I'd say that Kagyar would have modified a sufficient number of dwarves after the Blackmoor explosion to create a sufficent gene pool. Also, his primary reason for modifying them was to make them more resistant to radiation, so he may have tinkered with their genetic structure to make them more resistant to mutation, and incidently to inbreeding (up to a point). According to Gaz 5, only a limited number of clans have Trees of Life. Even in Alfheim, there are several (minor) clans who dont have a Tree of Life. I think it makes more sense to follow the information in Gaz 5 than in the D&D rules since the rulebooks werent really setting specific. That doesnt mean that the ToL cannot protect these clans as a result of them living near the large gathering of ToLs. However, this would mean that the Norwold elves arent protected, but this is not really a big deal. Overall your explaination makes sense to me. Hvard Haavard R. However, this would mean that the Norwold elves arent protected, but this is not really a big deal. >> After I posted this theory yet another possibility occurred to me -- and this one is fully consistent with both the genetics described in Gaz 5 and the few half-elves specifically mentioned in 2E products. What is interesting is that every specifically identified half-elf in those products is female, unless one of them has a male half-elf that I missed (Engledoc in Gaz 5 doesn't count -- Gaz 5 says that he is a true elf even though both of his parents are "human"). By this theory all "elven" and "human" traits are carried on the X chromosome, with the Y chromosome having only a very minor effect. Normal elves would by XE XE and XE YE, while normal humans would be XH XH and XH YH. If you cross a male human with a female elf, the offspring are half XE XH (female half-elves, called "humans" by most elves) and half XE YH (male elves, as the YH chromosome does not affect racial characteristics). If you cross a male elf with a female human, the offspring are half XH XE (female half-elves again), and half XH YE (male humans, in the unlikely event that they are not stillborn -- these stillbirths are magically caused by proximity to Trees of Life to reduce the number of humans who cannot possibly pass on any elven characteristics but who are being raised by elves). Female half-elves do not breed true, as they must mate with either elves or humans to produce a very mixed set of children -- the sons are invariably half elven and half human (with the human sons usually being stillborn if the father is an elf), while the daughters are half half-elves like their mothers and half members of their father's race. The only male half-elves are the descendants of those people on the Savage Coast who were magically modified to carry characteristics intermediate between elf and human on their X chromosomes -- and they tend to breed true because those mixed characteristics are dominant and result in non-half-elf children only when matched recessive traits manage to manifest themselves. This theory has one major weakness in that it permits absolutely no male half-elves outside of the Eusdrians and their descendants. All one would have to do to shoot down this theory is name a single male half-elf from any 2E Mystara source who cannot plausibly be considered as having Eusdrian ancestry. So very many combinations are possible, and I just would not support the theory of a mix mating giving only 1 sex offspring, whereas every kind of genetic problem (from the physical impossibility of mix-mating up to the infertility or any other genetic desease of the offsprings) are perfectly natural possibilities, IMO. Thus, even with equal fertility they would be no more likely to have 40-50 children per family than humans would be to have 20-25 children. Still, they would not need to be quite that fertile to have a steady increase in population -- and to get to the present day numbers from a "creation date" of only a few thousand years ago, a fairly decent population doubling rate would be required. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 03:55:08 EDT Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Wizards Shopper Subject: Re: Elf clans and half-elves -- another theory MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 2000-06-23 10:22:24 AM Eastern Daylight Time, IBON@GMX.DE writes: << con: i think, that the racial information not bound on the X chromosome and both information are equal strong. so there exsist female and male H-Elven. >> Reference Gaz 5 -- its paragraph about "half-elves" is my basis for making elf and human characteristics sex linked, as well as for the Y chromosome having just enough influence to make the XH YE combination lethal for some reason. In the meantime, here's another NPC - again, please point any inconsistencies/errors and feel free to offer other comments (off-list if irrelevant, of course). Trydion Datrios History: Trydion was born in a small town in Kerendas 37 years ago. From his youngest days, he was a devoted follower of Halav, eagerly assisting the clerics with menial tasks at the local temple. This devotion impressed the priests, who trained Trydion to become one of their own, resulting in his becoming an ordained cleric by age 15. He married his childhood sweetheart at age 19, and they went out to explore the world and live a life of adventure. They joined numerous parties and righted wrongs along the eastern coast of Brun. All seemed to be well with his life until a traumatic experience 6 years ago. At that time, Trydion's current party happened upon a hivebrood lair and a number of them were captured. The cleric was rescued by one of his companions and healed, but it was too late for his wife, who had already metamorphosized. While he escaped alive, his life was irrevocably changed. Since that experience, he has renounced his faith and has lived a life of mourning. Personality: Trydion is in a state of seeming eternal desperation. No sign of humor or comradery is evident in his