You're thinking of Mahmatti Running-Elk, c. 452 BC. A long time ago, but it might be a good place to start thinking. Thanks for reminding me. (The Glantri reference in Gaz14 has always been odd, as no one was even really around Glantri at the time indicated. The Flaems didn't arrive until 395 AC, and the elves had disappeared largely around 1700 BC- when the cataclysm occurred. So who was the mysterious wizard woman who enthralled Mahmatti... hmm.) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 10:05:39 +0100 From: Giampaolo Agosta Subject: Re: Atruaghin vs. Glantri Andrew Theisen wrote: > > You're thinking of Mahmatti Running-Elk, c. 452 BC. I know it's a long time before the time of the GAZ, but, as you say: > (The Glantri reference in Gaz14 has always been odd, > as no one was even really around Glantri at the time > indicated. The Flaems didn't arrive until 395 AC, and > the elves had disappeared largely around 1700 BC- when > the cataclysm occurred. So who was the mysterious > wizard woman who enthralled Mahmatti... hmm.) So either Mahmatti became Immortal much later, or some other plot must be devised. IIRC the text in Atruaghin GAZ, it seems to imply that at Mahmatti's time Glantri was already a magic-strong nation. One simple solution would be to move Mahmatti's ascension to a more suitable time. In any case, there was some interest in Atruaghin shamanic magic on the part of Glantrian wizards, which might be used in explaining the diplomatic incident. As to the Atruaghin, there's no need to give them a unified government to involve them in a war with Glantri -- it may simply be one of the more warlike clans (Horse clan) or the Bear clan (which has contact with the outside world). BTW, the Bear clan seems to have a unified leadership (a chief elected yearly). -- Giampaolo Agosta http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 11:51:20 +0100 From: Havard Faanes Subject: Re: Atruaghin vs. Glantri --- Andrew Theisen skrev: > (The Glantri reference in Gaz14 has always been odd, > as no one was even really around Glantri at the time > indicated. It seems that way indeed- the text describes Mahmatti "caught in a web of evil magic and deceit woven by a female magic-user deep in the heart of Glantri." She was also trying to learn more about the shamanic rituals of the Atruaghin people. That's not a bad idea. At the moment, though, I'm leaning towards something involving the Tiger Clan, as everyone else (except the Turtles) would have been relatively isolated atop the plateau... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 13:19:21 +0200 From: Ville Lähde Subject: Re: Anyone? Joining the fray, if I manage to get through. Someone busted our old faithful unix program in the university, stealing passwords and stuff. The program is out of use currently, along with my archives and address books. Have to make do with this cumbersome webmail program. Mrrrrrr... I'm Ville Lähde, a Finnish male born 1972. I started DMing regularily OD&D Mystara in 1988 if I remember correctly. I bought the Red Box in summer 1984 I think, but it took some time to find bloody anyone interested in RPGs. We tried it a few times but failed miserably. In the meantime we played a little MERP and "Miekka & Magia" (one of the first Finnish systems). But in the first class of our high school, at the age of 16, I managed to find a group of guys who were interested in playing regularily. And our first and only campaign has been going on ever since, with two original PCs alive. We started with two fanmade articles in a Finnish RPG zine "Seikkailija" (Adventurer), featuring the rise of an elder god. But by using the divine intervention trick in the B-series collection module's version of Silver Princess I transported our group to Haven and onwards to Treshold. (Just plain laziness, I didn't have energy to write adventures for the original setting.) We played through a couple of my own adventures and a lot of the old B-series thingies. Veiled Society is still one of my favourites. But the real breakthrough was Night's Dark Terror - it really galvanised our group, and apart from one "deserter" and one late arrival we've been together since. I have gathered some notes on our campaign in Shawn's Vaults under the heading "Twin Campaigns" in the Adventures section. The word "twin" refers to a subordinate campaign that I located in 500 AC. It started from a one-on-one session with the excellent Blade of Vengeance module. I'm a big fan of the British made TSR modules