantrian summonings. The Glantri KoM box set contains in one of its handout adventure sheets an illithid which intrudes in Glantri and seizes a Temple of Rad. I believe in Dragon Magazine #206, when it provides the background of the Karamekian school for magic, there is a throwaway reference to illithids having occupied the ruins in the past. Polyhedron #100 and GKoM both portray illithids as planar invaders. Mark of Amber puts the players into a dream like environment similar to the one in X2, and the players could easily be in another plane or dimension when they fight that one. Dragon #206 has nothing to say on whether illithids are native or not. Well, me and my family made it through our 4th natural disaster in 6 weeks. Again we had no phone or power, just got it turned on an hour ago. I will count my blessings when the season is over (in another 8 weeks). Thank you for your prayers and well wishes, I believe they helped this time around.