dealings with others, and his sole aim is to sustain himself. Once a devoted crusader for Halav and a fairly cheerful soul, his personality has undergone a dramatic transformation. He will rant and rave against Halav, and about the deity abandons those who put their faith in him. Such speech, accompanied by his antisocial outlook, wins him few friends in Thyatis, and as a result, he wanders about the countryside a good deal. Appearance: A 6'2", 180# man, Trydion is still a very imposing figure. Once possessing average looks, he now looks quite frightening, due to the somewhat insect-like appearance that ensures physical scars to add to his emotional and psychological ones. Trydion still carries his old mace, but has no other possessions of note. Combat Notes: He is a 7th-level cleric of Halav (defrocked). AC 8 (chitinous skin); hp 40; at 1; D 2d4+2 (mace+1, skilled, strength bonus); save C7; ML 8; Al N (formerly L); S 13, I 8, W 12, D 9, Co 15, Ch 5. Languages: Thyatian, Common, Neutral. General Skills: Honor Halav (W+1), Singing (Ch), Fire-Building (I), Muscle (S) (the former two are no longer practiced) DM Notes: The priesthood of Halav is not sinister enough to hire assassins to permanently quiet Trydion, but they are distressed at his current state and at his criticism of their order. Some of his former associates seek a cure, as it would resolve both problems in one fell swoop. PC clerics of Halav would especially be called upon to help with this cause. They also would be likely targets of one of Trydion's speeches. His stories can also help lead the PCs to the hivebrood lands, a possible source of adventure or magical research. Or Trydion could merely serve a nuisance for travelers in Thyatian lands...of course, the more sympathetic of those travelers may try to help out the unfortunate soul. - Mischa Now playing: "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder A person who possesses the goods of this world and closes his heart to those who are in need, is he not in some way a murderer if a person in need dies? - Jean Vinier (source: "A Disturbing Peace" by Vince Scott Eirene) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 22:12:32 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Mischa E Gelman Subject: Re: New to the List... Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Dear fellow Mystarians, I hope you don't mind but I have some questions on alittle idea I have for a campaign. I have written about a cult I use for my campaign (The Black Rose Cult), who are a Lawful Evil Cult. It started of with someone receiving visions of death and he heard a voice saying that he should do what he was told by this voice becaue he he was the chosen one (you know just the usual stuff). These vision and the voice came from an Immortal called Thanatos (so he said). He started looking for followers and people did follow him. The voice told him to hold (blood) sacrifices in order for this being to be able to roam the earth once more, but now in mortal form but with Immortal powers (and an added bonus: he can't die). There is a quicker way to bring this being back to earth and that is by doing mass sacrifices. If they instigate a war and they dedicate this massacre to this being, they will be able to speed up this process. People started to do these things they were told by the Immortal's prophet. In other words a sect was formed. After a certain time, when the prophet saw that things were going they way the Immortal "told" him it should go, he said that it was time for him to "retire". He went to the woods, and lived and (presummably) died there. The only problem is (and the followers of the sect don't know this) that this prophet is an immortal in mortal form. The Immortals of Enthropy decided a while ago that some of them would go down to the earth to start up sects like this all over the place, which worked. These sects that were started, don't know about eachother existence. They don't know that Immortals set up these sect in such away that total war will start (because they have "told" in the "prophecies" that these wars should start at the same time, which will happen). This will cause death, chaos and destruction in Mystara which is exactly what they want, because this way (and by followers of other Immortals will die) they will advance their own sphere. Now, I have send this before to the list and people said that it would be fun if the Immortals would be tricked. I thought of the following and I hope you will comment on this because I don't know whether this will work. Because there is so much evil in the world at that time, I thought that his would be a good moment for some of the Domain Lords (in the Ravenloft realm) to be interested in this place. They have found a way to open a porch to this realm (maybe by some mad necromancer??) in order to try to corupt this realm, which, of course will work. This happens slowly (maybe an increase in madness, more evil beings roaming the earth (vampires, werebeings etc., more evil deeds being commited; in general an change in attitude in the KW). I would like to incoorperate some of the things that happen in Ravenloft (people changing because of bad and evil deeds etc.). I think it would be a nice idea not to bring the PCs to Ravenloft but to slowly bring some elements to Mystara (and, if these element like it here, slowly change this realm to an expansion of the Ravenloft domain, in order for the Domain Lords to start corupting another realm). In other words I would like to start a gothic horror setting in Mystara with (some of)the Ravenloft rules. I have a problem, however, because I don't know whether the Immortals know about the existence of demi-plans, and if they do whether they will powerful enough to stop beings from these plane entering the Mystara plane, and if not do you think they will united in order to try to stop this (this will cause problems because the Immortals will have a hard time uniting because of the WotI). Also, if they are powerful