Hey, no reason to get queasy about offering advice. That's the virtue of thi= s list, getting input from people. But yeah, perhaps I should have been more explicit about the situation =20 in the campaign. I'll give some shorthand notes: - Our campaign was started long ago (1988), and I didn't have access =20 to many Mystaran materials back then, only the GAZ line. So there =20 aren't any Heldannic Knights in our continuum. - Freiburg is fairly large city (20 000), but a lot of the population =20 is transient: sailors, traders, pirates, refugees etc. It is ruled by =20 a council of four: leader of Merchants' Guild, leader of pirates, =20 general of city guard and the high priest of Asterius. - There is a sizeable military contingent, but it doesn't have much =20 magical capabilities. (Our Mystara is slightly lower magic than =20 canon.) Still, normally it would be able to repel a significant =20 assault. For example, the Thyatians were planning to use a whole elite =20 legion supplemented with some magical forces and flying units. - But in the last few days the defences were hurt by local SAS =20 (Seaborne Alphatian Security) agents: they assassinated the leader of =20 pirates, the general, and seriously damaged the harbour defences. - The Thyatian invasion would have been a surprise attack, so it =20 hasn't caused any additional military mobilisation. Originally the =20 Thyatians were trying to forge an alliance with the city, but one of =20 the PCs foiled the attempt (he was working for the Alphatians) - About the Alphatian assault: I meant that the man-o-war is the only =20 flying unit, not the entire force of course. The Alphatians will =20 commit several thousand troops to the attack. The man-o-war is just an =20 addition to the fleet. It's an interesting situation. One of the PCs leads the Thieves' Guild =20 of Wendar & Heldann, and his HQ in under Freiburg. The Merchants' =20 Guild leader is his henchman. In the present crisis the PC is =20 practically leading the city. He managed to disrupt the local SAS =20 agents and learned that the invasion is coming in a couple of days. =20 The army is mobilising and the pirates have been sent to delay the =20 attack. In the meantime the PC is trying to contact his friends and allies and =20 rally enough troops either to fight the Alphers or force a diplomatic =20 solution. It could turn any way, a lot depends on the PCs.
