Actually, the idea of introducing ourselves is pretty good. There are only a few folks on the list I have even the vaguest mental "picture" of and that's from lurking about for... gosh, I don't know how long. Steve Carter born 26/11/71 living in Halifax, NS began playing "basic" D&D in 1984; since then I've played Champions, Villains & Vigilantes, Rolemaster, Battletech, AD&D, Robotech, Rifts, PFRPG, White Wolf Storyteller games (that is until the goth-LARPers got way too weird), WEG's StarWars, ShadowRun, AD&D 2nd ed then finally Rolemaster again. Mystara is very special to me. Possibly because the D&D game I started playing in was horribly run. True munchkinism vs a killer DM. I started DMing because I loved Tolkien, Mary Stewart's Merlin series and the youth series upon which "The Black Cauldron" was based and wanted those kinds of adventures in my RPing- meaningful stories, not roll dice and kill stuff between being killed by laser traps and platinum dragons. I'm a sysadmin during the day and a "slum lord" at night, on the weekend and any vacation day I'm allowed. Despite being a lord I don't feel like either a fighter or tenth level. Despite being a sysadmin I don't feel like a wizard. My BA is comparative religion and I'm definitely not a cleric or druid. Multi-classing in real life really prevents you from attaining any prestige classes. Very happily married for nearly three years. Our wonderful daughter is one year, one month and three weeks old. And someday I hope to be able to see them for more than an hour or two each day. I don't post much here because when I have spare time I spend it with my family. I write and read during my lunch breaks. My wife isn't a gamer but loves SF and fantasy, praise the Immortals. We'll be reading "The Hobbit" to our daughter as soon as we can. My pet project for Mystara is slowly developing a more detailed history for Ochalea. After listening to the debate I sparked on the subject I'm working on origins of the ogre magi population that supposedly dominated the island and oppressed the native lupins centuries ago. My theme for Ochalea is that it's NOT oriental adventures for Mystara. It's NOT mediaeval China, Japan or any other Asian nation. The closest approximation is that it is a pseudo- mediaeval- China / Japan / Korea if it were situated next to the Roman and Persian empires and suffered domination by them for 1500 years or more. I'm interested in how the "western" nations affected the "eastern" culture on Ochalea. How the original culture developed from mingling human, goblinoid, canine and spirit elements. I'm also interested in how "eastern" elements would have affected the "western" nations. That's all. I should work now. Oh, well, guess I'll write a line or two about myself... My complete name is Giulio Nils Caroletti, although on the list I often sign "Iulius Sergius Scaevola" (one of my alter-ego NPCs in the Mystara campaign I dm), or "la Volpe", my university nickname (which, in Italian, means "the Fox"). Born 17/04/1980, I am a 24 years old Italian male (with foreign names one never knows, so I decided it was better to mention it!!!!) and I am trying to finish the university...I hope to be Doctor in Physics by this time next year... I am born in Roma, but now I live in Modena, where I am studying. Modena is famous for its red sparkling wine ("lambrusco"), the Duomo (one of the most important example of romanic churches in Europe), the parmesan cheese, the "prosciutto", "salame" and "mortadella" (various types of ham and cold pork meats), the "balsamic vinegar", and, last but definitely not least, for the Ferrari (the famous Maranello is a suburb of Modena). I started to play in 1991 with the Red box. The last 8 years I have been playing regularly in my own version of Mystara, with home-rules that combine the AD&D 2Ed. rules and the old D&D boxes. I have also played in Vampire, Cyberpunk and 3E campaigns, as well (plus some minor appearances in other games); I am also currently playing in a AD&D 2E Ravenloft campaign. What else? Sometimes I write a lot for Mystara, sometimes I don't have time. I like dragons, werewolves, dwarves, Thyatians (not strange, since I'm from Roma), '70s progressive rock music and beautiful+intelligent women, and I dislike Alphatians [especially the Stalker 8-)], stupid+chauvinist men, and everything that stinks. I think I even said too much! Giulio ___________________________________ Nuovo Yahoo! Things are slow at work, I may as well join in.... My name's Geoff Gander, I'm 30 years old, and living in Ottawa, Canada with my lovely wife, two dogs, and 11 month old son (the latter of which explains my decreased output). By day, I work for the federal government, and by night, well, I try to sleep when I can :-). Seriously, though, I spend many evenings tinkering away on Mystara projects - one of which I posted yesterday. I've been playing D&D since 1984 (my first adventure was B2), and over the years I've played more game systems than I care to mention right now (though I enjoy Paranoia, Top Secret/SI, GURPS, and Harn). Right now I'm playing one a month in another gaming group, but dream of restarting my Mystara campaign (someday...someday). Anyone else? This is a great idea. I am Tim Brannan, 36, been playing for 25 years of that. I live in the Northwest burbs of Chicago. Married, 10 years, two sons. The oldest will be getting old enough soon for RPGs, I just have not decided which game yet! I have played tons of games, but it is *D&D that remains my first love. I also play a lot of Eden's Unisystem and I have been writing for Eden for years. Mystara