enough, maybe the Immortals of Death will activily seek to open a porch between these two realms. Do you think this is a possible scenario or is it just completly impossible? I think it would be quite fun to try to achieve this and slowly have the PCs find out that something is completly wrong (this would be more fun, because most of the PCs have an evil allignment, so they will be in lots of trouble before they realise that something is wrong). Well, anyway, I hope I will receive comment, (hopefully) hints and tips about this idea. Thanks. And, not to send an email with some content, I remember someone, a long time ago, mentioning the fact that Thyatis City was, in the maps, much smaller than it should be for the size of its population. I am not sure someone has made any detailed work on the city (I have found just a general description of the city in Shawn's site). Anyway, I have an idea of why that happens,so here it is. It still needs work on the historical details, crossing the references, but my gaming material is too messy to find out all I need right now. Box of Distorting Dimensions The origins of this artifact go back to the last days of Blackmoor and it was built with a powerful mixture of magic and technology. In the last years of the empire, the population was getting bigger and bigger and living space was a growing problem, specially living space close to one's work and other commodities was getting more expensive each time. Some scientists working together with wizards finally arrived to the final solution to the problem, something that would have revolutionized blackmoorian society, if Blackmoor hadn't blown up 2 years after the first prototype was ready. What the box does (after been connected to some region, a task that even most intelligent mages of present time would find extremelly hard to perform) is to allow its user to alter the topological properties of a region, shrinking or expanding its inner space, without altering its borders. This way, a keep that seems small from outside can be huge when you enter it or a much bigger city than the region would allow can exist in a small area. One of these boxes (a quite powerful one) was found by a thyatian adventurer (I can't find the reference to whom among the first thyatians emperors succeeded in the Immortal Path later, she (I think it was she) could be the one) at the time of the independence war. After sometime studying the artifact, she learned how to use it and tuned it to the city. One of the unexpected effects was that the alphatians could no longer cast their magics from aboard their flying ships against land targets, unless they were flying very low over the ground. Above the city, the space reverts to normal and trying to target something in the ground would mean solving the complicated equations of curved space, the higher the ship is, the more difficul it is to get a decent target, even if all you are trying to do is to let some rocks fall on the Imperial Palace. And flying close tothe surface is not an easy task. Spatial distortions cause all sorts of weird stuff and unless you know some unmarked sky roads (the ones the Retebius Air Fleet use), the ship or creature will almost certainly lose control and crash. The biggest the ship or the creature the more difficult to navigate there (Navigation or other apropriate check at -4 penalty for pegasi, -6 for medium dragons, -8 for skyships or other huge creatures, unless you use one of the sky roads). Thanks to this effect, the alphatians have always had a hard time invading Thyatis City itself. Another power of the artifact is that, for its most knowledgeable users, it allows them to create shortcuts inside the area. Therefore, there are controlled streets in Thyatis City that can take a legion from one extreme of the city to the other one just walking a few blocks. All the streets with this property (all of them above ground, that is) are controlled by the military, as they are vital to the defenses of the city. However, the artifact was lost in 732 AC and spent sometime in the undergrounds of the city, where a crazy mage has used it to create shortcuts and even portals to other dimensions and eras that were closed and sealed by an adventuring party later, but that remain fully operational. It was only recovered in the last alphatian invasion, when a gladiator stumbled on it while trying to find a way to fight the alphatians. The name of the gladiator was Thrainkell Torson and the rest is the history of how he managed to defeat the invaders and become Thincol Torion. The artifact, however, does drain the strenght of its owner. Thincol managed to avoid its delibitating effects thanks to his personal power for a while and later, thanks to his mistress, Anya. When she decided not to fall her advices, she stopped protecting him and he decayed slowly after the WotI. More than one of these boxes are rumoured to exist, of varied powers. Comments, anyone? My campaign is set in 1013, and I had some thoughts on how life in the Shires has changed, now that the Black Eagle is gone. The natural assumption would be that smuggling/piracy would have dropped off some, as trade through the Barony of Halag would now be possible, giving the hin an overland route to sell to their biggest trading partner, Karameikos. But IMC, things are still very unsettled in Halag in 1013 and I believe this is what canon says, too, right? Would the hin be involved in pacifying the Barony of Halag, or would they simply stick to their sea-based trade with Karameikos? Given his notoreity there, would Bargle steer clear of the Shires, or is he arrogant enough to assume he can hide there if he chooses to? What was your big problem with it? If it's a problem with halflings in general, that's one thing, but I found it to be the most plausible of the gazetteers/boxed sets I've read so far. The idea that there could be a functioning, healthy society in a fantasy world that doesn't rely on supremely beneficient members of the Karameikos