Without e-ink technology, it's really not that different from a standard netbook or even a handheld with a sufficiently large display. The major benefits of e-book readers lie in longer battery life and high readability in full sunlight. Primary drawbacks are cost (at least for now) and the fact that e-ink only comes in grayscale -- many D&D PDFs have color background that would result in reduced readability. Also, I suspect that PDFs obtained from scanning (like most PDFs of older D&D books -- like those for Mystara) will not work too well compared to vectorial stuff. Compatibility with specific formats and DRM should not be much of an issue outside the models sold by major companies (Amazon, Sony and the like) -- one of my coworkers has an e-ink, Linux-based e-book reader, and doesn't seem to have any problems with DRM.
