This, in spite of the fact that there are clear differences between the 3E wizard and the M-U. IMO Wizards and Sorcerers are both 3E versions of the BECMI Magic-user. While most arcane spellcasters in Mystara are assumed to use spellbooks, there should be lots of room in our world for other kinds of wizards. In fact Hakomons and Wokani/Wiccas are excellent examples of other types of wizards. Sorcerers are distinguished by their natural affinity for arcane magic, which is belived to be connected to their blood somehow. Also, they do not require spellbooks to learn or memorize spells. Sorcerers are clearly fewer in numbers, at least in civlizised lands than Wizards are. OTOH, in the wilderness where arcane knowledge is hard to come by Sorcerers are often the only arcane casters available. Although not identical, using Sorcerers in the place of Hakomons or Athruagin M-Us is a good quick and dirty solution. Monster spellcasters are probably also more likely to be Sorcerers than Wizards. Those noted for magic being strong among their blood-lines in Alphatia and Glantri are probably also good candidates for being Sorceres. Elves is a tricky issue since there are so many contradictory sources on elves and magic. Druids or Rangers might be just as appropriate as Sorcerers. Most Belcadiz elves are probably Wizards though. IMC I keep their favored class as Wizards just to keep things simple.