family suits me very well. Sure, it's a house of cards: The Master of Hule or Thyatis or whatever could probably conquer the country a lot easier than Greenwood says, but I rather like the idea that this nation is a quiet backwater and a breadbasket for the Known World. (Of course, some of the same traits in the write-up of Ierendi strike me as too silly, so it's not like I'm in love with the idea of happy fantasy kingdoms in general.) >It depends on how open you want the relations to be between Karameikos and the Shires. It also provides a nice alternative to the traditional thieves guild structures so many halfling characters are allied with. Being a crewman of a pirate vessel has so much more panache. How long does everyone think it would take for adventurers to pacify Halag? Have the MA come up with a new baron ever, or is poor old Milo still clinging to the reins there? I've thought that might be an interesting long-term campaign goal for my current group of players' characters, after the initial arc revolving around Reaper is over. >It's probably safe to assume that Bargle has made a few enemies in Glantri over the years. Glantri... Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed I forgot to ask something in my last post about a gate opening to Mystara and the powers of Ravenloft corrupting the realm. In Glantri: Kingdom of Magic it says that Glantri once was a happy nation but after the WotI, it has changed into something darker, the people are less happy and they rush home on the streets (or something like that). To me it seems like something really bad is happening or has happened there, but I wonder what that is. I think I could use this to link up my idea in the previous post, because I think I read somewhere that more evil beings were encountered (I am right, or just imaginening things?). Well, anyway I hope some one can inform about this things that is going in in Glantri and why people are so afraid. A meteor has crushed the southern provinces of glantri , the humanoids from the broken lands have invaded the resulting crater (resulting from the meteor crash). a plague has ensued the war and with the lack of clerical power the death toll has been catastrophic. even with alphatia gone, glantri is no more the powerful nation it was before the war. internal struggle for power tend to diminish its strength. now , here comes Synn, the Night dragon , who becomes a princess of glantri and who starts her its dirty play in the glantrian politics....not to mention the legions of monsters which still remains after the alphatian attack... maybe Glantri doesn't need a gate toward some nasty plane to be opened right away... What was your big problem with it? (snip) I don't think there's a problem with it, it's just that nothing much happens in the Shires, so it's a pretty boring place... Note that most, if indeed not all, the other gazetteers are filled with lots in internal strife and politics and villains, but in the Shires all the villains are foreigners such as the evil Glantrian wizards or the evil, evil Black Eagle Baron. It would have been more interesting if there had been nasty halflings, too, but no, the book only supports all the boring archetypes that define halflings as nothing but peaceful couch-potatoes... :( I agree that this book is well written (it's yet another gazetteer that I've read a good deal in the past but don't own myself...), but Greenwood should have included a gallery of more interesting halflings, methinks. I mean, yes it's nice that the halflings can have a quiet, peaceful society where things work the way they should, but it's not very interesting. I would say that even the author thought so, for why else would he have made all the foreigners mentioned the bad guys while even the halfling pirates are rather 'nice' by comparison... Don't get me wrong, I kind of like this gazetteer too, but I think it could have been a lot more interesting. I'm looking forward to that 'Dark Shire' thing somebody mentioned... > How long does everyone think it would take for adventurers to pacify >Halag? I kind of like the Gothic feel of Ravenloft too, but after seeing some of those Outer Beings / Carnifex ideas I don't think we need Ravenloft for this. It could still be done, and still be interesting I think. >I have a problem, however, because I don't know whether the Immortals know >about the existence of demi-plans, Of course they do! Little is unknown to Immortals (except for Old Ones... And Outer Beings... Hmmm) :) Still, if demiplanes exist in your campaign, then the Immortals would certainly know of them - they are not that secret, after all. The problem with demiplanes is that some people on this list don't like them because they are an AD&D thing while they prefer to stick with the old D&D multiverse described in the Immortals set or WOTI. Some, like me, prefer the AD&D version of the multiverse with demiplanes and the whole PlaneScape view of the planes, but I get the feeling that we're a distinct minority... > and if they do whether they will powerful >enough to stop beings from these plane entering the Mystara plane, and if >not do you think they will united in order to try to stop this (this will >cause problems because the Immortals will have a hard time uniting because >of the WotI). If you want it in your campaign, then it's entirely possible. If you want to develop it with people on this list, then I'll help you if I can, but I imagine most people won't like the idea so much... So do I. I could use something like this myself because by the PCs IMC are all around level 9 and will need to go even higher by the end of WOTI if they are to survive the final encounter... Having read way too many White Wolf products, I just took the Gaz's view of things to be inherently biased. How COULD the hin version of the Pirates of Penzance really stand up to a credible naval threat? Obviously, they can't. They have the advantage amidst the rocks and reefs close to the Shirecoast, but in the open