in General (both D&D and AD&D). Besides this high school group (with whom we've had also an ongoing AD&D campaign since 1989, again with two original PCs), I've been playing nearly weekly with another group of friends since 1993. We've played mostly Harnmaster, but also Warhammer, Paranoia (my second favourite game), Call of Cthulhu, Timelords, Millenium's End, Rolemaster and a few other games. Currently I'm DMing for that group the first time - it's my second Mystara campaign, although played with HARP. It's been fun this far. I especially like the comfortability of a consciously "canon" campaign. It's a real holiday from the self-made tumbleweed of the old campaign. I live in Tampere, a cozy old industrial town in mid-southern Finland. I'm a post-graduate philosophy researcher in the department of philosophy, University of Tampere. I'm doing a PhD on Rousseau's philosophy. My other activities include lecturing on environmental philosophy and related subjects, sitting in the editorial boards of a publishing cooperative and a philosophy magazine, and writing the occasional political article. (I used to very active in various social movements, but right now I'm in a dormant phase.) My favourite leisure activities are playing board games and drinking beer with my pals - mainly Settlers, Puerto Rico, Kremlin and Cargassonne - or just plain drinking beer with my pals. I live in a nice old stone house in the middle of the city. (Well, it's from the 1920's, so it's not that old for you who live in old cultural cities. But in Tampere it's part of the old layer. Our city suffered terribly during the civil war in the 1910's, and a lot of the buildings were destroyed.) It's a cozy life with my wife. No kids. My wife is not into RPGs and not into fantasy or scifi literature. It works quite well actually. Something to draw me back into the real world... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 12:26:41 +0100 From: Havard Faanes Subject: Christmas present! Hello! And here's my short bio: Marco Dalmonte Born: January, 8th 1975 in Faenza, Emilia Romagna region (north-east of Italy, on the Adriatic western shore) Currently working as a sales clerk in a factory in the Ravenna province. I started playing with the red Box in 1990 after following an invitation of a friend of mine at the high school ("come and see: we're playing a game where you can do everything with your fantasy!") and I've been hooked ever since, later introducing my younger brother to it too (much to my parents' discomfort :p). I'm still playing a modified version of D&D (still OD&D, but with some additional rules), although to a much reduced rate now due to real life duties (I used to play three times a week a couple of years ago with 3 different groups: that was the climax of my DMing career :p). I've mostly played in Mystara, although I'm experienced with Spelljammer (played for 1 year) and Ravenloft too (I've been playing RL since year 2000 and I've been following it since 1998), but my heart stays true to Mystara (I especially love Darokin!). Next year I'm gonna marry on the day of my birthday after one year of living together with my girlfriend, so I'm getting ready for the big event. ;) I'm not that much into 3E, but I'm working hard to translate everything I know of Mystara to 3.5E before D&D 4th Edition is out! ^_^ Cheers! How about adding a dark history to Argenta, our beloved Silver Princess? Could not some of her ancestors been in the valley north of Glantri, making the area deep in the heart of Glantri? Even the story behind the Silver Princess could be a match. Elves were present, and so were dwarves. These dwarves would later be the dwarves of Minrothad, so they have had friendships with elves from before... ============================================================ From: Andrew Theisen Date: 2004/12/20 Mon AM 06:09:12 EST To: MYSTARA-L@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] Atruaghin vs. Glantri --- Giampaolo Agosta wrote: > So either Mahmatti became Immortal much later, or > some other plot must be devised. It's a map of the Atruaghin plateau as it is supposed to be (according to the 24 mile hex maps of it), not as it somehow got shrunk to on the Gaz14 map (really, if you compare the 24 and the 8, it somehow got a whole hunk of the center cut out of it). There's still a little bit more to do with it- names, etc- but it's pretty complete. It was previously available only in smaller portions, but I've put them all together and added some to it.
