Sure! :-) I don't think that all sages must be wizards/spellcasters, per se. I don't even think that they need to /pretend/ to be such. A 'sage' (to my mind) is just someone who is very knowlegable about stuff. However, in the 'Real World' a sage was usually very knowlegable only about ONE specific topic, and much less knowlegable about other things -- they would spend all their time learning as much as possible about the thing that interested them in favour of knowing much of anything at all about other things. Aside from needing a temperment that lended itself to some kind of research - -- book learning, lab experimentation, field research, whatever), any sort of individual could eventually become seen as a sage. Of course, Spellcasters are seen to excell in the area of being 'sages', mainly because they can suppliment their reasearched knowledge with spells that let them find out about stuff that they otherwise wouldn't know. But even then, a Spellcasting sage might still have more information available about a particular area of knowlege -- probably often related to magical research, but not necessarily. I don't think I'd use a 'thief' as a sage type myself, because I don't, personally, think of thieves as the 'researching' type. They may obtain a lot of information, but it is usually of a 'sensitive' nature (for lack of a better term). What I would call a thief who sold his or her knowlege to others would be an 'informant' ;-). I'm more inclined to use 'normal' humans, who have never really been adventurers but have spent time studing a particular branch of knowledge or phenomenon. I /might/ consider using a lapsed adventurer (of any class) who happened to have a passion for something regularly encountered on his or her travels, and kept notes and did other outside research about it later, but that would be less likely (in my case). I'd also be interested in hearing what other opinions people have on this topic, especially any specific NPC examples they might have ;-) Jenni - -=> strawberryJAMM <=- - -- Jenni A. M. I'm working from memory, so some things may be a bit screwy. "Sir" Thimmel, "The Prince of Theives" STR 9 INT 11 WIS 13 DEX 17 CON 9 CHA 15 Armour Class: 7 Hit Points: 3 Alignment: Chaotic (in a selfish, childish way) Height: 5'1" Weight: 98 lbs. Eyes: Brown Hair: Brown Skills: Palming (DEX), Begging (CHA, I think), Tall Tale Telling (CHA), Streetwise (WIS) New Skills: Tall Tale Telling (CHA): Character is able to spout off stories at length about his family, his homeland, almost anything. These stories are in no way true, but the character can make it sound very convincing. If the character using this skill fails 3 consecutive rolls when trying to convince another character of his truthfulness, this skill can no longer be used to convince the target of anything ever again. (Like the bow who cried wolf) Background / Persona: Thimmel looks like a 13 year old human, but surely doesn't act like one. He's haughty, He considers himself a "Prince of theives". And his Quick wit can be a real pain in the butt. He is a bit jaded from living and begging on the streets most of his life, and is always on the lookout for a group to get him out of his home city/town. If he finds people he likes, he hangs on to them like glue. Thimmel may be young, but he thinks fast on his feet, and is not a bad theif (his small size makes being sneaky very easy) However, he is loud, a bit obnoxious (He is only 13..) and a bona fide coward. If things get tough, Thimmel will more likely hide than fight. He is lovable though, a perfect brat that the party can't bear to live with or without. (Though you may want to smack him around a bit) Equipment: The clothes on his back, 25 cp, a half set of theives tools (Stolen), And a Dagger. He also collects keys (One of his tales, usually accompanied by teary eyes, is that his father has a large amount of gold at home, and if his assailants just takes this key, and leaves him be, they can get it. The key usually leads to the back door of the Marshal's station/house, or somewhere where capture is likely.) Have fun! Not many know of the Vortex. Only a few Immortals know, and i don't think any mortals have the slightest clue. The preaching from Gareth seems to be quite similar to the actions the Old Ones took against Ixion and how they feel about the Immortals as a whole. They showed Ixion how he's been misusing his powers and not acting as he should. This was before he banished Ixion away to think about his misdeeds. The Old Ones seem to think some Immortals are on power trips because they think there is nothing higher than themselves (slamming meteors into Mystara, forceing thier followers to battle to the death because of personal feelings between the two Immortals, and so on). Gareth, may very well be an old one here to give mortals a "higher-learning" of the world around them and to give Immortals a more clear sense of where they stand and what thier limits are. If the Old Ones did wish to inform the mortals and Immortals of this, I couldn't think of a better way than takeing the form of an Immortal......or a better time than right after "Wrath of the Immortals". - -Inconu *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 18:41:57 -0400 From: Daly Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Any More NPC's? Well, I don't really think so, especially since there is the whole Copyright issue. I was mainly thinking of creating our own list which contained different NPC's from those in the Gazetteers -- an creation of the MML and the MML alone (Well, and maybe the Mystara Message Board... If I remember to post my idea there...) While I do agree that a massive list containing every NPC from official(*) sources might be nice, it probably isn't really necessary. While not everyone has all the Gazetteers (heck, I don't) I find that most DM's I play with use information on NPC's in the GAZ'es and Modules they own and otherwise try to invent stuff. It has NOTHING to do with the posts and the topics listed here, or anyone in particular. I receive the digest version of the MML at home, via AOL. My life at home allows me at best 15mn a day just to look at what comes through the MML. The digest format and lack of time there are basically the reasons why I often fail to respond on the MML. On the other hand, it's exceedingly easy for me to keep the Mystara message board loaded at work, allowing me to peek once in while, and fire off some responses. Lunch time comes in handy - thus the number of posts from me there. I also wanted to make sure Mystara had a decent representation right there, on TSR's door step, where everyone else can see it. I'm convinced this is important in supporting requests to relaunch Mystara eventually. I agree wholeheartedly that the I-Chat message board sucks terribly. Fortunately, it is only a temporary board. I understand that it is slated to be replaced with something more user-friendly (dunno when). This being said, I wanted to thank everyone for showing up on the message board. The more you do, the better Mystara will look. I don't think you need to worry about the fate of the MML. There is a large volume of exchange, here which I don't see disappearing. Besides, I think it's nice to have an area where people can discuss