sea, they'd get slaughtered by anyone seriously looking for a fight. And since I'm probably never going to be running any wars or large scale combats, I sort of glossed over all that anyway, frankly. A simpler option might be those Eusdrian half-elves, who were altered by the Immortals to breed true. If we extend the genetics described earlier, we can consider these half-elves as having XM YM or XM XM genes -- and those of their offspring who carry at least one XM gene would have the appearances and abilities of half-elves, while those with the YM gene would not be stillborn as XM YE elves are. If a male half-elf mates with a female elf, we get XE XM (apparently a female half-elf) and XE YM (apparently a male elf). If a female half-elf mates with a male elf, we get XM XE (apparently a female half-elf) and XM YE (apparently a male half-elf). If a male half-elf mates with a female human, we get XH XM (apparently a female half-elf) and XH YM (apparently a male human). Working out the matings of future generations is left as an exercise for the student. However, in regard to the Belcadiz elves, it seems likely that they left the Savage Coast before the creation of true-breeding half-elves, so they should not have that gene among them and thus should breed with humans in the same manner as normal elves. To summarize all of the possible genetic combinations: XH XH is a normal female human. XH YH is a normal male human. XH XM is a female half-elf the size of of a human. XH YM is a male human the size of a half-elf. XH XE is a female half-elf who will not breed true. XH YE is a stillborn male human (size of an elf if he somehow survives) XM XH is a female half-elf the size of a human. XM YH is a male half-elf the size of a human. XM XM is a normal female half-elf. XM YM is a normal male half-elf. XM XE is a female half-elf the size of an elf. XM YE is a male half-elf the size of an elf. XE XH is a female half-elf who will not breed true. XE YH is a male elf the size of a human. XE XM is a female half-elf the size of an elf. XE YM is a male elf the size of a half-elf. XE XE is a normal female elf. XE YE is a normal male elf. The combinations containing XM or YM are found only on the Savage Coast, but the other combinations may be found anywhere that humans and elves coexist. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 11:57:21 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Caroletti Subject: Re: Update on Nightmare Site MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit thibault sarlat ha scritto: > what about giving the precious URL of your updated site. > thanks Ok.... www.geocities.com/iuliusscaevola/ What else? 8-) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 17:33:26 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Phillip Jones Subject: Re: Campaign ideas!! In other words I would like to start a > gothic horror setting in Mystara with (some of)the Ravenloft rules. I haven't got the Ravenloft boxed set myself, but I do like the Ravenloft scenarios, as they're so atmospheric. What I have done in my campaign is only allowed the Dark Powers that created the demi-plane of Ravenloft, to open a portal to Ravenloft when a great evil has been commited, enough to warrent the area to be drawn into Ravenloft. (which, I may add, my PCs then rectify during the course of the subsequent adventure, thus countering the "great evil" and closing the portal returning the area to Mystara once more). In addition, I only allow these gates to open in Karamiekos and Boldavia in Glantri, as the mood of these places (full of dark superstitions and the like) seem to suit Ravenloft more than the other places in the Known World (that I have information on anyway). However, I don't think that the Domain Lords would be able to open a rift between Mystara and Ravenloft, and if what I'm led to believe in what I've read about the place is correct, each of Ravenlofts lands is their rulers own personal hell, and that ruler is virtually trapped there. If they could establish a portal to Mystara, then they could escape their "prisons" and return through Mystara to their original worlds (or just run around Mystara causing havoc), something the Dark Powers would certainly not allow easily. > I have a problem, however, because I don't know whether the Immortals know > about the existence of demi-plans, and if they do whether they will powerful > enough to stop beings from these plane entering the Mystara plane, and if > not do you think they will united in order to try to stop this (this will > cause problems because the Immortals will have a hard time uniting because > of the WotI). In my opinion, Immortals of the many different worlds (Mystara, Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, etc.) came together as a council and formed Ravenloft in the first place (each member of this council would monitor its respective world for likely candidates to be sent to Ravenloft, and known collectively as "the Dark Powers"). So they would be aware of the existance of Ravenloft. Of course, it is enirely possible for the Immortals who represent Mystara on this council to be side tracked a bit by the events taking place during WotI but, as they are not actually warring directly with each other, but rather using their mortal followers to do it, this distraction should not keep them from performing their responsibilities. If it did, they could always ask some other Immortals to keep an eye on it for them (I'm sure an Immortal wouldn't mind having another Immortal owing him/her a favour). > Also, if they are powerful enough, maybe the Immortals of > Death will activily seek to open a porch between these two realms. Personally, I don't think so. If my above suggestion is correct, then who would even contemplate bringing the wrath of an entire Council down on him/her? > Do you think this is a possible scenario or is it just completly impossible? > I think it would be quite fun to try to achieve this and slowly have the PCs > find out that something