According to WotI, Chardastes should be one of the minor patrons of the CoT. Another such lesser hero deity could be the Sage of the Lake of Lost Dreams, briefly mentioned in DDA1- Eye of Traldar. He has become a major NPC i my campaign. I guess I could post a writeup if anyone is interested. > Church of Karameikos > Main patrons: Asterius, Vanya, Kagyar, Ilsundal & Valerias > Minor patrons: not many, but Chardastes is among them. The reason why chardastes is mentioned among the patrons of the church of karameikos is that he was described as such in one of the early B modules. However, this was prior to the release of Gaz 1 - Grand Duchy of Karameikos, and Karameikos probably hadn't been properly defined back then. Chardastes is mentioned as a patron of the CoT in WotI and IMO he fits better with that Church. Note that both Gaz 1 and WotI were written by Aaron Allston. If it is true that the CoK reveres CoT immortals as minor deities, then Chardastes would obviously be among these. However, I think this is a bad idea, because it destroys much of the potential for religious conflicts in Karameikos. Alfric Odebury would definately not have any of those Traladaran Immortals in his pantheon. The other Immortals mentioned my Alan Shutko fit really well as minor deities within the CoK. IMC I have also included Tyche, under the name Fortuna, as a minor deity. > Both Churches have religious beliefs which are linked to the revered > Immortals, but less extreme then it could be in a single-immortal cult > (example, the Cult of Halav). IMC, the names of the immortals described by Mystaros have been forgotten by modern Traldarans, and they are only mentioned as the Elder Immortals. Hvard Haavard R. Well, two is better than one, heh? Chardastes Lesser Power of the Sphere of Time, NG Chardastes is the patron of healing and doctors. He has a small following in Karameikos, but otherwise his followers are scattered around the world, acting as doctors to follow his example. Chardastes was, in life, a Traldar magic user who focused his spells on the use of herbs to cure diseases, trying to find ways for non priestly magic to cure people. After long years spent in trying he succeded, and founded a Healing Order in the old Traladara, not long before the rise of King Halav. But Chardastes soon discovered that most of his followers were not really interested in the healing possibilities of magic, but rather in the use of magic to further their dreams of power; many, when they understood Chardastes couldn't help them, left the order. As the years passed, Chardastes remained with very few followers, and retired deeper into the forests of Traladara to continue his magical studies, helping the small communities that lived around him. He earned the admiration of Ordana, who liked the great respect Chardastes showed towards the plant races that he studied and used as components for his spells. Chardastes decided to search for Immortality, to continue from his new position to fight diseases that could harm the mortal races. With his most loyal friends, Chardastes traveled across Traladara and confronted a black dragon who possessed an artifact which allowed to travel through time; in his great respect of life, Chardastes managed to defeat the creature without killing it. Then, after his return, he gathered his few disciples and told them he had to leave for a long time, but he would have returned in case of need. Chardastes came back three times, to keep the small community alive and he managed also to save many of the small village of the surrounding from destruction, first during a werewolf invasion, second when a lich attempted to submit the order to his evil plans, and finally when clerics of Thanatos had entered in the order to destroy it from the inside. The Healing Order of Chardastes had, by that time, slowly passed from the hands of magic user to those of druids, joined by clerics when Chardastes finally achieved Immortality. Chardastes is a extremely good Immortal. He has an immense love for life, and views his Immortal condition only as the situation of a man of a higher rank that can help in a better way his fellows. He often visits Mystara, and is somehow embarassed by the formal rituals clerics devote to deities. He often does not understand why Immortals plot and plan behind the shoulders of mortals, forgetting what they were. He is a peaceful creature like his friend Koryis, although he believes that sometimes it is impossible to avoid the use of violence. He hates the most destructive Entropic Immortals and the most selfish and plotting Immortals of all spheres, but has no hate for Entropy as a Sphere. He merely states that many Immortals don't understand that the role of Entropy is important as a part of the Universe's balance; among these unknowing Immortals are most of the Entropic themselves. Allies: Koryis, Benekander Foes: Loki, Masauwu Aliases: In Thyatis, Chardastes is known as Aesculapius. Aesculapius was a follower of Chardastes, believed by many Thyathians to be a reincarnation of the Immortal. In fact, Aesculapius failed on his quest for Immortality, and Chardastes assumed this second name as a sort of gift to the deceased, faithful and unlucky follower. Symbol: Bell Worshipper's Alignment: LG, NG, CG, LN, N Chardastes' Avatar (Druid 20, Mage 25): Chardastes appears to be a normal man of Traladaran ethnicity, about 40 years old. He has brown hair and beard, dark intense eyes, and a healthy appearance. He is dressed as a scholar, preferring green and light brown colours. Chardastes favors spells of the divination and alteration schools, and never use necromantic spells. He can use all the spells of healing, no matter of which sphere or school. AC 2, MV 15, HP 170, THACO 2, Dmg 1d6+6 (battle staff +4 and str +2), MR 50%, SZ M; STR 18, DEX 15, CON 25, INT 18, WIS 25, CHA 18 Special Att./Def: Chardastes can, at will, heal himself or any non evil creature in sight, three times a day per person. He is never attacked by forest creatures and animals with intellignece of 4 or less. He is immune to all reversed forms of healing spells and to all negative necromantic spells. If forced to combat, the avatar uses a Battle Staff +4 with the power to Stun every being hit (save versus paralysis with a 4 penalty to avoid this effect). While holding the Staff, Chardastes