their views of Mystara away from TSR's direct scrutiny, should there ever be one comparable to the old AOL message boards. What I am inferring here is that few people if any at TSR know of the existence of the MML or monitor its contents. On the other hand, the Mystara message board "appears" more as the official, company-supported board (it's not really true, but it appears so I think). Now, about the Rakasta... My #1 pet peeve: I originally designed Bellayne as 100% English - sorry no Nippon-influence here. The Japanese Rakasta come Myoshima and nowhere else. At least that's the way the author of the original intended it and how it was presented in the Princess Ark. When SC was rewritten for AD&D, the developer ignored my suggestion to remove the Japanese material from Bellayne. The latter is the "official" version since it was published last. The rest is your choice. Personally, I think it's okay to assume the Myoshimans maintained contact and infiltrated the nomads, therefore explaining why they look more like the Myoshimans. Some of this may have transpired into Bellayne, especially in regards to odd oriental equipment that may be laying around there. But otherwise, I think Bellayne should retain its English character and Myoshima theirs. Okay? >>I am surprised at the lack of "talk" on the Rakasta article in Dragon. Myself, I found it a welcome addition. So much so that I was inspired to add a Rakasta clan to one of my Davania projects. Nice job Bruce. I have yet to check the game mechanics but I see few problems with the Rakasta layout. I do have one problem with an aspect of the article. That problem is based more on personal opinion and my own mental image of the Rakasta. I await a few more days before commenting furhter. Perhaps by then that problem will not seem such a big deal. << (Alex) Thanks! >>Havn't read it. But Bellayne always puzzled me. On the one side it's like Elizabethan England (Queen Catherine/Good Queen Bess), with things like the Company of the Sun and the Company of the Times, names like Sir Jasper Cockerfield, Theeds(Leeds?), Leminster(Westminster?) etc. etc. They even have the North/South divide... (coal mines Up North, rich fat cats(!) Down South)... Even the Bellaynish gold piece is called a Quid...<< (Rob) Indeed. It's Leominster (actually an American city nowadays). The pun died at the hands of merciless editing in the AD&D version. >>BTW - do you think that TSR drew they ideas for races on the Savage Coast from cartoons? You have the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (tortle fighting monks), Samurai Pizza Cats (rakasta) and Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds (lupins)...<< (Rob) No idea. I got the basic lupins and rakasta from Module X1. >>Huh? Umm, no. The Japanese Rakasta live up on the invisible moon, in Myoshima. Totally separate culture; the only time we visited Bellayne in the Princess Ark series, there were two Myoshiman rakasta present; Myojo, and the Myoshiman ambassador who tried to kill Myojo a couple of times. They got along a bit better at the end of the issue.<< That was my intent. >>I agree. Excellent stuff. Everyone should purchase their own copy. 200 of one particular "Mystara-content" issue being sold is likely to be noticed... << (Jeff Daly) Hey, that's a thought! :o) >>As for the lack of discussion, well those of us on the TSR message board have been discussing it extensively. Check out the boards and join us!<< (Jeff Daly) Sure! Good idea! >>Darn. I havent got that one late. I'm really starting to get annoyed with my gaming store owner. Now he is 4 issues behind in Dragon. Im considering subscribing, but I dont know if its worth it if Im not getting a Mystara article every month. (Bruce you have done that before...)<< (Håvard) Yes, but the magazine was interested in supporting these articles because they were the only ones dealing with basic D&D rules, and Mystara, which at the time were both live products. Plus, I was not a father back then! Please send letters or e-mail to Dragon and Dungeon magazine editors asking for more Mystara stuff. Go to the Dragon message board and talk about Mystara stuff. That ought to catch the editors' attention. >>Wouldn't it be more practical to move the message board discussion here? I mean, e-mail messages are easier (and cheaper and faster) to read and reply than message board ones. Just my opinion.<< (Fabrizio) Yes, but that would go totally unnoticed by TSR, as I explained earlier. >>How did the Bellaynish rakasta get to Patera? DO they have flying ships too?<< (Fabrizio?) Good question. Actually I posted an answer to this on the Mystara board. Please let me know what you think. Thanks! Gotta go -- Bye! Well, I was thinking that this could be a way to start up our own sort of oD&D/Mystara 'rogues gallery'. I think this would be neat and it would be fairly easy to create and maintain. We collect any NPC posted by list members, with some being very Mystara specific and specialized (like Geoff Gander's Shadow Elf, Tryllithyl), and some being more vague and generalized (i.e., A generic sort of inn-keeper, a street-urchin who is a good source of "underground" information, etc.). In any case, providing just enough information to make them interesting, but leaving a hook here and there to help a DM work them into a campaign, would be ideal. Then the results get stored somewhere specific and, as time goes on, any new NPC's shared with the MML are added to the list, and now everyone has quick access to a huge selection of NPC's for Mystara! Cool! All my NPCs are weird tho... Maybe when I can dig out the Folder of Doom (its midnight, give me a break!) I will inflict one upon the MML... (OOO...World-Shattering event...what IS he thinking? [it's my campaign]) AAnyway, could anyone tell me about the level of gunpowder tech in the Savage Coast? I need to know if they have Cannons, whether they are at arquebus, matchlock, wheelock or flintlock stage...etc. Well... the only weapons listed in the Red Steel book are wheelock pistols and arquebuses. However, in the novel "The Black Vessel" snaplock (snaphaunce) muskets and cannon are mentioned. IMC the most advanced weapons available are snaplock muskets and pistols, naval cannon and galloper guns (small cannon/heavy muskets). Cannon can fire either solid shot or loose shrapnel (early form of canister fire). Warships are at the 16th-17th century stage... after adapting the Spelljammer rules my Savage Coast has things like pinnaces, sloops, frigates and war galleons roaming around the place. Be warned - this stuff is powerful. I am reminded a green dragon IMC that unfortunately laired by a great river in Herath. The pinnace was sailed up the river, moored by the lair mouth, and a four cannon broadside trained on the entrance... Then the illusion spells were deployed to bait the dragon into leaving... and BOOM! dragonburgers. If you are going to introduce gunpowder to the KW - my advice is leave the SC at the wheelock and arquebus stage. That is MORE than enough. Cheerz ROB A worthy book on the subject (including stuff like neat rules for pikemen) is A Mighty Fortress... loads of stuff in there on gunpowder etc. etc. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 19:49:16 -0400 From: Trantor Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Forbidding Psionics, Eh? Now, in my opinion, that's *infinitely* more "evil" then someone who simply kills the other PCs when they're fighting monsters. You call that infinitely evil??? Selfish and arrogant.. sounds neutral. Evil is EVIL. The dark ichor that comes out of your nightmares. It's not what your character cares about, its what your character does. If I had or DM'd a character who could've evilly seized control of her family business but instead settled for stealing some money and running away, I'd move for an immediate alignment change to neutral (perhaps with evil tendencies.) The fact that she's snobby is not evil, its only uncouth. Manipulating others for personal gain isn't always evil, it can be good if doing so is for the mutual benefit. It could be selfish and neutral if its exploitive. It's evil in my opinion only if it explicitly profits herself and harms others in the process directly (not indirectly, i.e. benefiting herself and not being benefiting others fairly.) If she is evil, its not enough for herself to be better than everyone else. She must actively oppress others. Otherwise she is not truly evil but only neutral living off the coat-tails of others' evil. Do you DM evil monsters as only arrogant, snobby, and selfish? Heck, if I were a paladin I'd just walk on by. Those qualities don't oppose good in any way, they are merely a lack of good. Putting it aside for the moment Techie's example of a selfish neutral character.. what's unrealistic about killing major leaders? Sadat? Kennedy? Reagan? Archduke Ferdinand? Howabout cultural icons, Lennon? Christ? So, firstly, it's quite realistic. (Ok, Reagan didn't die from the assassination attempt, but it was scary and startling to millions of people; as were many of the other incidents.) That important people can be slain by an individual or small group is necessarily frightening to normal people; if the VIPs aren't safe, how safe are any of us? My DM considers that "evil enough" for a PC. As I stated in my previous E-Mail, she merely did not have an opportunity to kill her father/mother. If she had, then she wouldn't be adventuring right now. The fact that she fled from her household and family, and is now being hunted down by thousands of hired goons across the Known World, and that her picture is hanging in practically every major city in said Known World (Hey..Don't I know her from somewhere?) makes it *much* more interesting. Sure, my DM could have built a campaign around my character running a shipping/trade EMPIRE, but he didn't. He wanted a regular, dungeoning adventure. So, I had to accomodate. Also, who is to say my character is only "snobby and arrogant"? At first level a Lawful Evil character can attempt to manipulate things to fit her wants, but they will probably fail. In a previous adventure I managed to kill off a coterie of adventurers that happen to be in a same dungeon us as. I did it quietly, one at a time, in their sleep. They go to bed, they wake up missing their cleric. Go to bed, wake up missing their fighter, etc. One more thing, there are certain degrees of evil, you know. Being Lawful Evil does not mean I *have* to a vile, creature in the night. When my character becomes a Baroness at 9th level, she could be an oppressive, eye-for-an-eye ruler that kidnaps male babies to raise as her slaves. But currently, she has to worry about being caught by her family's virtual rent-an-army of mercenaries who wanna track her down and drag her back to Darokin. So, she's gonna go *along* with the flow. She'll tone down her "evilness" until she is powerful enough to get what she wants. You have to realize this, and please, do not critique my character without more information. I am sure you wouldn't want me to do the same with you. - - Technocrat *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 13:02:19 CEST From: "Herve Musseau" Subject: [MYSTARA] - Gareth 2 : Gareth = rad Hey, I'm glad that some people seem interested in the thread... Don't hesitate to toss your own ideas, and to contradict me when I'm wrong or when things could be handled differently. Oh BTW, I'm not trying to decide for anybody what solution they choose in their own campaign - I'm just presenting the pros and cons of each one and then just pick up whichever suits best your campaign. 2) Gareth = Rad It has been speculated several time that Rad might be Gareth, esp. between WotI and PWAs releases and MoA's release, because of one's disappearance in strange conditions and the other's appearance in as strange conditions. The fact that Ann Dupuis didn't consider this as a possibility is irrelevant to this discussion, though individual DMs may take this as a hint as to TSR's likely position. But as usual you may not care for TSR's official stuff if you think something different is cooler IYC. First off, this explains why no Immortals knows who Gareth is. No one is aware that Rad is back (or few), and even if (or when) they did, they hardly have a reason to suspect that Rad would maintain a second identity as Gareth. Especially since most Immortals remember Rad as his older self, and would have a hard time believing he's changed into a better fellow. Gareth being Rad works best in campaigns where MoA is played and the PCs do very well, and have Etienne return as an Immortal and better man. According to his new view on life, Etienne sets up a new faith as under another identity which promotes a new philosophy, while he's not very active as Etienne (only a few showings here and there, and not revealing completely that he's back) and not at all as Rad. He prefers to set up his new philosophy before everything else, as befits his new personality. Why did he start in Sind and not Glantri? Well, starting in Glantri is no easy task. Besides, his new message is universal, so he probably doesn't want it restricted to Glantri as did the old Rad. Now, he certainly has some fondness for Glantri, as shown by his interventions as Etienne here and there, and will probably comes back to it when his other schemes are running by themselves. The fact that Rad didn't reappear at the same time is likely due to the level loss he suffered when absorbed into the NoS. His reduced power doesn't let him conduct enough plots to have both Rad reappear and set up Gareth. He thus chose to give priority to Gareth. Besides, not having the two reappear at the same time prevents the other immortals from making the link bewteen him and Gareth. Why did Loki smile? Well, same reason as for Benekander, he hasn't a clue and is in fact grinning. Why did Gareth say he has returned from the Vortex? Well, maybe that's what Etienne believes happened. From MoA it appears this wouldn't be the case, but Etienne doesn't necessarily realize this. Besides, maybe he did in fact go beyond the Vortex, and the Old One later returned him so he could go through MoA. Or the Old One altered his memory (in addition to his personality) so that he would believe it. Maybe Rad believes he was right all along, was allowed for a moment among the Old Ones, but sent back to teach the immortals (and the mortals) what they should do on the Prime; however that can't be done if the immortals just use the mortals as paws, and the mortals should strive