is completly wrong (this would be more fun, because > most of the PCs have an evil allignment, so they will be in lots of trouble > before they realise that something is wrong). Nothing is impossible in your campaign ;) but personally, I'd think that it would be far easier to drag them into a warped Mystara that actually exists within Ravenloft. It would take them a time to realize that they have actually been dragged into Ravenloft, and of course, then they've got to try and escape (if they can!!). Muhahaha!!! No, what I did was have the mists surround the part of Karameikos or Boldavia that the said "evil deed" (and subsequent adventure) occurred. If the "evil deed" was "righted" (for the lack of a better word), then the mist would recede, and no-one would be none the wiser. However, if the PCs fail in their attempt to "right the wrong", then the mist would slowly envelop the said area, copying it and placing it in Ravenloft (along with the thing responsible for said "evil deed"). Of course, things are different in the copied land. Things are darker, more terrifying; the Traladarans are more superstitious, the Thyatians are more corrupt and self serving. Subtle differences that you wouldn't pick up on at first, and by the time you'd find out it would be too late and you would be stuck there. If I remember correctly, Strahd Von Zarovich didn't even realise that he'd been transported to Ravenloft until he tried to leave. > Did you alter the rules of Ravenloft? However, Lord Soth managed to escape Ravenloft, and returned to Krynn, so there must be ways to do it. As for the mirror image of Mystara, maybe not the entire planet but certainly the country that the party are adventuring in. If your PCs are truely evil, there is only a matter of time before they do something to attract the attention of the "Dark Powers". If your party is, say, adventuring in Karameikos, the "Dark Powers" would copy Karameikos, and lead the PCs into believing that they could sieze control of Karameikos (you could even twist things to turn Duke Stefan into an undead, with illusionary magicaal items to make him appear human). Of course, when they do "Karameikos" is then theirs - their new domain (and guess who's the newest Domain Lords in Ravenloft!!). > (Nice laugh!!!) Thus the hin are essentially everywhere around the world because they are bored!! If there was a lot of internal conflict, many would find too much adventuring locally. Also, the Five Shires is a very rich nation (for being at peace for so long). Any massive nation invading the Known World would surely target Five Shires. I'm sure that the Master of Hule has targeted the Shires for the possible financial gain. If a horde of Ethengar invades Darokin, Five Shires would be a likely target. Any humanoid army that invaded Darokin like in the past would definitely invade Five Shires. They are too juicy of a nation to resist. Perhaps even Barons of Karameikos or Karameikos as a nation itself might invade or at the very least annex eastern border terroritories. Perhaps the Hin do indeed have a mean streak. Maybe some Hin slaves were turned to evil due to the harsh punishment they received at their captivity. The Eastern border of Five Shires should be heavily defended because of Black Eagle Barony. Maybe some not so kind hearted Hin would decide to take Black Eagle Barony for themselves. They would surely do this, until they receive some compensation for the territory. After all, Duke Stephen lost control of the rogue barony. Maybe the Hin fear that another evil Baron could control the territory (or terror-tory), and thus they feel they must control the area until all evil is ousted, or until they are assured there will be no repeat episode. Maybe they even get greedy and decide to keep the lands. Surely there will be some complications as nations just to don't conquer territory and surrender it in medieval times. In the canon timeline, some diplomacy has to be assumed as there is no friction, but no GM has to play this out verbatim and could manipulate it a bit to make things interesting. There could be a lot of little buggers that are mean spirited and maybe even psychotic. What happens when a Hin goes bad? Watch out because they can be cunning and lethal. Maybe a group of ex-slaves decide to start a slave ring of themselves, but they only enslave humans, the race of their hated captures. Maybe they do horrific crimes against Karameikan people as some sort of psychotic revenge for they captivity. Some Hin might become power hungry and decide to grab land and create dominions in Karameikos, Five Shires, and Darokin. Other Hin might be just wandering bandits that use magic and other unique ways to pilfer things around the world. Look at Time Bandits for a humorous example. Maybe some Hin join the same religion as the Master of Hule, and form a secret society where they still from the people and give to this organization. Perhaps some Hin form a Assassin's Guild based in Five Shires that secretly assassinates prominent people around the world for a price; who would suspect such peace loving people... There are plenty of room for adventure, but most likely it will be more secretive. Xanthus was personally responsible for brutal repression of the Jennites = of Esterhold- exactly how brutal isn't specified, but it could certainly hav= e been bad enough for the Mists to drag him in. Other possibilities- I'm working on an idea that DM inadvertently prompte= d a long time ago (dealing with a town on Ochalea that disappeared from a cou= ple of maps and the reasons for it). On that summers night in 773 AC, when Ithel familys evil plans went awry, the mists of Ravenloft snatched them and transported them to the demi-plane of Dread. The multi-coloured glow seen around Itheldown Island was the Ithel familys vain attempts to avoid their fates. So great was the magic they cast that night, that it actually warped the structure of Ithel Castle itself, leaving it twisted and bent. Now, the Ithels