regenerates 4 hit points per round. Other Manifestations: Chardastes rarely appears in a form different from that of his avatars, which are often present in Mystara, because he dislikes the use of symbols and cryptic messages that could not be easily understood. He sees such cryptic manifestations to be silly jokes on the part of Immortals, who should either be clear in their statements or remain silent. The rare times he uses these manifestations are only in times of great calamities, like to prevent an incoming plague. In this case, the viewers might see healthy plants die suddenly in the front of them, and then immediately come back to life (Chardastes would never stand that a plant has to die to allow him to send a message). The Church Clergy: Specialty Priests, Clerics Alignment: LG, NG, CG, LN, N Turn Undead: Yes All clerics and specialty priests of Chardastes receive the Herbalism and Healing proficiencies as bonuses. They can be of any race. Chardastes has few clerics, although many lay folk pray to him when seriously ill. Chardastes' followers are mostly part of the Healing Order of Karameikos. The church hierarchy is thus not particularly highly organized, and priests are allowed and encouraged to return to their families and help their communities after their initial training with the Order. They must never ask payment for their deeds, and so must have another way of earning their living. This is a major problem that keeps the number of clerics of Chardastes low; because his priests are always helping the needy, they do not have much time to devote themselves to other activities. Many are sustained by the community, though, and this is permitted by the Immortal. Clerics or priests of Chardastes are not allowed to resurrect people who have died of natural causes. Dogma: Life must be loved in all forms, from cradle to grave. Men and Immortals alike cannot break the circle of life, and one day everyone and everything must die. Animals and men are equal, and Healers and Clerics must help both in an equal way. To kill someone or something is to meddle with the natural forces of Life, deeciding who should live or die, and is to be avoided unless absolutely necessary. The same is true of resurrecting those who have died naturally, or of prolonging lives in undeath. Speak always the truth, but lie if a lie can help save a life without doing any harm, and if possible reveal and repent for it. Holy Days/Important Ceremonies: Priests of Chardastes especially revere the 3rd full moon day of Klarmont. This day is believed in legends to be the day Chardastes found proof of the presence of evil spies in his first school, when Chardastes was forced "to show the strong fist," a thing that he seldom does. This day, all priests and clerics of Chardastes cannot heal, and can only cast reversed spells, so in the previous week they are double as active as normal in order to prevent any problems on this day. Followers and priests of Chardastes alike on this day show their dislike toward hated people and enemies, using yew tree leaves to form crowns that they put on the head of the people they dislike during all the day. Major centers of worship: The School of Healers in the Dymrak forest, not far from from the Vyalia elves' settlements, is the first school founded by Chardastes around 600 BC. It is the only "official" center of worship in the Old World, and is a small school where novices learn to heal in the name of Chardastes. Not only priests and clerics are found there, but also humans, elves and centaurs willing to learn to be doctors. It's both a religious center and a technical school for doctors. A well equipped library is found here, with several volumes on anatomy, biology, botany, and virology. The school survived mainly because of the interest of elves of the region, and thanks to Chardastes' interventions during his quest for Immortality. The priests of Chardastes that act as teachers, and non-cleric scholars of the School of Healers are called the Healing Order of Karameikos. Specialty Priests (Healers): Prime Requisites: Wisdom 12, Constitution 12 Alignment: Any good Weapons: Any bludgeoning Armor: Chain Mail, Banded Armor, Scale Mail, Leather Armors Major Spheres: Animal, Creation, Elemental (earth & water), Healing, Plant, Protection Minor Spheres: Combat, Divination, Elemental (fire & air), Time, Wards Magical Items: Same as clerics, plus those allowed of druids Required Nonweapon Proficiencies: Survival (forest) Bonus Nonweapon Proficiencies: Healing, Herbalism Special Abilities: All Healing spells are cast by Healers as if they were of 1 level less; they can also cast the Cure Light Wounds spell twice a day at first level At 3rd level, Healers can cast one bonus Cure Disease spell per day for every three levels of the priest At 6th level, Healers can cast a Mass Healing spell once per day At 9th level, Healers become able to cast better Healing Spells: every time they roll for duration or effect they ignore results of 1 (for example, Cure Light Wounds heals min. 2+1 hp) At 12th level, Healers can cast Protection from Negative Energy Plane once a day; for every two levels after 12th, they can cast it another time At 15th level, Healers automatically save versus necromantic and reversed healing spells At 18th level, Healers can ignore results of 1 and 2 when casting Healing spells At 20th level, Healers become immune to reversed healing spells, and can ignore results of 1,2 and 3. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 08:19:17 EDT Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Arminath Wynter Subject: Re: Chardastes MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I dunno...Chardastes IMC followed the small blurb given for him in the Codex of the Immortals, that of an Immortal Patron of Healers, and is part of the Traladarin/Milenian pantheon. He didn't fit well into Atruaghin lands, though, yearning for adventure, and to see the outside world. At age 18, he set out to explore the lands beyond the plateau. He has led a full life, but has settled somewhat down at the present time, tiring of years of adventuring that put his life at risk. Now he seeks to win his money not by dangerous quests but by easy cons. Personality: Erik is extremely self-centered - he does what's good for him, and doesn't really give a darn about anyone or anything else. He'll play the devoted friend, the honest merchant, the committed paramour - whatever suits his purposes. Whatever personality he exposes to others is merely a front for his egocentric self. Appearance: Erik wears typical Horse Clan garb, but adds on all kinds of jewelry (often of animal origin) and paints or dyes to make him appear more exotic. He tries to fit the common foreigner opinion of what an Atruaghin native should be, rather than what they actually are. He is fairly handsome, of average height and weight, with dark black hair. He often is armed with concealed daggers and a blowgun. Combat Notes: He is an 8th-level thief. Languages: Horse Clan hand signals, Ierendi, Thyatian, Common, Chaotic. General Skills: Deception (Ch), Bravery (W), Danger Sense (W). DM Notes: Erik plays the part of the stereotyped Atruaghin to the max in order to connive tourists out of their gold pieces. He'll spin all kinds of tales about the ancestral spirits, fictional rituals and communion with animals - whatever he thinks his target is looking for. "Us Atruaghin, we feel a special bond to the mother earth, and she in turn blesses us with crops without having to work the land. The hawks guard us at night, and the lions at day. If you too abandon yourself of worldly posessions, you may be given the same blessings. I can even help dispose of your goods for you, if you will allow me the honor - there is a sacred rite which outsiders must not see, but which will give you eternal reward, if your soul is pure and you walk with nature." He channels spirits, does rain dances and plays his role to the full tilt. Should anyone inquire about visiting Atruaghin lands, Erik often directs them to the territory of the Tiger clan, as this will reduce the chances of others discovering the falsehood of his claims. He may attack individuals who he sees as weaker, but prefers to avoid any contact with the guard, and will tend to flee and recreate his life elsewhere if confronted, rather than fight. - Mischa "The barbarous gold barons--they do not find the gold, they do not mine the gold, they do not mill the gold, but by some weird alchemy all the gold belongs to them." - Big Bill Haywood ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 14:33:24 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Evil Genius Subject: Re: NPC: Erik Screaming Hawk Mystara wrote: >> Another Ierendi/cross-culture char - please let me know if these NPCs arehelpful at all - I've gotten 2 positive and no negative comments, but I don't want to post things that aren't of use to the list members << Oh, they're cool. Too bad I just can't justify accepting the position of sole administrator... ;-) Actually, on that note ... I wonder if Leroy /should/ reconsider the Monitors idea, assuming there are enough individuals willing to run the list as a whole who would also fit his general requirements for the moderator role. It occurred to me, what with the current round of Admin nominations and the replies most have been receiving, that sometimes people are less inclined to offer themselves up for a position unless someone /else/ has indicated that they think they would be a good candidate first. In addition ... having given the matter some more thought, I suppose I should have submitted an "application" for list moderator -- sharing the duties with two other individuals shouldn't be too taxing overall, especially as I generally monitor the list traffic on a reasonably continuous basis during the day and even in the evening. So, I'd like to say that, if Leroy decides to try following that route again, I would be willing to be considered for one of those positions. Jenni -- Jenni A. M. (http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/cthulhudrew/mystara.html) The map itself won't change much- I've just got some place names to put in, and some direction arrows and things to add. For those who are interested, it picks up from where the extreme north end of Geoff Gander's Denagoth map leaves off. The mountainous/hilly area on his map is the southern border of my map. Also, for those keeping score, the northern mountain range is the Icereach Range (on the map in CM1: Test of the Warlords or in M2: Vengeance of Alphaks), while the central mountain range is also depicted on those two maps (just for anyone who wanted to place the map on 'canon' materials). I'll be gradually releasing more Ghyr stuff over the next few months, as I finish it and get more information about D&D 3E to assist in the process. She was brought up in the Traladraan faith but is more devoted to the cause of law and good than to the form of worship. If we use the 100+5d6 years from the 2E PHB, then any elf old enough to be a grandparent must be no less than 200+10d6 years old -- and that would be on the young side, as it would be equivalent to 30+2d4 years for a human being. However, since both of the elven princesses of Glantri had married children in 1000 AC, both of them must have been old enough to be grandparents at that time -- but the numbers don's seem to add up. Carnelia is described in Gaz 3 as being a young elf of 180 years of age as of 1000 AC, which is confirmed by her birth year of 820 AC in the PWAs (although for some reason G:KoM pushes her birth back to 812 AC). Carlotina is not described as young in Gaz 3, so presumably she is older than Carnelia -- but no specific age is given in Gaz 3 or G:KoM. However, the PWAs give her a birth year of 911 AC. If that year is correct, then she would be nearly a full century younger than her "young" rival. Since the Glantrian families are the ones that have been analyzed most thoroughly of all elven families of Mystara, what assumptions have the people doing the analysis made about the ages of maturity for Mystaran elves? ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 23:05:23 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Beau Yarbrough Subject: 100 Clans of the Five Shires crests? MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I've just begun reading the "Five Shires" Gazeteer (just finished the player's book, to be precise) and LOVE it. (As opposed to the "Red Steel" set, which is nice enough, but is of no real use to me since I'm unlikely to set any games there due to the Red Curse ... off to Ebay with it!) but I've noticed an error. The crests of the 100 Clans (or at least the 90+ ones mentioned in the Gazeteer) are supposed to be on the back of the map. Weeeeell, my map's one-sided and I expect everyone else's was, too. Are the crests printed anywhere, like "Champions of Mystara?" And it's a pity that they only have an eight mile hex map. The small size of the country would seem to have been a perfect opportunity for a four mile hex map at least. But so far I love, love, love this Gazeteer (based on the player's guide and a slow flip-through of the main book). Jenn Guerra might have some ideas on this, being the Belcadizan author. Myself, I don't attribute too much of anything to it. I think it just depends on the author. For instance, most of the NPC elves (or at least a large number) are rather on the older than thou side, while the Glantrian elves seem (as you point out) very young. For that matter, Drizzt Do'Urden (of FR fame) was described in the Crystal Shard as being much older than he currently is- (p. 20 of TCS: "Two hundred years of living many miles below ground had not been erased by five years on the sunlit surface.") For some reason, R.A. Salvatore later went back and made him something on the order of less than a century old. I don't know if it's a trend for authors to make their elves younger, and thus "more in touch" with humanity, or whatnot, but I've noticed it myself, and have wondered... ----- Andrew "Cthulhudrew" Theisen Aspiring screenwriter, actor, and gadabout jsmill@wans.net "The greatest trick Doug Henning ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." - Keyser Soze ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 00:36:33 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Andrew Theisen Subject: Re: 100 Clans of the Five Shires crests? It's one of the best Gaz's in my opinion. I'm still a little unsure of how the tone shifted in regards to the Immortals with Gaz6 (Kagyar becomes a major figure in Gaz6, whereas the Immortals were largely hands off before that, much as they were in Mentzer's original vision), but the book itself is amazing. Tons of detail on dwarven life, etc. A lot of good material on the clans and territories of Rockhome, an interesting mapping system (dwarven modular blocks, by which they construct all of their cities), and some decent adventures ("Clan War" which is played out in the early months of 1011 AC, is the best). I like using Gaz6 in conjunction with the Dwarves' Handbook. Between the two, there is a wealth of information on the dwarves. (and i just somehow managed to delete that mail when i was intending to reply..pffff, i sure hope i remembered how to spell your name right!) maybe you noticed yourself that despite the good intentions, this is kinda subject that is very hard to deal without passion... so my mail defenately was ment to all who joined the discussion (and we had such a bad weather here then, lame excuse for me "being stormy"?) i still think that everybody should do as they feel is right, but you defenately were right when you said, that it could be also discussed why people do like they do... like changing female NPCs to male or think why in some culture its not possible to have "this or that". only thing i don't like, is when such discussion turns into state where one feels that somebody is claiming their system being better/more believable/more realistic... and i mean it in general, not only in this issue... before this whole changing of opinions i didn't even thought the contradiction of having female or male NPC in some occasion... i use some ready settings and also write adventures myself. NOW when i think of it, i can see that i have intentionally "make" some NPCs for being certain sex or race even (now that's another interesting point too.. the race question!) my style to make and run game is, is to take into account in some culminationpoints how my players would react, like how would they try to get information, to whom to talk etc. so i have always readily thought, how NPCs would react towards each PC and then i think the PCs personality, race, sex and possibly education, how well he/she could manage that situation. it has happened that whole game has had a different turn, when a "wrong" or "right" PC has approached NPCs. when i run game, i emphasis such things as interactive communication between PCs and NPCs, roleplaying (for example i use the personality traits system of Northern reaches GAZ even for other settings) and for my own pleasure i always try to create dramatic situations... i actually try to write "plot" with several variations for my each game and most enjoyable situations are, when my players suprise me, so that i can have challenge to during playing (like: how the heck they thought that??? oops.. now i really need to think up something and QUICK!) my weakness is defenately that im not very keen on details, like making everything very detailed or realistic... but the groups i have, like me being spontaneous and the way i am so luckily they forgive that. i dont keep record how long torch burns when party enters a dark dungeon, but i certainly wont let anyone either hold torch, drink potion and same time hit with sword simultaneously.hmm.. now im getting off the topic again... so, i confess i sometimes have intentionally male or female NPC, but why i do it, is because the possible reactions between NPC and PCs, not because i'd have thought that man/woman can't possible be in certain positions or do some kind of things.. well not knowingly anyway. ofcourse it's bit unlikely to have maleNPC giving birth and asking help from party of PCs.... so the unwritten laws of life itself and then the current gameworld naturally affects in the 1st place. i've also, when new PCmember joins the group, made other PCs check their reactions towards the newcomer. such procedure i made so that PCs use their personality traits, react-rolls (i check those and also use some bonus/penalty depending the case, players roll themselves though)and then they should just think and roleplay... then also the question of sex, race and profession can became important and create very interesting eletricity inside the PC-group. sometimes these situations develop even a small adventure itself or sometimes i've intend them to come such. (same with NPCs who will spend lot of time with PCs) i don't expect that all PCs get along