Why have a printing press when you can just have 20 or so acolytes do the work for you. Why build a ship that magically propels itself when you can just buy 80 slaves, or hire 80 laborers that cost you 1gp a month if you are really generous. Indeed, some nations have exactly that problem: Alphatia, for all its slaves, has a lack of workforce -- with 20% of the population being aristocrats, who tends to the plantations? On this line, the Alphatian skyships are built with magically enhanced riggings to reduce the crew on non-military ships. That may also be the reason why practical applications of magic are much more popular in Alphatia than in Thyatis. > Depending on how you play out WotI or Red Arrow, one of these or both would be the catalyst to bring "modernization" to Mystara. Karameikos would be ripe for taking on that roll as well as the Dwarves with the after effects of their civil war could put a lot of their experiments to practical use as a neccesity. That's a very good idea. I'll check on the GAZ. Checked. I was wrong, the magic just served to physically divide them from neighbouring cultures. Perhaps a dragon nation is allied to Thyatis and agrees to provide "troops" (NOT mounts!) solely because of the mutual hatred of Alphatia. After WotI, with Alphatia destroyed, they would part ways more-or-less amicably because the threat is gone.