to become better; the NoS experiment was here to prove this but now he is probably convinced that this is only one way that was used by the Old Ones to show the proper way. As in case #1, the message was obviously aimed at the immortals and not the mortals, so that his philosophy would be heard by the immortals as well as by the mortals. Rad does know about Old Ones as he had a direct contact with one of them at the end of WotI, and he may have learned about the Vortex if you go by one of the theories presented above. The only real flaw in the Gareth = Rad equation is indeed time discrepency. Rad disappears in 1009, Gareth appears in 1011 (or 1010? I think it's 1011, with the Sitara's miracle being on Kaldmont 28, AC 1011), MoA takes place in Summer 1012. Prior to MoA, right after PWA2, this was actually the coolest theory, as it seemed to fit so well, but MoA both add to it (with the personality change, and the actual return od Rad) but also makes it impossible on a temporal level. Now, we all know that immortals can travel through time, so it is possible that Rad used chronomancy. Besides, if you go by my chronomancy in Mystara supplement (hint;), immortals don't have such problems as mortals do with doubling lifeline. And in TSR's (canon) supplement to chronomancy, the entry for Mystara does list Rad as one of those few immortals who actually probably knows something about chronomancy, as he's suspected (with Rafiel) of being the one who killed the Alphatians chronomancers who tried to meddle with ancient Blackmoor and the NoS of that time. Note that this means that he took the risk of being caught and thus his return discovered by the immortals of time who police the temporal prime. Note also that as his mortal identity of Etienne, he didn't appear before the end of MoA even though the temporal travel permits him to exist at an immortal level before his very return, but not because he cannot double the lifeline of his mortal identity probably rather because he doesn't want to arouse suspiscion. So, to sum up, an interesting possibility, but with a flaw (time) which individual DMs can get over by careful use of chronomancy. You may comment, of course. Next time, I'll examine the pros and cons of something entirely different and twisted, 3) Gareth = Loki. _____________________________________________________________ Herve Musseau Homepage: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Lair/8932/ Almanac page: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Lair/9037/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 May 1998 07:29:03 EDT From: Inconu Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Let's kill Stefan off >I kinda agree, though Techie's PC didn't kill his mother. Hmm. IMC its the reverse - the extra-Mystarans dont get psionics. In particular the Alphatians, because Old Alphatia was a plane with a very high level of magic. Magic and psionics are supposed to be opposites - they dont mix. I say IMC that the Alphatians and Flaems can never be psionicists, even if trained by one. The only psionics I have are wild talents as a result of the Red Curse (which dont function off the Savage Coast), a couple of Milenian philosopohers, and aranea. I justify the aranean thing with their "split personality" shapechanging abilities (which the Savage Coast aranea worked out themselves, with their own powers). However, I have decided to pose a question to you all, to help me sort something out IMC. I have just finishing running the HW adventure trilogy (Nightwail, Nightrage, Nightstorm) and have come up against a dilema. For those of you who haven't seen/read the adventure climax, here is quick summary: The PC's, after being given a small portion of Immortal power, get chased backwards through time by Thanatos himself. When they get there, they find all the rest of the Immortals who had been trapped in the past by an elaborate scheme by Thanatos. They confront Thanatos and he opens a portal to another dimension where even Immortal fear to go because their immortal power is removed and they are left with only their mortal skills (or something like that). The PC's are coerced into following him, because only there could they defeat him. However, the PCs are also given a time limit to defeat him, and as he still has the abilities of a 36th level mage, he managed to escape to his own realm, although damaged. My question is: How long, do you think, it would take for Thanatos to heal the damage inflicted upon him in that situation? (The adventure seems to imply that it would put him out of commision for a while IIRC) Cheers, Spyda. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 May 1998 09:04:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Glen Sprigg Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Gareth 2 : Gareth = rad At 01:02 PM 5/7/98 CEST, you wrote: >2) Gareth = Rad >It has been speculated several time that Rad might be Gareth, esp. between WotI and PWAs releases and MoA's release, because of one's disappearance in strange conditions and the other's appearance in as strange conditions. It only means that those who have the power don't realize it and those who do never use it for fear of retaliation and fear from others. 2) Alphatia is aware of psionics and maintains a secret ban on the power. The reason it is "secret" is because it rarely manifests on Mystara anyway. Mostly, they insure no "extra-Mystaran" beings come to Mystara and wreak havoc with psionics. 3) Eventually Alphatia will sink and the psionic creatures will invade. Countries will fall and burn like dry twigs. 4) A group of heros, led by an offworlder, will discover the latent abilities in some few people. These people often have an extremely slight greenish tint to the skin. The tint is so light as to manifest as a "paler skin" except upon close inspection. 5) The heroes rally the populace and repel the invaders. Possibly they will look for some ancient Blackmoor artifacts as well...headbands of willpower or something like that.... *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 May 1998 09:55:10 EDT From: BoBo II Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Forbidding Psionics, Eh? Anyway, if these skills could be linked to Psionics somehow, it would be a way of making psionics available in Mystara, allowing it to work outside of a particular area (which making it SC specific seems to do) and not doing any sort of ret-coning, since the 'psychic' abilities of the Seers of Yav is part of 'official' source material for Mystara. Major leaders would be frightning to the people because they would fear for the welfare of their country. I meant to say something along the lines of how players would fear this evil character more if they could see some reason as to why this is going on, or some connection to the crime. Random killings makes you see the killer as a rabid dog......and that's not what an evil character is. So a terrorist who blows up a noble in his carriage with a fire ball for the revolutionary cause of "liberating" his nation (to use D&D equivs of real-world events) is more frightening evil; especially if the people know the relationship to the cause (even though a hundred other terrorists may similar- ly claim responsibility).. than when somebody whacks