Where would such characters be located? :) How common are surnames in your version of the Known World? FWIW, I'm in the northern part of Chicagoland (just south of the Wisconsin border), but my family name comes from the town of Bayburt, in Turkey. Translating that into the Mystara equivalent is left as an exercise to the DM :) Also FWIW, my middle name is Kemal - and I think that name would work better as (part of) a master swordsman's name. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2005 10:48:32 +0200 From: Ville V Lahde Subject: Alternative: Ghyr in Northern Wildlands First of all, thanks a lot Geoff for the map. A PC in our group has a dominion on the nortwestern border of Wendar (gained after X11 of course), and we have had some adventures in that area. In the future major conflicts will take place there, so the map will be extremely useful. We also played Quest for the Heartstone in our campaign after X11, and I placed Ghyr right there where you have Soreth. I have an old wallmap that I drew on the basis of canon maps, and I happened to draw a similar mountain spur on the precise location of Soreth Spur. Funny coincidence. So the map is also very useful for anyone wanting to play that module, since this seems to be the best location fo Ghyr. Not too far away, and not messing with the rest of the material too much. When writing the background for Henadin's tribe (if one wishes to include them in the Northland history), the "barbarians" mentioned in X11, one should bear in mind that the tribe has an alliance with gold dragons. IMC I connected this with the obscure deity mentioned in the Heartstone module (one-who-watches-over-us or something). Encounters with powerful families have become something of a recurring theme in my campaign, so I would have to say that they are very common. The players once wisely backed down from a fight with one fellow because his last name was d'Ambreville. Erol Kemal Bayburt it is. Now I just need to sort out where such a name would originate in Mystara. Perhaps he wanders the Known World now because of a feud with the ruling di Malapietra Family (pre-WotI). He's probably a grand master with the rapier. Whether he uses a poisoned blade is of much debate among friends and enemies. If he's still alive after the WotI, he might be using his talents to fight against the humanoid incursions into his old homeland... > > Havard Faanes, of course, is from the cold Northern Reaches, and the 6'8" Antalian is a grand master with the bastard sword. Not that he needs it, mind you, as being a powerful and mighty northern warrior, he could slay dragons with his bare hands... or drink them under the table, at least. If he's not out slaying dragons, he's probably in a tavern spending the dragon's hoard... > > Thibault Sarlat is from New Averoigne. Like his fellow Glantrian, he is a wanderer, and is as renown for his cartographic skills as for his talent with the blade. He has vowed that he, and his blade, shall not rest until he has mapped every corner of Mystara. Thus he will be most difficult to find. > > Erol Bayburt is from Hule, a mysterious warrior from out of the Utter West. He arrived in the Known World on an Ierendi merchantman, and immediately began hunting down and challenging the mightiest swordsmen to a duel using his infamous paired scimitars. Most duels were merely to first blood, as he believes that the defeated must pass on the tales of his greatness, for unlike his fellow countrymen, Erol never lies... or so he claims. The problem won't be finding Erol, it will be defending yourself against him when he discovers your own claims of greatness with the blade... > > Just some ideas... :) > > James > > ******************************************************************** > The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp > The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com > To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM > with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2005 06:01:17 -0800 From: Geoff Gander Subject: Re: Alternative: Ghyr in Northern Wildlands You're right, that is an interesting coincidence! How large is Ghyr, and how old is it supposed to be, anyhow? If it is less than 1000 years old, and has had little, or limited, contact with other nations, it could be placed roughly where you had it IYC, as Soreth was a dead city by AC 0, and there is enough land in that corner to accommodate another small nation. Otherwise, people could do as Andrew suggests on the MMB (as per the interesting Marshes of Maggorath thread - eldersphinx, if you're here, could you post it on the MML too?), and place it due north of Denagoth. In one of their upcoming adventures, the players are going to come across a recently published book. This book lists the greatest swordsmen of the Known World. The book will prove useful for one of the characters who is an expert in the normal sword. When she gets ready to attain greater levels of weapon mastery, she will just need to consult her guide. Does anyone have any suggestions for pre-exisiting characters who should be in this book? From Glantri, several of the Belcadiz could qualify for fencing masters, especially Carnelia and her brother Diego (who also doubles as a Zorro-like hero). From Thyatis, it is likely that some gladiator masters. Naturally, Thincol would be a two-handed sword grandmaster (he has probably mastered other weapons as well), and Stefania Torion is a notorius swordswoman, even though not necessarily a true master. Anaxibius is also a noted swordsman, though he fights with a short sword. While these are not from the Known World, but from the Savage Coast, they might still be of use: 1) The headmasters of the four fencing schools are likely to be all grandmasters of the rapier (in OD&D terms). The Verdegild master may also be a master with the longsword, which is often used by Eusdrian duelists. 2) In the ``En garde'' article, Fernando, a constabulary for Sir John of the Wain, uses the death move of the Cavalcante school, so he has reached the highest level of skill in the rapier. He is an 11th level Honorbound Fighter, as well as one of the Afflicted. The history that I wrote is very campaign-specific, but perhaps something might be useful for others. I wished to adapt the Wildlands to the following facts in my campaign: - The cults of demonic deities like Darga were brought to Denagoth, Wendar and Heldann by tribes of white-skinned "barbarians" that arrived there around 0 AC. They were closely related to Antalians, but their language and culture were very different. (These tribes formed the background for Henadin's tribe in X11, the followers of Gylgarid in X13, the people of Denagoth etc.) - The "wilder" elves (non-Ilsundalian, descentants of scattered Blackmoor-age colonies) in Wendar, Geffronell and Lothenar battled these humans for centuries. - The Antalian and "Barbarian" cults managed to live side by side for some time, but in the end they clashed and the "barbarians" were driven into the marginal lands. (I wrote a history of the cult of Darga in Vestland to accommodate some stuff in X13.) - The influence of the golden dragons in the Wildlands started after 450, when a covenant between the two races was forged. Influence of the dark deities lessened in the Wildlands, but remained in Denagoth and Heldann. - The cult of Idris arrived with the migration of Nebunar's tribe into Essuria. New wars between Lotherar and Geffronell elves and humans took place. (Note: There was once a discussion about a Gondolin-style elven refuge in Mengul. This conflict might be a good starting point for it?) - IMC the modern-day Wendar was born after 830, when human settlers from the south (mainly Thyatians) arrived there. A confederation with the local elves is born (I fashioned Wendar after X11, which seems to make it much more a human than elven nation). --> GHYR was founded after "the Crystal Wars" in 850. These are mentioned in the Heartstone module, and I decided to write a history for them. The war was waged between elves, local kobolds, human settlers and a renegade wizard. The Heartstone was born during the conflict and Ghyr was founded by using its powers. - I placed Henadin's battle against Landryn Teriak in 970.