reside in their twisted castle on Itheldown Island in Ravenloft, using their magical prowess to try (in vain) to escape and return to their home world of Mystara. Ok, I know it sort of upsets the adventure idea in the back of the Darokin Gaz, but it could be an interesting setting. :) BTW Sorry about the last post. Hmm, there are a few more that come to my mind (I am doing it from memory, so forgive me any mistakes and lack of many names): Branart McGregor, but I don't think I'd want him to leave Mystara for now. Many other princes (and their relatives) in Glantri might just be fit for it as well. Count Osterhaus - this could be just too fun to watch! Picture yourself, as a DM, granting your PCs the right to be the Dark Powers of Ravenloft themselves in a mission to bring that damned count to Ravenloft. The others powers would tell the PCs: yes, he is a priest, but he has been going against some of the teaching of his goddess as limiting what women can do; and Vanya is too busy in too many areas of the world to really worry about one of her servitors, so you should have no trouble. And then, they manage to bring the count to Ravenloft and ... Hosadus, of course (maybe after Hule is somehow defeated) Zandor (he is capable of anything to hold on the throne of what is left of Alphatia), altough he is more mad than a great evil, he doesn't look that competent to me. I am sure many others in Alphatia could be included as well. Does PC3 mention who is the leader of the evil sea dwellers? Thar; Ravenloft could certainly use an undead brilliant orc. That " golem dwarf" from the PWAs(?), father of their race?, who comes back to cause a lot of myahem in Rockhome. Wasn't there a traitor to Alfheim among its clan leaders? And a traitor in the khanates, one who was about to sell his brother to the glantrians? The manscorpions had a great story of treachery and how they were cursed by Ixion. That could be used as well. I am sure it wouldn't be hard to tell the story of a herathian aranea deserving to go there. A nagpa from Serraine? Maybe Geoff, who is still working in his Manifestation Form, should include one of his dark hins in Ravenloft? A carnifex? And, as we are at it, we might include the List Ogre there! That'd explain why Leroy had to leave his functions as administrator! Persoanlly, I feel not only GREAT evils fit in Ravenloft, from what I have heard and read, anyway, but I might be wrong. If that is true, the modules and adventure ideas can certainly provide several other examples as that darokinian sculptress (Melissa?) who used living people as material to her works. I mean did they commit atrocities when they took over Alfheim? If they did then this maybe explain why their land is looking so dark. Maybe the Mysts are trying to get hold of them already? Apart from that does anyone know where I can find more info on the Shadow Elves (prefably on the Internet, because I spend so much money already on buying the things I though would be interesting). Also what about the Heldannic Knights? If I am not mistaken they commited all sorts of evil deeds in the name of Vanya, or am I wrong here? They might be invited to have a look in a new Heldannic realm in Ravenloft. Also Alphatia might be a good idea, I think. Sure it is supposed to have disappeared into the Hollow World, but with a little bit of work it could have been dragged into Ravenloft (no mirror image made, just the whole continent taken away from Mystara). Besides I feel about her like I do about Ludwig and Bargle - we need her here as a campaign villain. Landryn Teriak is the name of the Shadowlord of Denagoth/Essuria, right? I suppose we could send him to Ravenloft, but IIRC he is still active in the MA. Since I'm a writer (among many) on the MA, I don't think I'd like that - there are still interesting things going on with him in the MA. Pyre? I'm sure I'm an infidel for saying this, but who is that? I can't remember seeing that name anywhere. On the other hand, we could create villains of Mystara's history who are relatively unknown on Mystara, yet did things that were so bad that they were pulled to Ravenloft. A nasty Alphatian from Blackheart sounds like an absolute must. I suppose we could also add Zendrolion, the first Emperor of Thyatis, since he did murder his friend, the wizard Lucinius, and the kings of Ochalea and the Pearl Islands to gain power. Perhaps we could also add an Alphatian emperor - most of them certainly weren't very nice people... Kerothar IV comes to mind as a both bad and vengeful emperor. Okay, so I know that Mystara's history does not support making these villains who disappeared into the mists of Ravenloft, but maybe history remembers these things wrongly because the empires cannot reveal that they simply disappeared inexplicably one day... And it has the added benefit of the otherwise not-terribly dangerous halfling vampire (well, not terrible dangerous as compared to a human one) can't be permanently put to rest the same way a human one can, or kept at bay the same way. I would like this idea if it wasn't for one thing IMC. The thing is that in a campaign I played a while back my wizard PC (yes, yet another mage I played...) was actually the successor of Henry Ithel! My plot was that on that fateful night, Henry's grandson, Franklin Ithel, was thrown into the waters and then picked up among those rescued days later. He later started a family but changed the family name (of course!) to Henry, to remind himself of what his grandfather had done, and he vowed that their family would never again deal with the dark powers of magic. This secret would go in succession to the firstborn son of the family, whose job it would be to prevent any family members from dealing with magic. From that point on the Ithels, now the Henrys, would work as merchants for the Toney house in Akorros. Eventually, this firstborn son was my PC, but he was so interested in magic that he couldn't really follow that code. Besides, his sister was heavily in the local