a musician in front of his home with a copy of Catcher in the Rye in his backpack? I suppose reading a JD Salinger novel could be a reason if a twisted one.. but if a crook armed with a crossbow raids the corner bakery and just unexpectedly shoots the baker, it's random. Of course, perhaps there was some twisted reason in his mind, and with a trial and possibly ESP that could come out, but by that time its splitting hairs. Evil is as evil does. Random killings of important people.. someone who just spur of the moment went off and shot somebody. Certainly frightens others for their welfare, as you say. Is it less evil? I have a hard time coming up with sane RW examples. Are you suggesting people are sympathetic towards the psychopaths? Sirhan Sirhan shoots RFK in a rage, is he less evil than if a terrorist shoots RFK? At first report in the news, the stereotypical way the media was in the 60's, I don't think people saw a difference. Not until after SS was certified. And even then, are people going to go back, and now think he was less evil? The late James Earl Ray who shot Martin Luther King, contested after confessing to being the lone gunman, that instead he was caught up in a conspiracy. Did people regard him as more evil because of that. A lot of people recently, including King's family, regarded him as less evil and suggested he wasn't guilty. Certainly, he was regarded as most evil in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, when his reasons were irrational. I think they're both evil, though the latter (random-killer) is perhaps more inclined to have no rational reason for killing and being a psycopath. At first examination, I don't see a difference. People make up their minds on the basis of the murder; before they learn the reason for it. Murder is evil. Ascribing reasons to justify it can only make it appear less evil. Sometimes the reasons attached to a murder actually make it appear downright good (killing during wartime, capital punishment.) -- Stonelight *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 18:04:23 CEST From: "Herve Musseau" Subject: [MYSTARA] - Gareth All this thinking about Gareth made me realize something : Does anyone else see how much Gareth resembles to the Bible? Well, that was probably intentional from Ann Dupuis. After all, many different religions are represented on Mystara, including of course ancient mythological pantheons (Norse, Greek...), Islam (Al-Kalim), and Jews (the SE). But no religious system had much in common with Christianity, though some have argue that Heldannic Knights or the Narvaez Inquisition are inspired from emantions of the Catholic Church at different eras. But there was nothing like the core of Christian faith. It is interesting to note, however, that to not be too obvious, Gareth's faith replaces the Romans and Jews by Huleans and Sindhi, which has nothing in common. Now, Christianity is (besides from the Old Testament) based on the life, acts and message of Jesus Christ, of course. In the case of Gareth, Sitara is then Jesus; she is the one who preaches and brings Gareth's word of wisdom. But in Mystara, we have a second character, Anand, who is more of a warrior; this to my knowledge has no equivalent in RW Jesus's life. To see why I make this comparison, let's see the context. The Palestin was occupied by the Romans, the Jews were awaiting the Messiah that would free them like Moses freed them from the Egytians. The Jews believed the Messiah would free them by raising an army and fighting, but Jesus promoted peace. Not to mention that he said the Jews had somewhat forgotten their God's words, and the Jews were divided between different currents. In Mystara, the Huleans occupy Sind, and the Sindhi hope that they will be freed from that occupation. There comes Sitara with the word of Gareth, who promotes self-enlightment (a bit like Moses vs. the Egyptian gods). Now, the difference is that here we have anand who indeed fights for the liberation of Sind. And the divided families of Jews that don't want to recognize jesus as their Messiah are of course the Sindhi priestly caste (what's their name?) who have to cooperate with the followers of Gareth but wish to betray them ASAP. On that subject, and I don't know if that was made on purpose because I'm not the one in charge od Sind, in the 1015 almanac, one of the two leaders of the cult of Gareth is killed because of the treachery/Betrayal of the Rishayas (is that the word?) (I won't tell you which one so as not to spoil it all...) You should also remember that Christianity was never very successful in the lands were it started. Christianity exported well though, especially in Europe, in the Roman Empire. Already the cult of Gareth has spread to Darokin and the Black Mountains, and in the 1015 almanac it continues to spread. Could that mean that it could one day become dominant in Hule? Can anyone else than me see followers of Gareth eaten by lions at the Tyatian Colosseum? One important thing in the New Testament is the miracles that Jesus performed. In a world where magic is common, in which priests do cast spell (and thus perform miracles everyday) (and those very spells are inspired from the Bible, mostly, as pointed out in a previous discussion), Sitara did perform a miracle of her own : She raised someone from the dead during the Day of Dread, when other priests have no such power. Now, the most important event in the Christian faith is the death and resurrection of Jesus. This obviously has not happened (unless you assume it was what happened when I say someone did die; I won't tell for now). Can you see the Rishyias give Sitara to the Huleans (maybe after she's betrayed by one other follower of Gareth) and she be crucified, and then return from the dead? Hmmm. Doesn't that give you ideas for your campaigns? Well, maybe it will give some of my fellow almanac writers ideas... Brizio, I think it's you who now decide the future of Sind, isn't it? PS: please, I don't want to start a "my religion is better than yours" debate. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 18:09:30 +0200 From: DM Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Verthandi At 19.10 06/05/98 +0100, Robert Fry wrote: II like Verthandi. It could, and it would make the Yavdlomese (Yavi? Yavs? Yavdlomers? 