perfectly or trust eachother 100%. few my players even have 2 PCs who aren't actually in good or close terms and thats always a test for good roleplay if one is playing "against" oneself. i think i better stop now, but i would be interested to hear more what are those things you others emphasis when you run games or create NPCs etc. i'm always hunting good ideas :o) and then one more thing, comments from Hvard and mortus > > Nice story about the mosquito though. > >I didnt know the females were the nasty ones, but I love Larson :) > > > aren't they always ;-) > mortus. as much as males witty and original with such statements ;oP (was that femaleishly-nasty enough for you????) my meaning with that mosquito-story wasn't just to reveal another nasty seecret of females (oh, by the way, have you ever heard what black widow and praying mantiss females do to their spouses and even while mating!!!???..uhmm.. maybe better not to tell, so you men can sleep better...) but as i said in that first mail, i'm sure you caught the point without me explaining it (even you men?) ...me and my poisonous fangs will go on reading the rest mails in MML -- KATRI "If it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be: but as it isn't, it ain't. Yup. The above is true. I've been reading your NPC posts (and loving them), but never said a word on list. I will now...keep them coming! By the way Mischa, don't forget to send one to the Tome of Mystara for the issue #4 contest. The top 3 most favorite NPCs (chosen by the readers) will be drawn (by me). If you haven't sent one over to them, you still have 2 days ;). John ===== Rule #65. If I must have computer systems with publically available terminals, the maps they display of my complex will have a room clearly marked as the Main Control Room. That room will be the Execution Chamber. There's your communist society. Uh, I guess it's about time we disagreed, after agreeing on major issues for several months. Communistic society can be seen at work in something like the Bruderhof or the Kibbutzim - everyone works hard, everyone benefits. It doesn't work on a large scale (at least from the evidence we have at hand) but it's hardly as sinister a notion as you suggest. It's (at its best) an attempt to reward those who do the hard work - which perfectly matches dwarven values. In practice, I don't think it encourages either laziness or the work ethic to a higher degree than capitalism - those are characteristics of human nature independent of the economic system in usage in the land. > Back in 1994, Al Gore called Oliver North "the colonel of untruth" Well, if anyone is an expert on "untruth", it's Mr. Gore. I agree here. When picking up communist clichs for a FRPG, it's usually the Soviet-type society what comes to head. But, as we have a fantasy environment, it would be interesting to develop some society following those "Ideallist Communism and Socialism" ideas of the XIXth Century and before, just like Saint-Simon, or even Plato, those societies which never turned into real political regimes in RW. Those "no private property", work-based regimes could work wonders for isolated regions in a campaign for PCs to stumble into and run into trouble, and could also be a revolutionary shock in established countries. I could see it in Minrothad. It's already a syndicracy, anyway, and quite monopolistic. I could see a revolution in Minrothad abolishing private property and setting up an equitative distribution of richness... Just for Minrothad guilders, of course, foreigners and international trade would be free game... And our beloved (irony meant) Karimari, as presented in CoM, they are quite near no-property communism, IIRC. I could see an interesting twist for "working class claims" in Savage Baronies... something like "cynnabril for the People" could make a shock. All in all, I see dwarves and Minrothad as the most likely groups to develop a possible "fantasy socialism", as they give big importance to production in structuring society and political structures. Glantri, IMO, is something more like RW EU: all those factions, boards and societies always looked to me as a fantasy caricature of Europe, lots of political parties, syndicates, coallitions to ever take a single joint decision. Plus, the background is explicitly Europe... Perhaps Bruce may cast some light on his "sources" for Glantri as in GAZ3. Retameron Antonic (who was a major NPC along with his wife, the wizardess Halia, in the X12: Skarda's Mirror adventure). It was never specified what happened after that, but since K:KoA suggests by what you quote about the Hin invasion of the Black Eagle Barony, which also took place in 1010 AC, this seems like a typo to me. On a similar note, I've found another problem of the same sort. In the 'Sound of Madness' adventure in the K:KoA set, the PCs are hired by Aleena Halaran to go to a village in the mountain and find out what has happened to a druid named Bertrak. The adventure makes no secret of Aleena's love for Bertrak, and she actually admits as much. Since this is in the K:KoA set, the adventure takes place in 1012 AC, yet according to PWA2 for 1011 AC (p.187/188) Aleena was married the year before to an adventurer named Dmitri Yurevich - considering the importance the Church of Karameikos puts on 'cleansing the soul' this doesn't look too good for Aleena, since she is a priest! IMC I just moved the adventure forward in time so that it took place 1004 AC, so that Aleena had indeed been in love with Bertrak but eventually come to terms with the fact that they were too different - something which the adventure also hints at. I would thus assume that Jeff Grubb didn't do all his homework when he wrote about Zandra Sulanov, the paladin minister of war, and Bertrak the druid, or else he was let down by those who should have checked those things out for him. This is unfortunate since I kind of like most of Jeff Grubb's work. He designed the Spelljammer rules and his FR comic books and novels are very amusing - if you want funny look at his Dragonlance novel, Lord Toede - almost as silly and funny as some of Pratchett's Discworld stories :) - The Stalker Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 20:50:16 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Mischa E Gelman Subject: Re: Dwarven revolution (was Alphatian citizens) In-Reply-To: <000b01bfca95$451b0600$5f14ebc3@uchicago.edu> MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: QUOTED-PRINTABLE > I agree here. Yep. Fantasy world's for fantasy, not a replay of history. Maybe in Mystara, socialism worked. Maybe capitalism worked too. There's a first for everything. > Those "no private property", work-based > regimes could work wonders for isolated regions Just thought of one with no private property, but not work-based - the Hollow World Makai.