Two things. I am becoming increasingly fascinated with a Wild West Fantasy genre. And there's some aspect of this in Red Steel Campaign. I wanted to dabble in that real quick to see what people think... Secondly, I wanted to get all the information and material on that. I have the Red Steel boxed set. Is there other material out there on this area of the Savage Coast? Please point me to any published works... - joaquin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Indeed, that's what Cimarron (and to a lesser extent Guadalante and Almarron) is about: gunslinging paladin sheriffs, goblin natives, tortle peasants, etc. > Secondly, I wanted to get all the information and > material on that. Red Steel means you don't have the Savage Baronies stuff, you'll find it in the online version (Savage Coast Campaign Setting). There's also the original VotPA article, which provides a different take on the subject (with repeating hand crossbows instead of wheellock pistols), as well as the usual short story about Haldemar & friends visiting a saloon in Smoketown and a mining village. Also some ideas on staging tortle peasants vs. human miners adventures. That's more or less all the published works on Cimarron. You might be able to draw from non-Mystaran sources, though. The Wild West feel of Red Steel is largely confined to the Claw Peninsula (Cimmaron County and its surroundings), the rest of the region is more of a swashbuckling spanish sort of thingy. Not to sound discouraging, just pointing that out. That being said, there are many areas on Mystara in which you can stage a "western" like campaign, depending on which particular elements of westerns you are looking for. In the vein of settlers on the outskirts of civilized society, with bandits/natives/claimjumpers on all sides, Claw Peninsula certainly works. Other areas include: Port Tenobar and the surrounding lands of Darokin- Tenobar borders on the Atruaghin Clans (Indian) territory, and is a region that is claimed by many lesser barons and counts and things (the Border Magistrates) and is only nominally connected to the "greater" Republic. Definitely a frontierland. Akesoli and its surrounding lands- Much like Tenobar, though with the added mystique of the exotic western nation of Sind on its borders. Krugel Orclands of the Hollow World- The orcs there are described very much like the Gauchos of the Pampas of South America, who are very like the cowboys of the Old West. Basically, any territory in a nation bordering on the wilderness, where there is little direct control by the rulers of the land, and corruption and greed can set in would be appropriate locations for a "Wild West" type of campaign. Even places like Ochalea would work- one of the reasons the Kurosawa movies "The Seven Samurai" and "Yojimbo" were adapted into westerns ("The Magnificent Seven" and "A Fistful of Dollars") is that the situations in feudal Japan and the Old West were very similar- lawlessness and rule by despots, bandits, oppressed peasantry, villagers trying desperately to eke out an existence in the face of these grander threats. > Secondly, I wanted to get all the information and > material on that. Go to the Wizards site- http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads About 2/3 the way down, you can download the Savage Coast AD&D materials (you already have the boxed set, but the Savage Coast dl on this page also includes the Savage Baronies info, plus you can get the Orc's Head peninsula accessory, and the SC Monstrous Compendium). There were several articles that initially introduced the SC in Dragon Magazine, spanning #171-181, 183, 185-186, and 188, 192, and 196 essentially. The rules for the "Red Curse" are very different, though. Other than that, there was a recent Dragon article that attempted to update the Red Steel set for 3rd Edition rules (#315). Several people have also done things with/for Red Steel/SC on the Vaults. I've also heard very good things about Sidewinder: Recoiled (http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=product&productid=118994) which is a 3rd Edition product that details an Old West setting for D&D. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 02:29:58 -0700 From: Andrew Theisen Subject: Re: Mystara Wild Wild West?