3;D> ) unique. A DM could generalize it to be diverse manifestations of all disciplines, though the particular school of thought that would apply to the precognitive psychic abilities would be Clairsentience (its devotions and sciences are most akin to Divination magic.) Those would include (from PO:S&P, I don't have Psionicist's HB handy) All-around vision, Combat mind, Danger sense, Feel light, Feel sound, Hear light, Know direction, Know location, Poison sense, Radial navigation, See sound, Spirit sense, Aura sight, Clairaudience, Clairvoyance, Object reading, Precognition, Sensitivity to psychic impressions. Perhaps different divisions of the ramlas, or noble seer class, could be formed, with all the rivalry, political implications, and cultural consequences that would come from this, based on some sets of these abilities (for one Seer to attain all of the Clairsentient sciences and devotions would be virtually impossible.) Perhaps related psychic traits could be passed through family lines or perhaps commonly run in specific tribes or locales on the surface. You could have the Sensing Ramlas (ramli?), who have one or more of the sensory and detective devotions and sciences (Spirit Sense, Psychic Impressions, Object Reading) They could wear, say, red sashes, and have a certain agenda in Divinarchy politics related to the truth or perhaps tight integration with the natural forces. Then you could have the Seeing/Hearing Ramlas, who alledgedly are more in touch with the spiritual world and its agenda for the develop- ment of the Yavdlom people (they hear voices or see omens). They wear purple sashes. They possess the Hearing, Seeing and Knowing devotions, plus Clairaudience and/or Clairvoyance. Then you have the Blind Ramlas, who as payment for the privilege of seeing the future, pluck out their eyes upon reaching adulthood. They don't wear a sash, they can be recognized by virtue of their sacrifice. They have Precognition to high levels and a smattering of other devotions. Their only agenda is the uncovering of the truth. These are of course just suggestions. Canon implies the Divine powers of the Yav-whatevers have a magical basis, though your suggestion could open a door for Psionics into Mystara and could be workable. How- ever, there's little basis for the other schools of thought ('cept perhaps the Telepathic science of ESP), especially Psycoportive and Psychometabolic, to be included in the Most Serene Divinarchy. A drawback might be as described in CoM though, that those with the ability to see are indoctrinated into the clergy, and therefore would at some point be clerics. Whether this is temporary and can be satisfied by dual-classing is campaign-to-campaign matter, I suppose. 3:)> >I have the Champions of Mystara set so I know they get their skills from a combination of things, so it isn't likely that anyone not BORN there would gain these particular abilities. I also know that, in the past, it was specificly tied to the Artifact that Yav mucked about with, but I seem to remember that he eliminated this cause-and-effect during his path to immortality. I know CoM linked the effect of the artifact to the amount of Sheyallia elvish blood in the individual, which I would think would have to be specifically Sheyallia, since no mention is made of other Elves entering the AoE of the artifact and regaining their ability to see (but that those with some of the blood would wax and wane in ability with proximity to the artifact.) When Yav completed the path of the Dynast, he had stopped the arti- fact, but apparently the people still possess some divining abilities to this day, so it must not've been entirely fixed. Since he tuned it sooo much, its not unreasonable to think after another 250 years ir might be out of alignment, and begin imparting psionic abilities on people. -- Stonelight *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 12:34:26 -0400 From: Daly Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Verthandi At 06:09 PM 5/7/98 +0200, you wrote: >At 19.10 06/05/98 +0100, Robert Fry wrote: III like Verthandi. Later on, it became decidedly Greek (even changing the official language from Latin to Greek). ************ Aleksei Andrievski aka Solmyr, Archmage of the Azure Star Visit the Archmage's Tower at http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Fortress/2198/index.html *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 18:49:23 +0200 From: DM Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Verthandi At 12.34 07/05/98 -0400, Daly wrote: >At 06:09 PM 5/7/98 +0200, DM wrote: >>In RW, Verthandi forms together with Skuld and Tyche (?) the Norns, equivalent of the Greek Parches (Clotho, Lachesi and Athropos). I have always considered this to be true: Lawful Evil - The corrupt city official, or someone who bends the laws to further his/her own ends. Neutral Evil - Doesn't care about laws, plans out his deeds such that the appropriate impact is made, and he gets away scot free. Chaotic Evil - Random acts of Evil, No real planning, just sees and opportunity to screw someone over, and grabs it without a second thought. Also I know very litle about what is Byzantine. I've always had the impression that the Byzantine Empire had a lot in common with the Roman Empire, though. The Byzantine Empire was the eastern part of the Roman Empire when they decided it was too big to rule under one emperor, so they divided it and two emperors ruled. Whereas the western half fell in the fifth century from barbarians, and the eastern half was sacked several times by the Huns as well, the eastern half managed to survive into the middle ages. Still, Byzantine architecture (Hagia Sophia?) was greatly influenced (because of its longer lifespan and interaction with) by Islamic culture, it became mono-theistic Christian after the fall of Rome, and it became a rather different-looking beast until eventually the Crusaders came and crashed the party. However, I like my Thyatis without minurets (save perhaps Biazzan), but with columns, not white-washed with dark contrast and shadows but gilded, with many immortals not one, and fostering bloody gladiatorial combat not without sport. Not to say Thyatis could be Byzantine, partly, though Rome, since Rome sired what became Byzantium, makes a good analogy. Especially for those lax on their world history, as I am for example. 3:)> And I would advance, that Thyatis around 0 AC was much more Roman. I believe the same reference says they are mainly concerned with Norwold. But we could expand their influence by saying "The Immortal(s) we are referring to is known as the Crones of Crystikk in Norwold, the Weaver Woman in the Soderfjord Jarldoms, etc" The 3 crones have 3 different alignments (l, c, n), and they enjoy a good fight. "Nothing comes for free". They live in a cave in Norwold and they send dreams to prospective heroes. Interestingly enough, they do not seem tied to any particular race. They pick the pcs in Test of the Warlords (all from the Known World) as their champions and don't seem particularly concerned about the tribes. The above is detail from the module. Here is what I infer/add imc: 1) They are known by many names. The tribes in Norwold believe they actually weave the tapestry of each man's life. The barbaric tribesmen worship, respect, and fear the old women. 2) They are much like a force of nature. They do care about the nomadic barbarian tribesmen but they take no active role. They mainly care about the area as a whole. If the land falls under the rule of a mighty/moral warlord they are satisfied. They don't particularly care about race. 3) People who visit the crones often see looms in the background, harps, books and the like. 4) I pattern them after the Norns and the 3 old women from "The Prydain Cycle" by Lloyd Alexander. In the latter books, the women seemed to change places almost as if each person was more an office than a person. 5) The Crones existed and were worshipped in the time of the Antalians. They are possibly Antalians themselves. 6) They do NOT in reality weave the threads of men. However, they do weave records of the threads of men. This is also pulled directly from Lloyd Alexander. 7) They never give something for nothing. All answers come with a price. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 13:16:59 -0400 From: Daly Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Gareth At 06:56 PM 5/7/98 +0200, you wrote: >At 18.37 06/05/98 +0100, you wrote: >>9. The more varied the list, the more useful it becomes, especially if the 'resource' site/file, whatever is indexed in meaningful ways, such as by class, by location, by level, etc. I also metioned there that I'm hoping to get a few 'generic' NPCs just to round out the list -- ones that could be used just about anywhere in Mystara. This would include individuals who are from somewhere specific (Galantri, Ethengar, etc.) or of a 'Mystara Specific' race (Rakasta, Tortles, etc) but who 'wander the world' or who have taken up residence 'somewhere else' and could effecitively be found just about anywhere on the planet. 'Generic' could, of course, also include true generic NPCs that a DM might even plop into a non-Mystara campaign. Well, I think I could transfer one or two of my own created NPC into your setting but I think they would lose depth. OK, let´s give it a try: A very interesting personality is Pelltar. He is a male mage and has loose ties to some magical libraries. He has a brother named Galvan. They are like both sides to a story. Though both search for knowledge and wisdom (think of the aspect of neutrality) Pelltar is the ruthless one whilst Galvan doesn´t want to have knowledge at any price. Perhaps there is a magic school in the vicinity and they both try to increase their influence on them. The position they take towards the council should be as advisors of different court-members. The most interesting way would be if those two members are "similar opposites" or at least kind of enemies. Physicval appearances: Galvan is in his mid thirties (his looks). He has dark hair and a small face. His face is elven like but has not this "elven grace". He is well grown (6 feet) and quite muskular for a mage. Normally he is rather a listener than a speaker. His first move is to prove a situation analyse and react afterwards. All his actions are analytical and planned. If he speaks it is a low and deep voice but it is no grave cold one. The depth has something warm about it. Although he could perhaps hire PCs to aquire something for him he would never send them on a deathtrip. Pelltar is quite different. He is loud, impulsive and eccentric. He has the same genius his brother (planning, analytical ability) has but he reacts more quickly and has a loose temper (=easy to anger). He is about 5 feet and something. His physics is not that impressive and is more like the one you expect from a mage. His warmth comes from the belly he has because he loves good meals. The most beloved "house help" is his female cook. An elderly lady he sometimes calls "Mom" (not really his mom). In their struggle for knowledge it is inevitable that their interests collide. Although they can be quite tricky to outdo the brother (and/or his PC group) they would never take direct actions against each other. Background: they both want to get as far as their father got as a mage but they both swore that they would never harm each other. Puh, due to my experience I don´t go any further for if nobody is interested it wouldn´t be worth the time for I KNOW what it´s all about. comments?? M. Merrifield" Subject: [MYSTARA] - NPC: Anya Faraday Here's one of the NPC's I did develop for my sea-side village. She's actually pretty generic and could easily be placed in many places throughout Mystara. She could even be placed in a land-bound location, or in a village on the shores of a lake with only minor tweaking. Jenni - ----- Anya Faraday (Normal female Human) STR 8 INT 13 WIS 13 DEX 9 CON 8 CHA 12 Skills: Cooking (WIS), Profession: Hospitality (INT) Anya is a spry but elderly Widow who runs a small establishment known as the "Luncheon House". The "Luncheon House" has a tiny restaurant on the main floor, and has four *very* comfortable rooms (each with a double bed) for 'rent' on the second floor. There is also a 'parlor' between the restaurant area and the stairs to the second floor, where Anya's guests may relax during the day or before retiring for bed. Anya's living quarters are at the back of the main floor. Anya is a very kind hostess, who treats the people staying with her as if they were simply house guests rather than temporary boarders. She is very open minded and equally polite to anyone staying with her, regardless of race or profession. Guests she has come to know well, because they have stayed with her a few times in the past, or who have been staying with her over a long period of time, will occationally be invited into her library for polite evening conversation and a 'nightcap'. The library is a room just off of the 'parlor' which is technically part of her living quarters on the main floor. It is comfortably furnished, and does have one bookshelf with a smattering of interesting and unusual books on it. The food and the rooms at the "Luncheon House" are just slightly more expensive than at a normal Inn, but the general ambiance and comfort more than makes up for it. It is often frequented by merchants or nobles who have decided to take a holiday 'away from it all', or by other visitors to the village who feel like 'pampering' themselves a little and who would probably not normally stay at a top end inn. The "Luncheon House" is located a short distance away from the village core on a nice parcle of land with a low white picket fence around three sides of it. The fourth side is open to a small, sandy beach which is just perfect for swimming or sunbathing. There is a small bathhouse on the property which may be used by 'house guests', but it is up to them to draw and heat their own water from the nearby well. The one real 'oddity' about Anya is her love of cats -- she never had any children before her husband (a navigator) died in a sea storm, and she has refocused her motherly attentions on the roughly 20 cats (give or take a few, depending on the season) that live with her. Many of the cats will always be found lounging around outside the "Luncheon House" (unless it is raining) and in Anya's living quarters. Anya ruthlessly turns them out of the Restaurant area and the 'guest rooms' if they happen to wander in, scolding them as if they were naughty children. Guests who are invited into the 'library' will often have to put up with at least one or two cats deciding that their lap is the most comfortable place in the room. Anya's 'house guests' (those staying in the rooms) are treated to a home made breakfast, gratis. The "Luncheon House Restaurant" is only open to the public for lunch, with one "sitting" at 12:30pm. Lunch is a grand affair in this establishment, always consisting of a set menu of home-made items : Soup (vegetable or fish based) or Salad (when fresh vegetables are in season), Fresh bread or rolls, Cheeses and/or Spreads, a main course (usually some kind of fish, but occationally other meats), and some kind of scrumptious dessert. A few drinks are included with the meal. There meal is a fixed price, no matter how much or how little the guest eats, but when the whole meal is eaten, the price is quite reasonable, considering that Anya does most if the