That area is basically a Taiga region. The Great Bay freezes completely every five years or so. Does this fit with Karawenn's description? > Comments? Interesting? Useless? I'm generally quite wary of generic fantasy additions from other worlds (e.g., Thunder Rift) -- I don't see the need to set them in Mystara (that is, in the planet -- in Mystaraspace there's plenty of space). In this case, the names and the overview don't seem to leave many options for this region -- maybe setting it in the past (Blackmoorian Age) or on another planet (Damocles, probably) could be easier. The novel so far (im only half way through the first one) doesnt go much into details of the climate, though one gets the impression of a typical fantasy climate rather than an arctic one. Most mentioned settlements are some distance from the coastline though. Perhaps the somewhat milder climate can be explained by the elven forest just to the northeast? Draken (http://pandius.com/draken3.html) also does not seem to be suffering too much from the cold temperature there. > > Comments? Interesting? Well, the arguments for setting Karawenn in Mystara so far are: 1)Most of the other First Quest books were specifically set in Mystara. 2) Although not specifically set in Mystara, the novel seems to be written with Mystara in mind, given the constant references to Immortals, Spheres, Entropy, Nightshades as well as other Classic D&D elements. My own attitude to these things is that everything Classic D&D belongs to Mystara. Placing certain creatures/countries/races to other planets/planes is possible, but it makes them less accessible/useful to most GMs. In order to make them as useful and accessible as possible, I try to place them as close to the Known World as possible, since that is where most campaigns are set. It's a nice idea for a sort of "trekkie" campaign (other than the usual Princess Ark). My only "objection" to this idea is that it places the Spillworld outside the Solar System. The world could easily be much closer, making it actually somewhat realistic that a Mystaran expedition could reach the place, and actually colonize it. MMArs or MVenus should be colonized before something beyond the Solar system IMO. > However, with Alphatia gone (or almost gone) I > suppose the exploration > force should be Thyatian/Hattian or > Thyatian/Myoshiman :P I assume you mean Heldannic when you say Hattian? In any case a joined alliance between these two, perhaps also including the Myoshimans would be very interesting! Perhaps with the help of the Gnomes of Serraine? Well, one could say that it should be Draken's author to tell why the climate is so mild there :) > My own attitude to these things is that everything > Classic D&D belongs to Mystara. I know. I just see these issues from a quite different point of view -- there's no need of replicas of the same basic idea (the generic fantasy home village/home kingdom). As to accessibility, that's really more a matter of whether one wants to use a given region or not. For a campaign based in Karameikos, northern Norwold is not exactly accessible unless the PCs are willing to make a long sea journey followed by a long journey by foot (no one would bring them north of Alpha anyway). OTOH, another world might be easily accessible through a magical gate of some kind. So distances are really not so relevant IMO.