thieves' guild (remember that description of how bad things are for the Toney house in Akorros because of that Thieves Guild?) and he feared that if she was exposed, it could also reveal what he knew of their heritage that he had recently learned when his father died. So he decided to end the Ithel curse himself by becoming a powerful enough wizard himself. That was the idea anyway, but we ran into a problem when our DM realized that some of us knew more about Mystara than he did, and so he used a planar adventure to strand us all in Greyhawk and told us that we could never return. :( The Greyhawk campaign was still interesting, though, but it died a few years ago, and I don't think we'll ever bring it back to life again now :( So for that reason, I might bring my old PC wizard back to Mystara to deal with Razrog, perhaps needing the aid of a few current PCs ;) So while I like this idea, I don't think I'll use it IMC. Unless, that is, it merely deals with the original Ithels living in a copied realm in Ravenloft. Then I might have a *second* reason to bring back my old 'Dusk' character :) >BTW Sorry about the last post. I was replying to the Stalker's mail when it >escaped me. That'd make them nearly unkillable, though, as it'd mean a frantic scramble to the nearest clan headquarters. It'd also make the secret of Blackflame not-so-secret almost instantly. I also think it's kind of overkill: Human vampires don't have to be killed with a rare and special relic. Why would halfling vampires require something comparable? Actually, they managed to take Alfheim away from the elves by causing the corruption to the trees themselves so that no surface elves wanted to live there anymore (besides not wanting to live together with shadow elves, of course), so that's not really so likely. The irony is that now they cannot stop the corrupt they caused themselves, and so they are stuck with an ugly forest they don't really like so much, but cling to because they conquered it. >Apart from that does anyone know where I can >find more info on the Shadow Elves (prefably on the Internet, because I >spend so much money already on buying the things I though would be >interesting). You don't know? You can actually download the entire gazetteer and AD&D conversion stuff from WOTC's homepage. The link is Just go down the list and pick anything you like. Sure the nice pictures and maps are missing, but you can live without the pictures, and you can just get the maps from either Shawn's site or from Thib's >Also what about the Heldannic Knights? With the inquisition stuff going on there after WOTI, this could work just fine. Hmm, maybe we should run this by Geoff Gander - he's the expert on the Heldannic Knights IIRC... Please tell me whether these ideas are >far fetched. Thanks. Well, like somebody already said, a few Blackheart Alpahtian wizards should definitely be included because the wizards who live there are often so incredibly evil. Actually, I have a weird suggestion for that: Skarda. Yes, I know that he was the villain in the Skarda's Mirror adventure, but in truth he wasn't. The adventure actually says that that's not his real name, just one he took after a while. But why? IMC I reasoned that it was because he had studied under the 'real' Skarda, a Blackheart Alphatian, and then assumed his name once he had killed/betrayed his old master. In the 'Shraek in the Night' adventure (from p. 103-105 in DOTE's DM book) I actually had the PCs come across a huge, devastated area in the forest of Blackheart where magic didn't work, and where they found an old sign saying "Estate of Skarda". Sure raised a few eyebrows. I assumed that the Skarda from the adventure had betrayed him, killed him, and then taken his name, but he might just as well have been taken to Ravenloft, I suppose. Still, that was just IMC, of course. Still, does it make sense? - The Stalker of Alphatia PS: Wow. 224 members on the MML. When I started in November we were "only" 166. The List Ogre must be so proud! Well, he should be, IMHO. ;) Congratulations Leroy! While there were some problems for me in the end, the bulk of the time was great. We had our ups and downs (anyone want to discuss canon?), but I'd like to think that this list always did what it set out to do: support a great setting, giving people a place to come together to discuss Mystara, and thus support each other. These days, with other sources such as the boards on Wizard's site, that doesn't seem like much, but for those of use here at the beginning, we know how much it meant. Thanks for all the praise and support I have recieved over the last few months, since I decided to step down. I wasn't perfect, and slipped up on occasion, but it is nice to see that the majority liked what I did, and appreciated the amount of work and time that went into it all. As most know, the MML was my creation, my "baby", and I am glad I am passing it on to other capable hands while things are still good. Good luck to Geoff, and good luck to the list. Thank you. P.S. I am not running off. I will be around, though likely lurking in the shadows... So long, and thanks for all the fish, Leroy- This list has been the single longest running "contribution" of mine to the 'net, and the source of my largest amount of interaction thus far. My thanks to you for providing us this forum, and keeping it running for as long as you were able to do so. I'm glad you'll be sticking around in some capacity, because it wouldn't be quite the same otherwise. I don't know quite how any of the other lists run (I was on the Planescape list for a brief time, but that's it), but I think we've got the best one here with the MML, and have done more to promote and continue our favorite world for years than many of the other worlds (including some of the continuing "official" ones, I think). So give yourself a pat on the back for me, ya done good. :) >Good luck to Geoff, and good luck to the list. All hail He Who Must Be Obeyed! ;) Welcome aboard Geoff! >Thank you.
