About dragons and alphatians, I wrote in my "Old Alphatia history" (in the vaults) that there was a bitter enmity between the two from the times of the alphatian homeworld. So IMC I imagined that many thyatians dragons (but just the thyatian ones) help the RAF willingly, while the few alphatian dragons live quite incospicuously in the remote corners of the alphatian island just to "keep an eye" over Alphatia. Anyway IMC I imagined the RAF as composed mainly by hippogriphs and wyverns riders (pegasi and griffons being too much "elven mounts" for my taste, even if some thyatian elves sure will be in the RAF) and something like 25 dragons (more than half of the thyatian population of dragons IMC). Note that I consider dragon very powerful in strenght and magic, so IMC 25 dragons could sink the same number of flying vessels quite easily. Anyway he RAF sure should be quite big to balance alphatian skynavy, and I think that's quite possible: Thyatis has more than 3 million inhabitants and so has the resources to breed aerial mounts and train aerial fighter. BTW, I think the RAF is aided in battle by special "flying mages", and they too should bee quite a large number. bye Francesco ___________________________________ Yahoo! When Ochalea secedes from the Empire in 1007 AC, the dragons choose to resign their commissions - and refuse to return to duty even after Thyatis expands, since Alphatia no longer is a threat. So the balance of power stays more or less intact, and we get several dozen powerful, cunning, militarily-trained dragons sitting on Ochalea as an added bonus. That's a nice idea. If we assume that Chung-Eun (aka MChina) exists, and that its population of /lungs/ (oriental dragons) don't want the Brun powers to interfere with their isolationist country, it is possible that they sent some of their kin to Ochalea. There, they are to watch that the two empires, Thyatis and Alphatia, remain in a state of cold war, in a standoff that prevents either of looking east. Thus, those dragons helped Thyatis keep an air force that would match Alphatia's. After WotI and the destruction of Alphatia, the dragons would not return to service in Thyatian armies; in fact, they would probably start acting against the Thyatians who would explore eastward (albeit probably not too openly). Perhaps they kept out of > that one since the Alphatians didnt bring in all of > their fleet? Well, IMO the best way to resolve that, and the fact that Alphatia took the hard route to Glantri (through enemy Thyatis) rather than land in friendly Norwold ports and march Wendar to Glantri, is to actually use the Dragonlord trilogy's premise as an explanation. Because in WotI NW is explained away as being in turmoil because of the elves (Eiryndul's work), but that's a bit weak. Elven agitation (as well as other local factors) could explain why NW is not helpful to the Alphatian war effort, but not why Alphatia wouldn't pass through NW. So, let's say that prior Alphatians efforts to hold NW in the past have been opposed by the Wyrmsteeth dragons (including, IIRC Dragonlord, not only the destruction of a whole colonial effort but also the annihilation of a naval war fleet that was coming to its defense from Alphatian mainland). So, the Alphatians know that there is a powerful nation of dragons in Norwold, and that don't want the Alphatians invading their territories. After that episode, the Alphatians agreed to let NW be. Over the following centuries, the Thyatians and the Alphatians have built a few cities on the coasts of NW, but the Alphatians have kept away from the dragons' territories. Including Ericall. During WotI, the Alphatians have dismissed the idea of attacking Glantri through Norwold, because they knew they would have to bring a large war force to Norwold, and move it through dragon territory (mountains of Norwold, of Denagoth, of Wendar). Remembering what happened to their fleet of old, they prefer to attack by way of Thyatis instead, which they feel will be easier (they have already done that a few decades ago) especially after their softening of Thyatis (with the breakaway of some of its colonies, the corruption of its military, and other stuff described in WotI). ___________________________________________________________ Herve Musseau http://www.geocities.com/hmusseau/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? That would also be interesting -- there isn't much on the past of dragons and what they where up to during the Blackmoor age.>> I'll search around this weekend for it. If I cannot find it I'll write up a brief summary maybe Monday or Tuesday.
