I am about to take up the role of DM once more and I'm looking at Mystara as the likely setting of the campaign. That said I was wondering how others have used or dealt with the inclusion of the Sorcerer class from the D&D 3.0 or 3.5 games. I'm wondering how you've included this class (if you have) into the history and feel of the campaign. Have you back-storied their existence to include them in nations such as Glantri or Alphatia, or have you approached their presence as something new in the world (perhaps related to the Day of Dread or something similar)? >> From my standpoint when I think of sorcerers in Mystara I immediately think of Hule. I envision that nation (or that entire region) to be thick with sorcerers. I don't like the D&D sorceror because it has nothing to do with historical sorcerors. I mean even LESS than the bard and paladin classes. That being said I'll also say that I don't muck with D&D rules. I play them as is and keep a set of house rules based on a totally different FRPG for things that I want to feel more historical. If I were to run a D&D game then I _would_ indeed back-story/retcon the existence of sorcerors. Probably making them a lot more common in Alphatia and making a lot of elven fighter-wizard types into ranger-sorcerors. Atruaghin and Ethengari would have more sorcerers than wizards, while "civilized" nations would be reversed. Partially civilized nations like the Northern Reaches and Sind would have an equal mix of both. As spellcasters, they would still be noble in Alphatia, but not in Glantri, as they are not educated. As far as retconning them in, I see no need, as the average person is not a spellcaster and wouldn't know the difference if it bit them in the face. History may tell a sory of a "great wizard" centuries ago, but it was really a sorcerer... the non-spell-casting historian just didn't know the difference. The DoD/WotI side-effect is an interesting idea, however. One which would make a great deal of sense if you were swapping games in the middle of a campaign, but since you're starting a new camp, there's no need... // SIGNED // Roger LV Girtman, II rogergirtman2@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.com/gawain_viii/ ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Sep 2006 00:25:16 EDT From: Erol Bayburt Subject: Re: Sorcerers in Mystara In a message dated 9/8/2006 7:30:10 PM Central Daylight Time, BobStarOne@AOL.COM writes: > That said I was wondering how others have used or dealt with the inclusion > of the Sorcerer class from the D&D 3.0 or 3.5 games. I'm wondering how you've included this class (if you have) into the history and feel of the campaign. Have you back-storied their existence to include them in nations such as Glantri or Alphatia, or have you approached their presence as something new in the world (perhaps related to the Day of Dread or something similar)? In my "Broken World" campaign (which is admittedly an "Elseworlds Mystara" setting rather than straigh Mystara) I decided to drop sorcerers as a PC class, and make them a class for NPC races only - Orcs, goblins, dragons, and other "monster" races can be sorcerers, but not humans, elves, dwarves or halflings. I'm also working, off and on, on different NPC classes for the non-human races, particularly elves. Humans & halflings will have Commoner as the most common NPC class (with Commoner upgraded with +1 bonus feat every even level to keep it from being completely pathetic even compared to the other NPC classes). And the typical dwarven NPC will be a modified Expert (reduce skill pts from 6 to 5, add med & heavy armor proficiencies, shield, and 1 martial weapon). For NPC elves, I'm trying to work out either an Expert designed to be a spellcasting NPC class, or a bard downgraded to NPC-class status. I'll probably go with the latter. The "favored class" for PC elves in the Broken Worlds is bard, and I've made the bard a bit more marital, upgrading it in response to the general consensus that bards are perhaps the weakest PC class - I've given them d8 hit dice instead of d6, and exchanged whip proficiency for proficiency with bows & medium armor (& I allow them to cast in medium armor without "arcane spell failure") ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ End of MYSTARA-L Digest - 7 Sep 2006 to 8 Sep 2006 (#2006-150) **************************************************************