was my first world. I played it for years taking on a path of divergent evolution in which it was discovered that "Greyhawk" was beyond the ocean to the east and a war left Glantri ravaged and soon it became an ecclastical monarchy. I later did this whole Ravenloft thing for years, ending with me deciding for the rest of the world that the core land of Barovia in Ravenloft came from a forgotten province in Glantri. http://www.xtreme-gaming.com/theotherside/Ravenloft.php I have been on this list for years, as web warlock, as tbrannan, as st2376 back when I was reading it on the campus mainframe and maybe others I have since forgotten. My current Mystara project is get a good map of "my" world with Mystara and Greyhawk together. One day... I also want to get more Mystara content onto my website, but it has to wait in line behind everything else that needs updating. Besides all of that I have written the Netbooks of Witches. You can see those at my site. AD&D 2ed: http://www.xtreme-gaming.com/theotherside/downloads.php and d20: http://www.xtreme-gaming.com/theotherside/libermysterium.php I also was a writer for Eden's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" RPG, WitchCraft and the upcoming "Ghosts of Albion" RPG. I also produce the quasi-official Buffy RPG adventure "The Dragon and The Phoenix" which Buffy actress Amber Benson herself said was great (but she doesn't play rpgs. ;) ) http://www.xtreme-gaming.com/theotherside/dap_ep0.php My current interest in Mystara would be to update it to a d20 Mod game or even one using Eden's Unisystem. Mostly I lurk now, but I love to read what everyone is doing and I enjoy that this list is one of the best lists for any official D&D game world. Ok then, I'm Giampaolo Agosta. I was born 28/XII/1975, in Roma (just like Giulio). I'm currently living in Milan. I'm a PhD in Computer Engineering, and I work as a term researcher (in compiler technology and design of computer architectures, for those in the know) and university lecturer. I started my gaming career some 15 or 16 years ago, with the Red Box. In time, I've also played AD&D 2e and Star Wars D6. In Mystara, I'm interested in non-standard races (especially Lupins and Rakasta), Dwarves, conversions to AD&D 2e and in the issues of language, ethnography and evolution of religions -- though I'm not nearly as productive as Giulio. I'm also one of the (not too many, I fear) fans of the Savage Coast. GP ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 15:54:10 -0500 From: Chris Cherrington Subject: Re: Anyone? I am a 25 year veteran of D&D, mainly Mystara, been playing since it was Chain Mail. I wish my 15 year old was interested, but I have a 10 and 7 year old who love Middle Earth, so I still have a chance to make them nerds as my wife puts it. I have been married for 10 plus years. Worked as a chef for 15, computer guru for 5, now I am going back to food service as a director this time. I live in Florida, but I have been all over the states (PA, TX, NC, MI, CT, CA, HI, NY, and LA), and in two weeks I will be moving to Texas. I enjoy the outdoors and I am a veteran of the Boy Scouts, done just about everything they have as a scout and as a leader. I like all the intrigue of Mystara, love playing Paladins, Faris’, elves, Hin, Glantrian Mages, and psychotic elves from the Shadow Coast. I have DM’ed most of Mystara, and played Forgotten Realms. I tinkered quite a bit with other systems and games, but Mystara will always be my first and last love. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 17:37:55 -0600 From: James Mishler Subject: Re: Anyone? I am James Mishler, 35 years of age, been playing for some 24 years of that. Mystara, then simply "The Known World," was one of the first settings I ever ran in. I can't say that I played in it much myself, as I've almost always been the DM. I'm also very fond of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. By day I am an editor on Scrye, Comics Buyer's Guide, and Comics & Games Retailer magazines for Krause Publications, here in the Great Wild Woods of Wisconsin. By night... well, by night if I'm lucky I actually get the time to come home, and end up vegetating if I don't just crash. Three magazines are a lot of work, which is why my output here has fallen to almost nothing... The same fate befell my various freelance projects, including the "HackWurld of Mystaros" for Kenzer & Company. It is still there, on the "to do" list, which is becoming much weathered and yellowed from lack of attention... Working 6 1/2 days a week can do that to you. Hopefully those circumstances will change after the new year... You'd think that even with all that work, yet with no wife, kids, girlfriend, or even pets to tend to, that I would have *some* time to do that kind of stuff. But I don't. I have something far, far worse: deadlines, three of them, monthly... one every week of the month, save for one blessed week a month when I have no deadline. And I'm sure they will start another magazine for me to work on just to take that away from me... I call that my "week to shop, wash clothes, and pretend I have a life." Honestly, though, I do have a little time for gaming. I run a Wilderlands of High Fantasy campaign every other week using the D20 Conan rules from Mongoose. However, I will be shifting that over the Castles & Crusades at first opportunity. I also play (yes, miracle of miracles, *play*) in an irregular D&D game on Thursdays... as three of us are editors, we average one game a month, or thereabouts, though it is ostensibly weekly... And that's about all for now... must... sleep...
