Hi, I managed to get access to a box[1] with some database stuff on it and was thinking that it'd be cool to have the almanac's stored in a db for searchability and stuff. I managed to put together a couple of things over the weekend and the results can be seen at http://thing.slashnull.org/almanac.html It's very much in the alpha stage development never mind beta, but there's a couple of things still to be done: see that all the info is there: I had to do some wierd munging to split things into the database and it didn't work entirely for strangely formatted entries [I've managed to get all the entries with no year in them for instance :) ] so there may be a few bugs there. I'd like to get them ironed out before the difficult bit The Difficult Bit: Get all the links to work. The idea is that each entry has a unique id and a list of links to the other id's. I couldn't figure out a way to get this info from the files themselves (especially since some refer to dates which have several entries) so it's going to have to be done manually. Anyway, that'll take some time and I'll want to have the rest of it finished before then so that the id's aren't changing about if I've missed something. So if people can test this out and mail me the problems that's be cool! thanks, gordon [1] php apache mysql combo on linux - it's cool :) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 16:26:42 -0300 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Andre Cavalcanti Rocha Martins Subject: Mystaran Pbem Game Comments: cc: acrmartins@sol.com.br MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Hi, I have a online game in Mystara that has been going on for almost three years now. We used to play on Irc, but people are having more and more trouble trying to show up, so I decided to move the game to email, at least, for now. This way, I am opening a few positions (I am still not sure about the number, so, if you are interested, hurry up). There is a web site with most of the logs of our sessions, but those are huge (and I am not at home right now, to send the right address) , so this is a summary of has happened so far. The game started in Karameikos, 1003AC. The players were contacted by a man to check news about an earthquake and a landslide in the northern mountains who would have opened the way to an unknown valley. There they found a keep, inhabited by odd electrical zombies and freed some sort of wizard from a mirror (I guess you all know what I mean). The valley also opened to places deeper in the mountains, but they were attacked by an orc army and surrendered before exploring any further. Enslaved, they were already in thyatian waters, when they managed to take control of the Iron Ring ship they were travelling in and headed back to Karameikos. Their stories prompted a new expedition to the valley (altough, no action against Ludwig), but, with winter arriving, the mountain passages were closed. After some investigation, the party managed to find a second entrance to the area they had explored, this time, through the lost valley of the hutaakans, after they helped both sides to join forces in a ceremony to keep a old terror that was attacking the valley sleeping. Corran Keep was retaken soon after, the party returned to the capital, getting involved into some political (and not so political) problems, involving Baron Kelvin, princess Adriana and a certain alphatian airship I will not name here. Rumours about a new gnoll invasion coming from the valley they had uncivered started to spread and the Duke mounted an expedition to check it, right the wrongs and protect the land. The party stayed in the capital for a little longer, but, finally, they decided to return north and see how things were going there. They are in the process of figuring it out. They can see from where they are the company of the Duke's men camped around the temple where the Kartoeba, the old horror they had helped put to sleep, is supposedly sleeping. Supposedly, because they all believe they have seen the thing crawling back into the temple as soon as the temple was visible to them. Now, two guards are begging them to not go any further and actually, help them get away fromthe valley and from Karameikos. They have promissed to tell all they have seen happening in the valley if they do. That's the story so far, or a small part of it. WotI will be used, but with several changes. In any case, if you are thinking about joining, let me know how much you know about it and Mystara in general. Everyone is welcome, regardless od knowledge, anyway. The new players will be among the adventurers who joined the duke's men and know something of what is happening in the valley or will pick a couple of players whose players had to drop out. One final important note: Do not answer to me via the list. Send any doubts you may still have or ideas for a character to my personal addresses directly, either acrmartins@sol.com.br (home, preferred address) or andre.martins@bcb.gov.br (office, if you really need to) Emails sent to the list will simply be ignored, as a way to avoid spamming it. Hope to be hearing from all of you soon. Remember that Odysseus got lost for ten years trying to go from northwestern Turkey to an island off the west coast of Greece -- a voyage that modern sailors could handle in a few days even in a sailboat. And while the Chinese were for much of their history more advanced than Europeans, they were never THAT far ahead of them. But then again, since Laterre is based on real world mythology, it would be an easy matter to say that Nyx/Sharvari lived in the Atlantean age, when Atlantis, Mu, Lemuria and other advanced legendary civilizations had not yet sunk beneath the waves. That would have the advantage of letting the inhabitants of the Laterran equivalent of medieval India have fairly normal lives, with the undead kingdom of horrors a dimly remembered legend of horror. Of course, in that case the invasion of Hind that destroys Sharvari's undead master would come from Mu or Lemuria rather than "Saracenia". ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 22:26:16 EST Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: David Knott Subject: Greek Nyx (was The Golden Empire) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 2000-02-29 6:50:11 PM Eastern Standard Time, jobo@EIRCOM.NET writes: << i thought i was fairly well up on mystara, but i have never heard of this hesiod's theogony. please explain, is this mystara source material or someone's own handy work. >> Hesiod was an ancient Greek poet whose works included poem that gave a history and genealogy of the Greek gods called "Theogony". And I'm still interested in getting feedback -- of either the 'just read it' or the 'play tested it' kind, though I must admit a preference for getting some 3rd party 'play tested it' comments -- that would be simply awesome. I've also uploaded a ZIP file that contains the RTF version of the document /without maps/ and the individual map files in JPG format. I didn't used to have the RTF available at the site, though I mentioned one was available. This was because the RTF of the file /with/ the maps included /and/ ZIP-ed still came at at a honkin' 22 MB! Then I discovered that most people's email accounts wouldn't even accept such a large file. After experimenting, I realized that by removing the map images, the /un-ZIP-ed/ RTF only came to 164 KB, and since the original JPG version of the maps files were only in the 300 to 500 KB range... well, putting it all into a ZIP file and uploading that to the web site just seemed to make good sense. :-) [*] For any new list members unfamiliar with it, I've included the "player safe" introduction at the end of this message ;-) -------------------------------------------------- Paths and Points: Alternative Wizard Magic for D&D -------------------------------------------------- This is an alternative Wizard Magic System that I was using in my last D&D campaign. It is extensively based on a system for AD&D of the same name that was created by our esteemed Admin, Leroy Van Camp [*]. My version has been /seriously/ modified, however for use in Mystara using "original" D&D rules. This is currently only available as two MS Word 97 documents or as a ZIP file containing four files -- two in RTF and the same two MS Word 97 versions. However ... if I get a reasonable indication that people would appreciate seeing an HTML'ized version of this too ... I might be persuaded to consider it... ;-) [*] Find Leroy's original version at "The Tarkas Brain Lab IV": . ------------------------------------ MOrient Files -- Going, Going, Gone! ------------------------------------ Lastly, I've finally /removed/ all the files for the MOrient project, since it -- at least in it's original incarnation -- is essentially dead. I've still got the files on my hard drive though, if anyone wants to comb through them and try to revive anything. (If you do, and still want to use the idea of "draconic emperors" let me know -- that's where my interest lay, but no one else seemed inclined to follow it up and I usually (although not always) need another interested person as a 'bouncing board' to help me get started developing such things...) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Well that's basically it ... oh yeah -- the URL is http://www.jamm.com/mystara/index.html ;-) Jenni A. As such, the goods which they produce are greatly valued and highly sought after. Just When word of a new artisan of exceptional talent reaches the market place, there is often a frenzy of speculation about his or her future and a great deal of haggling over the worth of their existing pieces. It is just such and event that brings the characters face to face with a true fiend in this adventure. A female artisan by the name of Matrissa has suddenly taken the Darokin Art World by surprise. Rumours of her talent and skill for crafting magnificent stone busts has spread throughout the city. She works only in jet and produces pieces of such detail and quality that none like it has been seen in recent history. Exactly four of her works are on display at a local museum/art gallery in the city of Darokin, brought to the city by Simon Treemonsha, an Elf from Akorros, who is well known as an agent of Toney House. No other examples of her work are known to have been sold to private individuals and speculation on the eventual value of her art is high. The works on display are to be auctioned off in a few days time, and the success or failure of this auction will partially determine what will happen in the art world. In this module, the PC's either decide or are hired to make a voyage to Matrissa's home (which is known to be south of Akorros) in response to the success of the auction. This journey has one primary purpose: to purchase as much of her work as the characters can for as little as they can. If they're lucky and play their cards right, they might make a pretty penny from this venture.
