I am giving 4.5e a chance, as I'm playing in it, but they gave me a slayer, which seems like a fighter without powers. I'm unfamiliar and overwhelmed, because I did painstaking research in PH1/PH2/PH3 to make up my character, only to be given a pre-gen of slayer that I know nothing about. Anyhow, today, I have the two essential essentials books, and I will get up to speed on it. The thing that is slightly frustrating, is that you have numerous rule books, then they make essentials. Essentials in concept ("making it easier") sounds nice, but it adds more material and rules, from a different branch other than the previous system (PHB1, PHB2, PHB3, etc.). Additionally, it other classes (primal types and pscion types) are apart of the new Essentials family, which orphans something like DarkSun campaign. As a new player to DnD4e, I'm lost at where to start, Essentials, previous stuff, stuff before. It's overwhelming, even though the marketing says otherwise. If you get the Character Builder, this is helps immensely. Anyhow, I'm not really upset or anything; I'm just making an observation. I have the other books, and I'm excited to explore further. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.pandius.com To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2011 00:18:28 +0200 From: Giampaolo Agosta Subject: Re: Could Get in 4e game... Well, the Slayer is probably the simplest character class to play in 4e -- it's a striker with strong defenses and hp, like the core Barbarian class, which makes it less reliant on tactics and maneuvering than other characters. It has less powers, but makes up with a good damage output. > > Additionally, it other classes (primal types and pscion types) are apart = of the new Essentials family, which orphans something like DarkSun campaign= . Well, there are three primal classes: Hunter, Scout and Sentinel, which more or less cover the same area as the Seeker, Ranger and Druid. The Barbarian concept is subsumed in the Slayer class, even though the Slayer is martial rather than primal. That leaves out the Shaman (which is indeed missing, but the Sentinel druid is characterized by an animal companion rather than by shapechanging, so it is midway between Shaman and Druid) and the Warden (which isn't that great a concept). Only the Psionic classes are not represented in Essentials. Anyway, Dark Sun is definitely more suited for core classes. I am still confused about 4e and 4.5e. The 4e followed a similar pattern (3 at-will powers, 1 encounter power, 1 daily power), but essentials (4.5e) eliminated those for Fighter/Slayer and Fighter/Knight. So I'm a little confused. I started to understand why I had some other confusion after I read some complaints regarding the current setting: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/28217361/Pet_Peeves Nevertheless, I am thinking that maybe picking and choosing some select class/race/power combinations, one can create an underground Mystara 4e, that can pull the various rules into one source. We could start off with the basics, and expand it later, or add material that was in 3e. For DnD0e classes of Elf and Halfling, we might have to create a custom class, or allow for hybrid Fighter/Thief, Fighter/Mage, or a class that is similar in design, combining aspects of classes. This could prove interesting. It would be a major project. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 22:29:05 -0500 From: Eric Anondson Subject: Re: Who Plays/Tried 4e? That "similar pattern" was a turn off for more than a few. The change is one I am grateful for.
