Or at least on my end it was largely garbled. I als= o see some things I omitted from my usual format or just some key concepts = I left out or typos that changed meanings. I also realise now that I contr= adicted my earlier statment in the Karameikos entry that there should still= be a tie between the Callarii and Alfheim systems, and I'm not sure which = version I like better. Should I keep a connection between the two (like in= my Karameikos entry) or have like I put it in this entry? Let me try this again- Alfheim numismatics: Design thoughts/notes: One idea I had was that perhaps the elves disdain co= pper and use something else, but what? Perhaps Tin found near Dolos (see th= e Geology of the Known World articles at the vaults) or some sort of quartz= from the east part of Alfheim? I decided to incorporate both of these. I a= lso could use a better idea for the name of these denominations. General Notes: The elves do not have much need for a monetary system amongs= t themselves, barter is much more common, but they do have a few coins. Piaster: Alfheim and Darokin have a currency union in respect to the Gold P= iaster (40sp) which is produced by both countries, based on an older daroki= nian design. It is sometimes refered to as a friendship coin by the elves a= nd was originally slated to be called an "Eastwind" but the "Piaster" name = has become widespread in both countries. Traditional system: The Traditional elven system is based on the Silver Ten= 'er of 10 Tin ___ (name? perhaps "er"). While the "er" is often irregular i= n size and/or weight the Silver Ten'er is often precise and is usually high= ly polished and reflective in a stunning contrast to the 'average' looking = silver coins of the new system. The "er" coins are very thin, such that the= y are unifacial (struck on only one side) and they make pleasing sounding w= indchimes if strung together. Most of the tin comes from the placer deposit= mine near Dolos. There was originally a relationship between the Ten'er an= d a unit of account similar to the Callarii Silver Schilling (note- it was = never an actual coin, only a unit of account), but after centuries of econo= mic integration and cooperation with Darokin, any such connection or relati= onship is long since lost to history (and the Callarii unit of account has = also since drifted away from its original value, making any historic connec= tion very hard to identify). Both the "er" and Ten'er have very low relief= , the "er" because of their very thin unifacial design, and the Ten'er to a= ccomadate the polishing process. The "er" are very lightly impressed (hamm= ered) with a pattern of dots in a psudo-geometric pattern but done carefull= y and lightly so as not to puncture or bend the thin plates and so as to av= oid sharp edges on the reverse. Such a design usually quickly wears down a= nd on coins as old as only a year or so the design is often hard to see wit= h the naked eye, though the faint pattern can usually still be felt with th= e fingertips or you can tell it has been worked by looking at the coin edge= on. Some outsiders (humans) speculate that this pattern of indentations a= mplifies the accustics of these plates when strung up as windchimes. The d= esign on the Ten'er is usually hard to see duo to a) the highly reflective = nature of the coin's surface and b) The polishing process wears down a lot = of the design in the first place. The finished coins feel and look like th= ey have a slight resin-like coating. It is said, that with great practice = and patience, if you can manage to hold the coin at just the precisely corr= ect angle to the light the optics are such that then and only then is the c= alligraphic design on the coin illuminated as if by magic (whether it is ma= gic, or simply optics, the elves never say, they just smile and wink). Few= can hold the positioning right long enough {in ever changing light conditi= ons such as sunlight or flickering candlelight} to decipher the inscription= (which is actually rather bland), usually only a quick flash or flicker of= the design can be seen. The few elves (and very rare human) who have lear= ned this trick like to entertain children with it (perhaps the Mystaran equ= ivalent of pulling a quarter from a kids ear?) Small change: Below the "er" the elves use bits of polished quartz in a sma= ll change system that the humans can never make sense of because they can n= ever tell why this bit of quartz is worth more than that similar looking on= e. This evolved from an earlier marker system