We have the mechanics, now we can have some reasons. IMC I have ran a group of mages through the GSoM in Glantri. Each character was always trying to outdo the other in learning new spells. Since the campaign was solely on magic users, they had a very extensive spell list of many flashy spells, and some very subtle spells. While mages competed against each other in duels, some liked the speed of newer spells, while others liked the “surprises” of spells that looked like others with very different effects. Experienced mages could tell what instructors were influencing the students, and thus calculate their progression towards one craft over another. Those that caught on to this peerage tapping survived by subverting their public displays to be other than their real repertoire. This makes more work for the DM, but it was the campaign ever for fleshing out my Glantri, by allowing my players to fill in all the details themselves. I would imagine sportscaster like announcements in the middle of the duel, “Looks like young Eg lin is going to use the Flaemish backhand to cast his fireball… wow, we did not expect that one folks! Eglin used the backhand to cast a fireshield of green vapors; it looks like the young mage just gave enough of a surprise to Dawnie to gain the upper hand in this match.” ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 09:34:42 -0500 From: Dustin Clingman Subject: Re: Magical Evolution //NOTE: This email was sent last week sometime and never made it, so I am resending. It was based on the first post in the thread. -Dustin There is indeed written magic in Blackmoor, it is just much less potent than that which is distilled from using a spell focus. The main reason that Skelfer was able to defeat the Sorcerers in the Mage Wars was directly because he had a much higher potency and trained his students to use magic and battle with this new technique. Even the allied forces of the renegade mages could not stop the powerful tide during Skelfer's Sojourn. The main reason Blackmoorians show so much hatred towards sorcerers is the actions that they took in the last days of the Mage Wars. Many were taken prisoner, many were killed. The elimination of the Mage warlords was very clear and these few remaining enemies fought and destroyed a great many homes and villages. There are still a great number of secrets on parchment that have been overlooked. These may indeed hold the key to the future or a greatness not yet realized.... Need info from B10 ) Thanks to everyone that responded to my cry for help (both on and off list). It seems that the commercial PDF of B10 (made available from whichever licensee of Wizards) is incomplete. So, others who own that same PDF may want to be aware of this, unless of course a corrected version has surfaced. Anyway, thanks again to everyone who offered help. -Damon ===== May all your endeavors be Gold! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Off the top of my head (I'm @ work right now), several of the Pull-Out Sheets are not present - and one shows up twice (the weather page). The only page I specifically remember is missing is the 2nd page of NPC stats - that's the one I need right now. But I'm pretty sure that several pages right there are absent... perhaps Pull-Out Sheets II-III or V. To the best of my knowledge, the adventure itself and maps are correct and complete. -Damon ===== May all your endeavors be Gold! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I have Mithras as the god for Church of Karameikos and Order of the Griffen. This provides the most options, especially for the bad side of church and good side. One side believes in helping others to show the good faith, while the other want witch hunts and inquisitions, ala dark ages style. Throw vampires and werewolves and gypsy folklore, you got a good mix of wierd stuff and exciting adventures. -- Joaquin __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
