Anyway, I was just recommending GAZ5 (Alfheim) to someone on a forum and got to wondering whether anyone knows about availability of GOOD scans of GAZ supplements, preferably with OCR. I have them all in hard copy but some are falling apart and I'd love to be able to copy, paste, and edit sections. PDFs I know about for sale are supposedly cruddy and not searchable. Anyone know otherwise? Cheers, --Magus Coeruleus ---------------------- David S. At the time I had Joined a group to work on a Mystaran Database. Unfortunately my old pc died and I lost everything on it, I was wondering what is the status of this project. Has it been completed? As far as I can remember Thorfinn Tait was heading up the group. I don't have any URL's or E-mail addy's from my old machine, so this is my first port of call. Any help would be much appreciated. They could. But as the Thyatian Empire, like all nations in the D&D World, was made up to give people using the Dominion System as outlined in the D&D Companion set a place to do so, it makes NO SENSE for them to not use the ranking described in it, in which a Count definitely outranks a Baron. The last time I logged into the project site, a post I'd made a year or two ago checking on the status was the last thing there. I'll check the site again, but I'm pretty sure its still up, and what work we had going is still available. Mortus wrote: Hi Guys, As I said in a Previous mail I have been away for 2 years. In England, for example a Count was approximately equivalent to a German Duke (derived from the Latin Dux, for "warlord"). Also in Germany, they had Grand Dukes, while in eastern Europe they had an equivalent Archduke. The way D&D has dealt with this is to provide an arbitrary ranking system made up of the various European systems, sometimes twisting the original meanings for the sake of a singular (arguably simpler) system to be used Setting-wide. Regarding dominion size: although the D&D system has particular rules on how a PC would normally expand his dominion (and increase his title), this is not necessarily required of NPCs. Furmenglave, while small, is quite rich, and the Count rather powerful when compared to the significantly larger Barony of Bhrodur. On the topic of Arch/Grand Duchies... I have chosen to interpret this as a combination of the East and Western European traditions, therefore an Archduke rules a Grand Duchy. This territory is roughly equivalent to a normal Duchy, except the ruler is, in addition to being noble, a member of the Royal family. This was not uncommon in RW history. Royal family members, who were not in direct line or the throne were given a dominion, equal in strength to any other dominion, but a more grandiose title, to denote their elevated status as a royal. In the case of Karameikos, this breaks the rule for purely political reasons. He labels his nation Grand Duchy to indicate to potential enemies a connection to Thyatis, while at the same time indicating superiority or nation-status to other non-autonomous Duchies. Stefan chose not to take the title of Archduke, normally held by Grand Duchies, to prevent accusations of royal pretenders, which could threaten the Thyatian Royal/Imperial family's sovereignty. I hope this is all clear enough. I rally am just rambling off thoughts and ideas here. But isn't that rule for establishing a dominion in free (unclaimed) wildern= ess areas, not for a feudal subdivision within an already established count= ry like Thyatis? Being familiar with the Birthright example this is much what I was wonderin= g about since, asides from Kendach and Caerdwicca (and perhaps arguably the= case of the County of Halathius), all the Thyatian Baronies seem more powe= rful/influential/prosperous and larger than the Counties (as long as you do= n't consider the Karameikan Barons, which I don't view as 'Imperial' Barons= anyway). However, I don't particularily want nor desire for any Mystaran = culture to follow the odd Birthright example. Greg "Gecko" Weatherup --=20 Want an e-mail address like mine?
