After spending more time than anticipated getting it right, and ensuring that it meshes with Thorf's Wendar map, I've finished the first map of the nortern wildlands, set in the AC 1000 time period. I am a bit confused: what region is mapped here, exactly? Should not be Denagoth there? The Northern Wildlands are part of the X11 map (Wendar, Denagoth, etc.) This area appears as the homeland of the Barbarians that overthrow Landryn Teriak, IIRC, in the background story of Saga of the Shadowlord. AFAIK, the name The Northern Wildlands comes from Saga of the Shadowlord (X11?), in the premade PC section, which features a character from this region. As for the geograpgical features, I guess they are derived from maps with a bigger scale. I really should let Geoff answer this one though, he will probably know the details better :) Håvard ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 18:13:21 +0100 From: la Volpe Subject: Re: Adapting materials from other settings Definitely! In X11, the map of Wendar and Denagoth depicts the region to the northwest of the two nations as being the "Northern Wildlands" - relatively lush in the southeast, but becoming more arid to the northwest. Taking that as a base, I looked at the work of Christian Constantin and Thibault Sarlat, in which a good deal of detail was added. The general landforms remained the same, though - pleasant in the southeast, but becoming more inhospitable to the northwest. I have maintained this geographical layout. I also consulted existing maps of the Adri Varma Plateau to see how far north the escarpment extended - the plateau, in fact, slopes down to the north over many miles - this is also reflected in the map. The liberties I took with the map include creating the Soreth Spur - essentially an outgrowth of the Mengul Range; the Muil River watershed, which (IMO) provides a plausible reason why the Moors of Chlyras could exist so far inland without any visible water sources coming from Wendar; and of course the assorted ruins that reflect the history I wrote. I am planning to use the basic map template to create a map showing Nimbeth at its height, but I'm open to suggestions of what other maps of the region people would like to see. Hope this helps, Geoff ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 15:19:58 -0400 From: Steven Carter Subject: Re: Adapting materials from other settings Bought the Swashbuckling Adventures (7th Sea setting) and 3e Oriental Adventures (Rokugan setting) for material in an ocean-based, nation-hopping campaign between Ochalea, Isle of Dawn, Thyatis, Ierendi, Minrothad, Karameikos and the Savage Coast. Never happened unfortunately. Both books have lots of useful stuff as far as classes and skills go.=20 Lots of options for using culture-specific 7th Sea nation-classes for various Known World nations. Real life interfered though before I could create a table of equivalencies for my players. I was going to drop any class, skill or feat that relied on firearms though= . I don't think the d20 SbA book gives enough cultural detail though.=20 Just tons of classes, skills, feats, etc. If I had unlimited resources of time and money (ha!) I'd pick up some of the original books. In one of their upcoming adventures, the players are going to come across a recently published book. This book lists the greatest swordsmen of the Known World. The book will prove useful for one of the characters who is an expert in the normal sword. When she gets ready to attain greater levels of weapon mastery, she will just need to consult her guide. Does anyone have any suggestions for pre-exisiting characters who should be in this book? Also, would anyone object to me using the names of some of the contributers to this list service? Giampaolo Agosta, Havard Faanes, Thibault Sarlat and Erol Bayburt all sound like the names of mighty sword weilders to me. Where would such characters be located? :) Regards and Best Wishes, Donald Eric Kesler ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 23:25:16 -0600 From: James Mishler Subject: Re: Grandmaster Sword Wielders of Mystara "Also, would anyone object to me using the names of some of the contributers to this list service? Giampaolo Agosta, Havard Faanes, Thibault Sarlat and Erol Bayburt all sound like the names of mighty sword weilders to me. Where would such characters be located? :)" No objections here! :) I'd say Giampaolo Agosta would be canonically from Caurenze, in the Principalities of Glantri. Perhaps he wanders the Known World now because of a feud with the ruling di Malapietra Family (pre-WotI). He's probably a grand master with the rapier. Whether he uses a poisoned blade is of much debate among friends and enemies. If he's still alive after the WotI, he might be using his talents to fight against the humanoid incursions into his old homeland... Havard Faanes, of course, is from the cold Northern Reaches, and the 6'8" Antalian is a grand master with the bastard sword. Not that he needs it, mind you, as being a powerful and mighty northern warrior, he could slay dragons with his bare hands... or drink them under the table, at least. If he's not out slaying dragons, he's probably in a tavern spending the dragon's hoard... Thibault Sarlat is from New Averoigne. Like his fellow Glantrian, he is a wanderer, and is as renown for his cartographic skills as for his talent with the blade. He has vowed that he, and his blade, shall not rest until he has mapped every corner of Mystara. Thus he will be most difficult to find. Erol Bayburt is from Hule, a mysterious warrior from out of the Utter West. He arrived in the Known World on an Ierendi merchantman, and immediately began hunting down and challenging the mightiest swordsmen to a duel using his infamous paired scimitars. Most duels were merely to first blood, as he believes that the defeated must pass on the tales of his greatness, for unlike his fellow countrymen, Erol never lies... or so he claims. The problem won't be finding Erol, it will be defending yourself against him when he discovers your own claims of greatness with the blade... Just some ideas... :) James ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 28 Nov 2005 to 29 Nov 2005 (#2005-224) ****************************************************************