cooking, does it well, and with flair. She does have two girls from the village who come in to help her to prepare and serve food for her 'luncheon guests'. The "Luncheon House" has two tables for four and two tables for two in the restaurant, which can be moved around to accomodate larger parties. Individuals planning on eating lunch at the "Luncheon House" must inform Anya when they wish to dine and pay in advance. Anya prefers to know at least a day in advance, but must be done no later that 8am on the same day. Lunch requests can also be done up to a week in advance, and this is highly recommended for groups larger than six. (Anya always informs new 'house guests' of this rule when they first start staying with her). Sometimes Anya will join her 'guests', sharing a table with some, or just wandering the room, chatting. Anya always uses fine table linens and utensils and she expects her guests to behave as gentlemen and ladies while they are eating there. Note that Anya does not run the "Luncheon House" for the money, but rather for the companionship she gains from having a variety of people 'visit' with her. She charges money because she is smart enough to know that there are those who would take advantage of her if she didn't. Frequently, she can go for weeks with no 'house guests' or 'lunch guests'. When this is the case, she will often wander into the village, especially on Market day, to visit and chat with her neighbours. Everyone in the village knows and likes Anya, and would do almost anything to help her in time of need. Anya owns no magic and no weapons of any kind. She is simply a kind, old lady who loves cats and seeks human companionship where she can find it. She doesn't have a lot of money, but always seems to have enough to get by. Other than her table linens and silver eating utensils, she has little of any significant value. Anya's establishment is a great place for PC's to find out about as a 'change of pace' from the standard old Inn and Tavern. If they take the time and get to know Anya, they may discover that she has a well of of useful information stored in her keen mind. - -- Jenni A. M. No stats are given except class and level. As for physical look please refer to the movie "Ghostbusters". Feel free to change the names of NPC (as DM suggested me) if you don't like RW characters in your campaign. Needlees to say, the Ghostbusters have lot of magical items (even unusual ones) related to undead (control, protection from...). Special thanks to DM for his suggestion and to Internet Movie Database http://it.imdb.com/ for details and quotes from the RW movie. Comments are welcome. GHOSTBUSTERS The "Ghostbusters" are a group of adventurers based in Darokin City at the corner between Seventh and Temple. Ghostbusters investigate about everything that involves Entropy, their specialty being eliminating undead from haunted buildings. The group consists in five humans, recognizable from the symbol (the same of the movie) engraved on their armor, cloaks and cart. Here they are: Egon Spengler, M 11, necromancer of the second circle, Graez, Aalban, Glantri Peter Venkman, F 10, Paladin of Ixion, Darokin City, Darokin Raymond Stantz, C 9 of Ixion, Darokin City, Darokin Winston Zeddmore, F 7, Athenos, Darokin Janine Melnitz, NW, Me 4, clerk, Elstrich, Darokin The "Ghostbusters" are quite famous in central Darokin, from Athenos up to Akorros. Their repeated and unfruitful attempts at disclosing the secret of Itheldown Island are well known too: as soon as they've gathered the necessary money, these fearless adeventurers are used to launch an expedition to Itheldown Castle. Until now their attempts were not very lucky, though many darokinians thinks that the "Ghostbuster" were very lucky going back home well and alive. Egon Spengler: born in Graez in 960 AC and graduated at the Great School of Magic in Glantri City in 994 AC, Egon is the mage and inventor of the group. Thanks to his magic cleverness and the crafting skills that his father, a siege machine builder, thaught him, Egon creates incredible magical items and machines that not alway work as they should… Egon is also a necromancer of the second circle. Notable possessions: diamond's key, heart's key (from Gaz3) Typical sentence: "Don't cross the streams." Peter Venkman: born in Darokin City in 969 AC, boyhood-friend of Raymond Stantz and former Sergeant of the Darokinian Army, Peter became a Paladin of Ixion a couple of years ago when his parents were killed by a vampire during a journey in Karameikos. Peter is one of the group's founders (the other being Raymond) and the current leader. Notable possession: rapier +2 flaming Typical sentence: "We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!" Raymond Stantz: born in Darokin City in 968 AC, boyhood-friend of Peter Venkman, Raymond is the quieter and thoughtful member of the group. He's a Cleric of Ixion, who's devoted his whole life to the endless struggle against Entropy and for this reason he, and Peter, created the "Ghostbusters". Even if sometimes he doesn't share Egon's opinions and methods, it was Raymond to hire the glantrian maintaining that they needed a mage in the group. Notable possession: Ecto guide to the Prime, Life Protection Ring Typical sentence: (to whatever fiend) "Good evening. As a duly designated representative of the City, Region and Republic of Darokin, I order you to cease any and all supernatural activities and return forthwith to your place of origin or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension." Winston Zeddmore: born in Athenos in 973 AC from a darokinian father (a merchant) and a Pearl-islander mother (former slave in Thyatis), Winston is the last addition to the group. Very concerned about slavery and openly enemy of Thyatis, Winston joined the group just for the payroll. Actually he doesn't know very much about undead, anyway he's quite skilled with weapons having served at Ft. Hobart for several years. Notable possession: Scarab of Protection (family heirloom) Typical sentence: "Ray, when someone asks you if you're an Immortal, say YES!" Janine Melnitz: born in Elstritch in 980 AC and orphan since 1000 AC, when a mysterious swamp monster swallowed his parents, Janine has since then changed several jobs to earn her living. Being interested in supernatural mosters and events since she was young, Janine has now found the job of her life working as clerk for the "Ghostbusters". Obviously Janine does not take part to adventures, but it's always possible to find her at the group's office at the corner between Seventh and Temple. Notable possession: Typical sentence: "Do you believe in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, telekinetic movement, full trance medium, the monster of lake Klintest and the Hollow World theories?" ************** Fabrizio Paoli brizio@lunet.it rafiel@geocities.com DM in City Of The Stars - Mystaran Almanac Assistant Leader of Privateers - Student of Aerospace Enginnering Home Page: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Dungeon/4560 *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe mystara-l' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 21:49:21 +0200 From: Fabrizio Paoli Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] - Any More NPC's?
