First of all: "Feliz Natal e um Ano Novo de muita Alegria, Amor e Paz!!!" ("Merry Christmas and a New Year full of Happines, Love and Peace!!!") ---------------------------------------------- Dear friends, I was talking to Max (ex-Queens Solar Car Team) about Christmas and found some differences betweeen Canadian and Brazilian ones. Hence, I decided to share some details about one of the ways the Brazilians live this fantastic time of the year (I say "one of the ways" because the country is huge and was formed by so many cultures that many others exist, but mainly adding - and substituting - to this one). We do have pines here, we do not cut them for X-mas trees: we use plastic trees instead. We do have the coloured lmaps and balls. We do use some nuts (many kinds of dry stuff, not only "nuts"), but here comes something peculiar about our X-mas: FRUITS. Lots of suculent, sweet, beautiful fruits. We do not have chimneys but we also use good old Coke (Coca-Cola) Santa Claus (stilished Saint Nicholas). It is Summer here, so there is no cold (and it only snows in a couple of Brazilian cities), but lots of high temperatures. People use light clothing and drink a lot of juices and sodas. Some will even swim at night. For New Year's eve, people use white clothes and have many different rituals of good fortune for the next year. If you also would like to share something interesting about your Christmas, I'd love to hear it. Love and Peace, Vini ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Dec 2005 16:26:48 +0000 From: wombat Subject: Re: Christmas and New Year (off-topic, but hey, come on!) --- "Vinicius R. de Moraes - USP Solar" wrote: > It is Summer here, so there is no cold (and it only snows in a couple of Brazilian cities), but lots of high temperatures. It's winter here. Halifax, Nova Scotia. Or at least it was this morning. Snow, -3 C. I think it was spring this afternoon. Fog, +5 C. My Chinese Buddhist parents-in-law, my-as-yet-to-be-determined 2 year old daughter, and my agnostic wife and I we shopping for Chinese New Year accoutrements at a local Asian grocery. Then went to a mall and my daughter laughed at the robot gnomes at the Santa display. I wasn't going to teach her about Santa but while I was at work my wife took her to the mall and had her visit Old Man Odin... ah, whatever.=20 ;) A couple weeks ago we all decorated the tree together.