=20 Some notes on dwarves, welfare and economics:=20 30% of Rockhome dwarves are poor and despised. There obviously seems to be some anti-poor attitudes among the dwarves, but that could be more related to the farmer role of this group than anything else. Anyhow, it's something a socialist could play off of. Another 30% are struggling. OTOH, Dwarven culture is fairly egalitarian. The family supplies food, clothing and, well, supplies. After the 35% federal income tax, the rest of the money goes back to the workers. So, dwarves take care of their own. This ain't a laissez-faire, social darwinist, dog-eat-dog world. It's a very good economic system, mixing the good of socialism with the good of capitalism and trashing the bad parts of both - the model for a good mixed economy. Now, what really got me was the GAZ1 depiction of dwarves, also by Aaron Allston (one of the best Mystara writers, but his work adds so many contradictions, given the level of detail) - NO dwarf is poor among the Karameikan dwarves. "[T]hey tend to look after their own more than humans do." The family doesn't provide for adventurers, but everyone else is cared for.=20 So - the dwarves do have a cultural divide between rich and poor, but only when dwarves have to farm - so the divide is really agriculture vs. everything else. Depending on your perspective, it might be easier or harder for socialism to take root. Easier - well, the dwarves already are fairly communal in how they use their wealth. The necessities of life are provided for you. If you believe socialism comes in "Creeping communism" forms (to use John Birch logic - extremists love the slippery slope arguments) then these are the easiest targets.=20 Harder - well, the dwarves already are fairly communal in how they use their wealth. The necessities of life are provided for you. So - why rock the boat? Why demand more when you're already taken care of? What incentive is there to rebel? For the Marxist types who say the revolution comes at the darkest moment, the dwarven rebellion will never come. I think I subscribe more to the latter train of thought - there isn't much class divide or inequality for the commies to bitch and moan about. If you want to use the former for your campaign, as part of the commie propoganda, feel free to adapt it. - Mischa If thy brother be waxen poor and his means fail with thee; then thou shalt uphold him: (even if he is) as a stranger and a settler shall he live with thee - Leviticus 25:35 (with paranthetical remarks being added interpretation by Rashi)=20 ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 18:25:39 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Andrew Theisen Subject: Re: Mystara Product Reviews? Thus, hear is my attempt to adjust those ages to fit the available information: Human: PHB gives 15+1d4 for starting age and 90+2d20 for maximum age. These figures are reasonably compatible with the Glantrian minimum age for casting wizard spells safely (age 16) and with the maximum human age in the D&D Rules Cyclopedia (95+2d12), so we may as well use those figures except in those nations where other age ranges are given (as is the case in Karameikos and the Atruaghin Clans). However, since no nation other than Glantri has wizards younger than 16, the basic PHB roll should be used for all non-Glantrian wizards. Half-Elf: PHB gives starting age of 15+1d6 and maximum age of 125+3d20. There is no problem with the starting age, but the maximum age should be a bit older to allow for the fact that Mystaran elves are longer lived than AD&D elves. Since the Dragon article about them gives them the life span of a halfling (200 years), we should raise the base maximum age from 125 to 200, giveing a roll of 200+3d20 for maximum age and age categories as an AD&D gnome. Halfling: In this case the AD&D figures actually make more sense than the D&D ones, as the halfling NPCs in the PWAs actually look their human ages or at most ten years younger. Thus, halflings must have a lifespan considerably shorter than the 200 years suggested in the D&D Rules Cyclopedia. Furthermore, by combining information from Gaz 8 and the PWAs we discover that the youngest Sheriff of the Five Shires was 8th level in 1000 AC at the ripe old age of 22 -- which would imply a starting age comparable to that of humans. So let's try 15+1d8 (Sildil rolled low!) as a starting age and the PHB figure of 100+1d% for maximum age. Gnome: The only gnomish NPC for whom an exact age is given is Jan Hembeek of Oostdok, who is described in the PWA as a middle-aged gnome at the ripe old age of 44. Obviously Mystaran gnomes are no longer lived than humans -- so we should given them the starting and maximum ages of humans. At best, we could decide that they most resemble Stout halflings with magical talent and give them the age figures for Mystaran halflings -- but we should not give them any better longevity. Dwarf: The three main dwarven subraces (Rockhome, Kogolor, and Moulder) should be discussed separately. Rockhome dwarves are the shortest lived of the three subraces. Gaz 6 gives very precise age parameters for them: 35-40 as a recommended starting age, average life span of 200, and maximum life span of 275. That gives us 34+1d6 for starting age and approximately 195+4d20 for maximum age. Also according to Gaz 6, dwarves are middle-aged at 100 and old at 150 and thus should be venerable at 200. Kogolor dwarves are the "unmodified" dwarves of the Blackmoor era and thus the only ones who could possibly follow the D&D Rules Cyclopedia guidelines that give a maximum age of 400 (or 375+1d% to be precise). In the PWA, the king of the Kogolors is middle-aged at 108, which suggests faster aging than the maximum age of 400 would suggest. For these dwarves the base age of AD&D dwarves (40+5d6) and maximum age of AD&D gnomes (200+3d%) seem to work best. Moulder dwarves