I'm working on adapting WOTC's Eberron calendar to Mystara. It's early days yet but it looks ok. Should I bother with phases of the moon for Patera as it's invisble? Regards, Gary ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 16:58:24 +0100 From: Morten Greis Subject: Changes in the calendars Hallo everyone Recently when going through the Glantri Gazetteer and The Poor Wizards I noticed something had changed. The calendar in the Gazette states that the new begins on the first of Nuwmont and that also spring begins at this time of year. In the Almanac the year also begins on the first of Nuwmont, but spring now begins on the first of Thaumont. When did this change in the Mystaran material happen? It personally annoys me a bit, I liked the idea of the year beginning on the first day of spring instead of the parallel to the Western calendar. By the way, what language are the names of the months supposed to be coming from - several of the names seems to have simple relations to english words (Nuwmont = Newmonth; Kaldmont = coldmonth; Klar = clear?; Swift = 'swift winds' - storm season; ), others seem somewhat harder to guess. What does the names of the months mean? The same goes for the names of the weekdays, besides lunadian and soladain, what do they mean? For now, Morten Greis ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 18:19:41 +0100 From: Giampaolo Agosta Subject: Re: Changes in the calendars Morten Greis wrote: > > By the way, what language are the names of the months supposed to be coming > from - several of the names seems to have simple relations to english words > (Nuwmont = Newmonth; Kaldmont = coldmonth; Klar = clear?; Swift = 'swift > winds' - storm season; ), others seem somewhat harder to guess. Not really sure on the first question, but the months seem quite easy: Nuwmont -> New-month Vatermont -> Water-month Thaumount -> Thaw-month (beginning of spring) Flaurmont -> Flower-month Yarthmont -> Earth-month Klarmont -> Clear-month Felmont -> ? Fyrmont -> Fire-month Ambyrmont -> Amber-month (leaves get amber-coloured?) Sviftmont -> Swift-month Eirmont -> Air-month Kaldmont -> Cold-month The days seem more difficult. As far as I can tell they do not seem to be based on English words. Apart from Lunadain and Soladain, Nytdain seems to refer to the Immortal Nyt (Nyx). -- Giampaolo Agosta http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 12:05:51 -0800 From: Brendan Corliss Subject: Re: Changes in the calendars --- Morten Greis wrote: > When did this change in the Mystaran material > happen? In GAZ1, which I believe established the Mystara calendar as we know it, Nuwmont 1st is the beginning of the year and Thaumont 1st is the beginning of Spring. I have never noticed the 1st day of Spring coinciding with the 1st day of the year in any other product. > > By the way, what language are the names of the > months supposed to be coming > from - several of the names seems to have simple > relations to english words > (Nuwmont = Newmonth; Kaldmont = coldmonth; Klar = > clear?; Swift = 'swift > winds' - storm season; ), others seem somewhat > harder to guess. My guess is that the Month names are more or less Old English or Low German in origin. They definitely have a Germanic sound about them... certainly familiar to anyone who speaks a Germanic language (German, Dutch, English, the Scandanavian languages, etc). In game context, I would probably say they are Antalian in origin. Not sure on the days, though. -Damon aka Brendan Corliss Corliss Enterprises, Ltd. I think Damon is right about the real-world influence--it kind of reminds me of Africaans--almost English-like, but not quite...
In-game, however, I think it was a deliberate befubbling of English to simulate pseudo-Roman Thyatian; reverence the name of the Specularum/Miros City Guard in Karameikos--the Guard Phorsis, pronounced "forces"...

In Gaz 1, the first of Spring was 1 Thoumont... Gaz 3 introduced the Spring-Nuwmont version of the calendar, with the equinox being 2 Nuwmont...

On the question of Felmont, I can think of 2 things...
1--in the Thoumont calendar, it may be "Fell Month", based on the Karameikian holiday on 1 Felmont, "Beast's Day" when King Halav and the beast man fell on each other's spears--a day of celebration with both real and mock hunting of all kinds of beasts...

The second possibility is "Fall Month" using the Nuwmont calendar, as that makes it the first day of Autumn...

On the topic of the days of the week, I'll have to think about that a little more, but I asume they were chosen/designed using the same method/reasoning that the months were...

Until next time,
Roger