to indicate favours and debts= owed between individuals or groups, but is now simply a "remainder value system" (RW inspiration: in some countries shopkeepers will give bits= of candy as small change instead of stocking nearly worthless small denomi= nation coins). Much of the quartz for this comes from alluvial placer depos= its washed from veins in the eastern hills. This system of small change is = seen as 'quaint' and even archaic by elves who have traveled more widely (i= e adventurers). Particularily confounding to humans is the elven habit to = simply dump excess of these quartz bits on the ground if an elf accumulates= too many of them (elves travel light plus have little need for material po= ssetions and even less need for "money" so they'll only hold on to a handfu= l of these pieces at a time) and if an elf finds that s/he is short and in = need of a piece for change they think nothing of salvaging a piece or two f= rom this discardings of others (RW Inspiration: Take a Penny/Leave a Penny = containers on lots of merchant counters) or even sometimes a pretty pebble = can take it's place, all of which confound human merchants and drive them c= razy (especially when they are the recepient of these "bits of rock") Tendrius agreement system: Following the Tendrius agreement Alfheim now als= o has the Gold leaf set at half a Piaster. The Gold leaf consists of 10 Sil= ver Petals or 20 Silver Seeds and all three are produced in Alfheim town wh= ere the mint is run mostly by non-elves. While there is nothing wrong with = the silver petals and seeds produced by the Alfheim town mint -in fact they= are always precise and accurate- they never seem to be as impressive as th= e Ten'er coins for some reason. Perhaps it is in part because the inscripti= on is rather bland, simply a statment of the coin's value and the leaf mint= mark for the Alfheim town mint on one side and a depiction of a tree on th= e other. Darokinian merchants have complete faith in this newer system, an= d most other merchants have faith at least in the Gold Leaf.=20=20 Foreign usage: Alfheimer currency is rarely encountered outside of Alfheim = (and even within Alfheim barter is preferred). Some border settlements wil= l recognize and occasionaly accept small amounts of the Petals and Seeds, a= nd Darokinian merchants who routinely trade in Alfheim might keep a small a= mount of Alfheim coins on hand for their next trip to Alfheim town. Foreign circulation: In Alfheim Town one can easily get by with Darokinian = currency. Summation: Denomination Value Weight Notes small quartz pieces as small change Tin =93er=94 1.5cp ? thin, unifacial, make good windchimes Silver Ten=92er 1.5sp 40/lb Traditional coinage Silver Seed 1sp 60/lb Tendrius system Silver Petal 2sp 30/lb Large coin, Tendrius system=09 Gold Leaf 20sp 60/lb Tendrius system Gold Piaster 40sp 30/lb Large coin, common with Darokin Traditional System: 1 Ten'er equals 10 "er" (ideals for a better name welco= med). Newer Tendrius inspired system: 1 Leaf equals 10 Petals or 20 Seeds or half= of a Piaster. Thus, a Ten'er is three-fourths of a Petal or a Seed is two thirds of a Ten= 'er. Historical coins: The Tendrius system coins (Leaf, Petal, Seed) and the Pi= aster are all rather new. The traditional coins haven't really changed (in= terms of design, but not in terms of value) since the elves settled the ar= ea. Perhaps "er" coins that are very heavily worn (more so than usual) suc= h that they are broken, bent, or have a hole (either because they have been= pierced or nicked, or simply because the middle wore away from usage). Pe= rhaps historical coins from neighboring Darokin could be found or from befo= re the Canolbarth could be found in non-elvish ruins or treasure hordes. Dear friends. I'm glad to have you guys back here - for a while, at least. I don't read the Piazza. I'd love to, but I cannot. Well, as for my question: what kind of adventure do you people see as fit for a evangelism-oriented game to be played in a convention? (Darkblood, Atila, will it be a 4-hour game on Sunday morning?) By "evangelism" I mean I hope I will introduce 4 people to Mystara, make them love the setting etc. By "what kind of adventure" I mean: - what level? - what pace? Fast and furious, hack-and-slash? Or more talkative? Lots of travelling? Or yet something else? - what place? What Kingdom, size of city (if any) etc. Making a long story short: how can give a taste of how wonderful Mystara is in only 4 hours to perfect strangers to me? Input is highly appreciated.
