E-mail at work doesn't look as "recreational" when someone looks over your shoulder from the cubicle "door" as, say, pictures of dragons, monsters and a big ol' banner proclaiming D&D. ;) Which would be why I'm usually only on the MML. They are close enough, to this layman's ears/eyes, to be variants of the same thing in different languages. Look at our planet. What's the real name for it? Earth. Terra. Tellus. Telluria. Gaia. Aerda. La Terre. Ertha. Eraze. Erez. Eorde. Or some planet called ee-ahrth. Sure most of those are just various linguistic translations of the same thing but which one is the real one? We know that the people in the Known World call their world Mystara. Lovel= y name. Probably pretty old. Probably lots of variations amongst the languages. But does Mystara mean "the world", "dirt/ground", or is it the name of some anthropomorphized demiurge that animates the planet? Is it a combination of Mystical/Mystery + Terra/Tara. Just trying to muddy the waters. ;) On 06/04/06, Richard B. wrote: > > I got to thinking about this and, if we can give the > Hollow World an official proper name, then I would > have to cast my vote for "Zorandar", the name of Aaron > Allston's Lost World from his superb "Lands of > Mystery" supplement for the old Justice Inc. game. > > Incidentally, Lands of Mystery was a vastly more > successful attempt at presenting a Lost World setting > and is recommended to anyone gaming in the Hollow > World. I for one read all the posts here on the MML even though I normally don't post. I don't have internet access at work, yet ;) , and I find the format of the forums very easy to work with and more appealing. I know the MML has little periods of quietness but overall both places have significant enough traffic to justify each. As with Mystara itself, variety is a strength, since discussions can be done with both forum and email. Atvatabar was just a tip o' the hat to the first "hollow world", although I think it counts as more sci-fi than fantasy, but I digress... You bring up a very good point about the different names for the Bowels of Mystara and I think different names in different countries is a dandy idea. However, I think that the most used name should come from whichever nation is the most dominant and right off hand I don't know who that is. Later, R.
