While I personally have not bought an e-reader, I do work at a bookstore that sells and markets the Sony ones (Borders). Before you consider investing in any of them, you should consider the following. First off, e-readers use a special kind of display that mimics actual book text under sunlight, and because of that it makes switching and loading new pages annoyingly slow. Secondly, all of the major brands come loaded with an incredibly intrusive DRM system that severely inhibits reading books from multiple sources (ie an ebook from Amazon if you have a Sony model and vise versa with a Kindle). And thirdly e-readers are primarily designed to read specialized ebook formats, not pdf files. While some of the newer models do have pdf support, from what most customers have told me it's an incredibly annoying and slow process thats not worth the time and energy. My advice to you would be the same that I tell inquiring customers: it's a new technology that still has a lot of bugs, and while it is rapidly improving it is still very limited in what it can do, and I would suggest you wait a few more years before investing unless you know for fact that you can get your monies worth out of it.