are very long lived even by dwarven standards, with a maximum lifespan of 400-600 years. For their age statistics I had to consult the Forgotten Realms supplement "Cormanthyr", in which the Drow were found to have reasonable age stats: 60+5d6 for base age and 350+3d% for maximum age. Age categories would match those of AD&D elves. Finally we get to the elves. While they have even more subraces than the dwarves, we actually need to consider only two cases: aquatic elves and all of the rest. Non-aquatic elves have a maximum life span of 800 years (rolled as 750+2d%). According to Gaz 5, starting age should be in the 20-80 range, which would suggest a roll of 20+4d20 for starting age. Elves may safely cast wizard spells at age 25 and are capable of reproducing at about the midpoint of adolescence, or around the age of 60. Thus, an elven generation on Mystara is about 80 years, and it is thus quite reasonable for a 180+ year old elf to have grown children or even be a grandparent even though he or she still looks young to human eyes. Mystaran elves should be considered middle-aged at 400, old at 600, and venerable at 800+. Shadow elves typically hold back adventurers until they reach at least the age of 110, so the standard elven starting age of 100+5d6 works just fine for them. However, with this extra delay shadow elf adventurers should begin play at no less than 2d level and possibly receive a few bonus skills as well. That brings us to the aquatic elves, who are even longer lived than other Mystaran elves with a maximum life span of 1000 years (rolled as 900+2d%). With their greater longevity they should begin play somewhat older than standard elves, so the Cormanthyr figure for aquatic elves of 75+3d6 years seems to be a good starting point. Anyway -- do my figures seem to give unreasonable results for any known NPCs? ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 01:25:37 EDT Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Wizards Shopper Subject: Family sizes for Mystaran demi-humans MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In the process of reviewing the Surivival Kits for the Mystara3E project I noted the following family sizes for various races: Elf, Gnome: 1d2 Dwarf: 1d3 Half-Elf: 1d4 Human: 1d6 Halfling: 1d10 Even if you include the rules for larger family sizes (10% chance of additional roll if maximum is rolled; check a maximum of twice for humans and once for all other races), it seems obvious that family sizes for elves, dwarves and gnomes are well below replacement rate -- and since these races apparently take longer to mature than humans, they could really be in trouble if those statistics are accurate. So I will propose the following revisions to these statistics: General: Instead of a flat 10% chance, a second roll of the family size die permits a roll for additional siblings. Thus, if the die for family size is 1d6, then a second roll of 6 means that instead of 6 children the family has 1d6+6 or 7-12 children. Human: No change to basic rolls, as humans already reproduce like rabbits. Under the general change the chance of a human couple having 18 children (maximum) rises from 1/21600 to 1/7776. Half-Elf: For the mating of a human with an elf, roll is only 1d2 (to reflect reduced fertility from racial differences). For mating of half-elf with human or elf, roll is 1d3. For mating of two half-elves, roll is 1d4. For truly bizarre combinations (such as human/dwarf or dwarf/gnome), assume that any such child is an only child. Halfling: The 1d10 roll gives that race an average family size greater than that of most humans, yet there is no evidence that halflings can outbreed humans. However, since large family sizes should remain theoretically possible, they should get the same 1d6 roll (and the same potential three rolls) as humans. Gnome: Mystaran gnomes have a relatively short life span and also are barely holding on in the few areas where they are found. Thus, their family size roll should be set at 1d4 (maximum of two rolls) to enable them to maintain their numbers but expand very slowly if at all. Dwarf: Rockhome has a high population that has grown steadily, dwarves are monogamous, and 40% of their number never marry, which means that those who do marry must take up the slack for those who don't. Family size should thus be set at 1d8 (maximum one roll). Elf: On Mystara elves are anything but a dying race -- despite tremendous losses in battle, they are able to maintain their numbers and even grow when conditions are peaceful enough. Family size should be checked on 1d4 (maximum two rolls). In addition, if only one roll is made, check for children of each parent (50% chance of 1d4 children by a previous mate). Since elf marriages typically last about one human lifetime, the average elf will have 1d4 children from each of two marriages. So -- for those of you who are mathmatically inclined -- do you see any nations being under or over populated by these numbers? ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 01:54:37 EDT Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Wizards Shopper Subject: Mystaran monster PCs MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit My last idea for tonight: >From a comparison of the available data in the Creature Crucibles and similar sources, it appears that the logical minimum HD total for any monster PC is half the adult total, rounded down. Thus, a monster whose adult form has 9 HD should begin play with no less than 4 HD. However, such characters receive penalties to their initial ability scores according to age category below 0 (young adult) as follows: -5: Str -4, Int -4, Wis -4, Dex -2, Con -2, Cha -2 -4: Str -4, Int -3, Wis -3, Dex -1, Con -2, Cha -2 (+3) -3: Str -3, Int -2, Wis -2, Dex -1, Con -2, Cha -1 (+4) -2: Str -2, Int -1, Wis -2, Dex 0, Con -1, Cha -1 (+4) -1: Str -1, Int 0, Wis -1, Dex 0, Con -1, Cha 0 (+4) For monsters of 10 HD or less, age category is determined by subtracting base HD from starting HD. For monsters with more HD, multiply base HD by appropriate fraction (10 + (age minus) / 10, rounded down) to determine HD at which each age category is reached. Ajust ability scores appropriately when advancing from one age category to the next. Under this scheme, PCs may begin a 1 HD if they are members of races with base HD of 3-. For creatures with more HD, starting HD must be greater, although age categories may still be applied backwards to fill out the levels. The highest HD level for which a 1st level character is possible is one with 6 HD, with stats worked out as follows: Level 1: 3 HD, age category -5 Level 2: 3 HD, age category -4 Level 3: 3 HD, age category -3 Level 4: 4 HD, age category -2 Level 5: 5 HD, age category -1 Level 6: 6 HD, age category 0 Level 7+: 6 HD, age category 0, level 1+ in any class If the DM determines that insufficient time has elapsed for a character to advance in age category, then the character may remain at the same HD level but advance in a character class instead. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 02:53:41 EDT Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Wizards Shopper Subject: Re: Question about K:KoA MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 2000-05-30 8:28:07 PM Eastern Daylight Time, alphatian@ANGELFIRE.COM writes: << This is all very true, since that is precisely what K:KoA says, but much as people may hate me for this, I do feel the need to point out that on p.205/206 of the 1010AC PWA1 says that Hyraksos' successor is Baron (?) Retameron demands that action be taken against the Hin, but when Stefan refuses he offers his resignation, which is accepted. In AC11, "The Book of Wondrous Inventions", a gnome named Burton Bladderwick invented his "manapult", more fully known as "Bladderwick's Human Catapult". Duke Stefan attempted to utilize this invention during the siege of Krakatos, with miserably fatal results. The players part show how dwarves make magical items. I didn't like the way they must expand XP to do so, but it was fairly simple. I think what I'll do IMC is to have Retameron be the Minister of War for a year, then realize that it doesn't work for him, and then choose a successor from the 'short list of potentials' that Hyraksos left behind and chose Zandra Sulanov. In fact, p.63 of K:KoA (explorer's guide) says that she 'was on his "short list" presented to King Stefan of replacements when he retired". That seems to suggest that Hyraksos didn't die, but just went into retirement, which we know is not true. But we could also interpret it to mean when Retameron went into 'retirement' as Minister of War. That's twisting what the book says, I know, but it's a more satisfying explanation IMHO. >>On a similar note, I've found another problem of the same sort. And in a fantasy setting, we can use ideas that look great on paper but are bad in practice. (And, as I mentioned, on a small, voluntary scale like kibbutzim, communism works - it's only on a forced, large scale where it has failed.) > Communism in > theory is basically Christianity without Christ (I hope my fellows won't > take offense at that, just try to understand what I'm saying). Wow - that is a nice take on it. Never thought of it that way. (And I could never understood why Communism hates religion, since both support basically the same economic code.) > Like the > quote from GK Chesterton that Mischa is fond of, "Christianity ..." Oh heck, > what was it? Heh - I'm fond of lots of Chesterton quotes - I've probably used dozens on this list alone. I think what you were thinking of is "The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult;and left untried." Looking back at my used quotes collection, I've had LOTS on religion and economics. > Anyway, edited a little, it could read like this, "Communism wasn't tried > and found wanting, it was not tried..." Yeah, I think paraphrasing the GKC quote works. FWIW, GKC was a socialist at one point but later became a staunch critic of capitalism (since it creates inequality and doesn't reward work properly) and socialism (in practice more than theory, due to the role of government, but he also attacked the theory due to his reliance on private property) - his economic system was termed distributism (and has also been followed by Dorothy Day and Hilaire Belloc most notably I think - Belloc helped found the idea). It called for a wider distribution of private property - so, communist in calling for equality of wealth, but with everyone being lord of their own domain. A nation of family farms and small business, when you boil it down. (Heck, when you get down to it, it's similar to what Adam Smith wanted.) > I would go on further to say that Communism, as it exists on paper, is not > possible due to human nature. I get the feeling that when the Messiah comes, our economic system may look alot more like Communism. I have no idea, but it'd be my best guess. > Though Mischa mentioned it as a disagreement > between myself and him, I wouldn't totally agree. Nope, sounds like we're following similar trains of thought. I simply was relying on the theory and you on the practice. > difference, but I see dwarven society as much more like "Capitalism the way > it should work" rather than "Communism the way it should work". I still will go by what I said before, it's sort of the good of capitalism and the good of socialism mixed together, without the bad of either (to any serious degree). > Either one is a fantasy... Vast discrepancy betweeen populations there. >> Do you think the elven figures are too high or too low? Keep in mind that from another post I estimated an elven generation at around 80 years, so even with the family sizes given elven populations will grow rather slowly. We also need to allow for a certain number of elves not reproducing at all. The "canonical" family size of 1-2 is below replacement level. The above numbers reflect the number of born childs or the number of childs alive after child low age mortality? >> Good question. My best assumption is that they are meant to represent those children that lived through at least the first year. I suspect that most of the demi-human races should have a much lower infant mortality rate than humans, though -- otherwise there could be a lot of dead elf infants and children. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 23:55:03 EDT Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Wizards Shopper Subject: Re: Question about K:KoA MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 2000-05-31 7:22:20 PM Eastern Daylight Time, alphatian@ANGELFIRE.COM writes: << While this is certainly possible, it seems rather out-of-character for Retameron IMHO.
