Because the contributors' works were copyrighted, everyone's permission is be required before the Tome could be made available once more. There was a lot of good work published over the course of the Tome's brief life - it would be a shame if it were not available to the wider community. This message has also been posted to the MMB and Dragonsfoot. Pascale Jr." Subject: Half-Orcs in Glantri Hi All: In a few weeks I'll be starting a "new" campaign. We're going to have a small group begin in Glantri, as I attempt to convert Mystara to 3E rules. So far it seems pretty simple and straight-forward. I'm also going back in the past so to speak and placing the campaign in the year 1000 AC, during the time of the Gazetteers. Things have been going smoothly as I start collecting games, ideas, etc. However, we have just started creating characters and one of my players wants to play a Half-Orc. My question is, how does this race fit in within Glantri? At this time, halfling and dwarves are captured and killed, or experimented on. Do half-orcs receive the same treatment? Or would the wizards look upon them as nothing more than inferior scum? The Half-Orc in question is a friend of a fellow character, who happens to be a wizard. Would that give the Half-Orc a small edge? Or would I have to have the wizard get a "license" and pretend the Half-Orc is some sort of pet? I guess what I am asking is if this race is just as hunted as the other demi-humans or treated different coming from a more "monsterous" stock? ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2006 12:23:20 -0700 From: Stone Marshall Subject: Re: Half-Orcs in Glantri Well, in my opinion, a half-orc in Glantri in the year 1000 would be treated with fear and anger. Now 20 years later with the inclusion of Kol and other humanoids and lycanthropes it would be different. I would say that the player of the half-orc would have to be a role model for humanoid acceptance in the future of Glantri. Multizar the Mage "Dennis A. After all, the one "real" half-orc in Mystara canon- Angus McClintock (Gaz10)- was able to become a powerful wizard in Glantri, but was constantly mistreated all the same due to his obvious deformities. I don't think half-orcs would be quite as poorly regarded as dwarves and halflings- both for reasons of history (dwarves were seen as plague-bringers, for instance), as well as just general racism; dwarves and halflings are both obviously non-humans, while half-orcs (again, depending on the degree of orcishness in them) still may resemble humans and have human heritage, despite their physical deformities. They certainly would be considered second or third-class citizens, but a rank above dwarves and halflings. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2006 22:05:56 +0200 From: Giampaolo Agosta Subject: Re: Half-Orcs in Glantri On 28/08/06, Andrew Theisen wrote: > I don't think half-orcs would be quite as poorly regarded as dwarves and halflings- both for reasons of history Also, much depends on the social level of the human parents -- it's likely that Angus, given his background as the heir of a noble family, was given more respect and better opportunities than the average orc or half-orc. Orcs and other goblinoids (notably bugbears) are usually kept as slaves by certain Glantrian factions (e.g., the Caurenzan use them as gladiators, and the Unseen Hand keeps two orcs chained to the front door of its headquarters, IIRC). OTOH, goblinoids who can boast some connections (to one of the Broken Lands rulers, e.g.) can and do mix with the Glantrian society (think of the goblin "princes" in the Nightwail/Nightrage/Nightstorm trilogy). Except that Angus' heritage is unknown to everyone except his mother, the ghost Myra McDuff. He is probably given more respect due to his obvious magical ability, however- although maybe not much more. > OTOH, goblinoids who can boast some connections (to one of the Broken >Lands rulers, e.g.) can and do mix with the Glantrian society (think of the goblin >"princes" in the Nightwail/Nightrage/Nightstorm trilogy). I'd forgotten about that, but that's a good point. I wonder if their connection to Queen Yazar (who boasts some small magical skill) makes them more highly regarded than other "noble" progeny there, or if it is simply a matter of an attempt at political relations. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2006 23:27:30 -0300 From: "Vinicius R. de Moraes" Subject: Re: Tome of Mystara Very good, Geoff!!!!
