Maybe having a pile of gold & gems will reduce the amount of food that a monster needs to eat in order to survive. However, the gold-magic doesn't keep the monsters from growing hungry... and in fact has the side-effect of making them crave *human flesh* to satisfy their hunger. Erol K. The Caves of Chaos are set up as a potential humanoid trade market as much as it is an adventure location and/or battleground site between different sides. The B2 module mentions the potential for humanoid warfare, but if you keep it as an interactive community than you can have the humanoids trading with each other...and gold coins are good for that. The ogre takes gold payment from the goblins as an enforcer, he can turn around and pay the kobolds for digging a pit trap in his lair to better defend it, or the gnolls for supplying him with deer meat when he gets tired of bear meat :) Dave On Wed, Apr 6, 2011 at 12:54 PM, Erol K. Two thoughts on having the Caves of Chaos near to, and friendly with, the Black Eagle Barony: - First, this could make things quite a bit more dangerous for unsubtle PCs and hack-and-slash players. If the goblinoids of the Caves decide that a group of invading adventurers is too tough to take out on their own, they might just be able to get special weapons, advice, and even mercenary/magical support from the Black Eagle! Something to think about - and to maybe spend a bit of time thinking about how goblinoids might initially use *and bungle* this support, just to clue the PCs in to the fact that this isn't Just Another Goblin Lair (tm). - Second is the flipside of this - if the denizens of the Caves are trading with the Black Eagle, this means there's a trail leading southwards that the PCs might be able to scout for trap and ambush sites. If they're clever and quick, they can wait until Chief Big-Toes' best lieutenant has left the lair with half the tribe's loot, six guards and a mule to buy weapons, and hit the sap in the open. (If they're *really* clever, they can pin the deed on a rival tribe or on Black Eagle mercenaries, and make it a lot less likely that anyone else goes asking the Black Eagle for help against those pesky adventurers.) This does mean figuring out where the southbound trail is in the vicinity of the Caves, and where a fight is likely to take place if the PCs set an ambush.
