Construction of Thyatian Names Typical Thyatian names are comprised of a first name, and optional middle name, and a family name. The family name represents the first name of the father, and the middle name is the name of one of the grandparents. Thus a given name of Ioannes Doukas Laskaris would mean that the father of Ioannes is called Laskaris. Also, one of his grandparents or great grandparents was a Doukai. Campaigning persons might forge a name for themselves such as Ioannes Laskaris ho Pontikoctonous (the Rat Slayer). If his exploits are well known, he can abbreviate his name to simply Ioannes Pontikoctonous. And if his exploits were of legendary proportions, his name can be Pontikoctonous. The woman's names have simliar construction except that all the names would be feminized. A typical feminine name would be Maria Angelina Palaiologina. If Maria married, she adopts the family name of her spouse. She might retain a middle name of her family name, grandparents name, or spouses grandparents name, depending on whichever is more famous. As an example, if Maria married Ioannes in the above example, her name could be Maria Laskarina, Maria Palaiologina Laskarina, Maria Angelina Laskarina, or Maria Doukaina Lasarina.
