We've always played OD&D in the way that "letting spells go through" is not an option. We consider saving throw to be a form of natural resistance. Of course one can voluntarily take away natural protections etc. But I can see why you prefer the other way. And oh yeah, I wouldn't make it easy for their "sticky bomb" to work, and they know it. I would of course require a chance roll every time for the contraption to work. That idea was more fooling around than serious planning. Too many beers at the gaming club fridge or something.
