It says he was killed while adventuring, but maybe like the example above he disappeared to Ravenloft, Thanatos found out about this and took on his identity. This would fit in with the things you wrote above. I do have a question though. If the land is copied when an evil act is comitted and not righted, what about the people in that land? Are they copied as well or are they complete pulled into Ravenloft? That way whole pieces of land would be without inhabitants. If this isn't the case and "copies" are made of the people, what happens if they are killed in Ravenloft? Lets say, that Stefan Karameikos is a "the Drak Ruler" as portrayed in "Karameikos: The Dark Ruler of Karameikos", what happens if this copied evil King is killed in Karameikos? Does his original image get killed as well? Or is just the evil side of a person copied to Ravenloft? This way a when this evil side gets killed in Ravenloft I think there will be two options. Either the person in the "real" world looses his evil side (which would mean that if this happens an allignment shift will take place to good, if the person doesn't have that allignment already) or the person is killed him/herself just like his "evil copy" in Ravenloft, or the "evil side" of this person is send back to the person. In this case it would be possible to have this person go the Ravenloft again should other evil acts be committed. Would do you think is the most likely? Or can this not happen at all? Could some one please, provide me with a couple of names of people who committed evil deeds and disapearred some time after this? I know we already discussed a few, but I would like to have a list of evil persons who disappearred. Maybe I can find this some where on the Internet? Thanks. But he did surpress lots of people, he killed them, he sold them into slavery etc. I think this would be enough to, at least, draw the attention of the powers (that is, the way we have been trying to use them in Mystara), right? I think he would be an exellent candidate to obtain his own little domain and do it all again. Maybe when he does some more evil things the will take him. The things is, I have got lots of evil things lined up for him to do, so I think he will have to disappear in my campaign, sooner or later. Probably the PC will disappear with him. Yes, he is Thanatos and that is the fun of it. Imagine the dark Powers trying to take the count, completely unaware of the fact they are gettig a Hierarch. The Immortals can't detect other immortals in their Mortal Manifestations, I figured the Dark Powers would't be able to as well. Many of them would likely fit the bill as someone worthy of being deported there, and there might even be a whole dominion there devoted to their foul worship. One or more Carnifex wizards, aeons ago, might have tried to escape from the Pits of Banishment, only to end up in Ravenloft through temporal distortion (IIRC, Ravenloft isn't that old as a dimension, is it? Certainly not thousands of years old?). From what I have read of Domain creation in the original Ravenloft book, Domains of Dread and the novels. Sometimes the entier location is taken away and sometimes the Dark Powers create the "population". I need to reread the entries for the Dark Sun domain there to see how the city-state was created. I just read an article about The Darine (since one of my players decided to play a gypsy I though I'd better take a look at this) and much too my surprise I saw that in this article (Jennifer Favia, at: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Realm/2091/darine.html) the Vistani were mentioned. It said that they could serve as guides, but also that they have a darker side: kidnapping and even sometimes assassinations etc. Could anyone please help how these two are linked? Are there Vistani on Mystara (to be more specific in Karameikos) and if there are, are they linked to the Vistani in Ravenloft (I know this looks like a stupid question (they are called Vistani in Mystara and Ravenloft, but I just wanted to hear it from some on else). Also, as far as I got it they are descendants from the Traldar, but can they only be found in Traladara (excuses: Karameikos)? Hope to read from you soon. Yes we get into fights now and then - I've been in some, BUT - we still manage to overcome our difference and use it for something creative that enriches Mystara in some way (that's how I see it anyway!). You suggested to put the adventure around 300 AC because that would put it in the time period when Queen Amanda, "the Black Widow", poisoned her husband King Mithras II and claimed the throne of Darokin, and you suggested that she could do this and then prepare to marry the anti-paladin. I admit that I didn't like the idea so much at first, because I thought that the anti-paladin wouldn't be interested in an alliance on equal terms with her, and certainly not enter into marriage. I've changed my mind a little, though only for an even nastier plot, but I need to know how bad a woman Amanda really was... Naturally I can do what I want IMC, but if canon says otherwise, I'd rather know now... My idea is that Amanda wasn't really so bad. She was ambitious and thus she married King Mithras II for power. Only she discovered that as queen she had very little. Perhaps she did love her husband at one point, but over the years in court it slowly died. Now, when the anti-paladin appeared on the scene and started gathering a lot of followers in Darokin masquerading as a paladin of Maat, King Mithras II eventually called him to his royal court to have him swear an oath of loyalty to his throne, since he couldn't have such a powerful night in his country if he was not loyal to him. At court the anti-paladin promised loyalty, yet fully intended to break his word whenever convenient. But Amanda was quite taken with the handsome warrior (he did have Charisma 18 after all!), and the anti-paladin noticed this and decided to exploit it. So he seduced the queen (evil Lancelot plots here!), and made her fall completely in love with him. The a nasty plague hit Darokin. This was actually created by an ally archmage of the anti-paladin who was also a follower of Thanatos, but the anti-paladin used it to convince people that evil followers of Thanatos had brought this upon them and that they would have to find them and "cleanse" Darokin of their evil. This he did by becoming a witch hunter and starting an inquisition which always targeted his own enemies. As the plague was spread by the anti-paladin's fellow followers of Thanatos, he convinced Amanda that the king had also been infected with with the evil plague of Thanatos, and that it would eventually make the king betray his own country. He also told her that the plague was turning the king's soul to evil, but that she could save him if she freed his soul and sent it to the next world before he completely succumbed to the plague's curse of evil. Then he gave her a potion (poison) that would accomplish this. Amanda didn't want to, but he eventually convinced her that if she did it and then took the throne claiming that the plague had killed Mithras, then they could finally be married. So she took the poison to Mithras and used it. Then she claimed the throne as they had planned. Yet when the anti-paladin's unholy crusade continued and more and more people were burned, and he suddenly broke all contact with her, Amanda eventually had to speak out against him. Yet he had prepared for this by having his archmage friend collect evidence of what she had done to Mithras, which he then used to expose her once she spoke out against her. Amanda was thrown from the throne and tried to flee, but the anti-paladin captured her, put her before an inquistion, and then had her burned! (Just inspired by all this talk of 'great evils', I guess...) Now, what I need to know is whether this is inconsistent with what we know of Amanda? Unfortunately, I don't have the Darokin Gaz myself, so I like to hear both whether this is consistent with canon or not, and, of course, just what people think of it in general ;) - The Stalker Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 01:23:53 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: The Stalker Organization: Angelfire (http://email.angelfire.mailcity.lycos.com:80) Subject: Re: Campaign ideas!! Well, some of the HKs no doubt are evil enough to have done many terrible acts; if we use Bruce's timeline for his proto-Heldannic Gaz, then the mass burnings and slaughter of indigenous Heldanners is ghastly enough an act to send some HKs to Ravenloft. Personally, I think some HKs would have been sent around that time (c. AC 950-953), when they were using any means possible to secure their territories. Perhaps to give the whole thing an ironic twist, one the the HKs (perhaps the grand leader of the branch church set up in Ravenloft) has his own family put to the inquisition over suspicions of disloyalty... So, we're getting a head start on drumming up submissions. If you would like to submit an article, adventure, artwork, maps, etc. for #5, please *query* us now, or at least asap. You do _not_ have to have a written article, just an idea at this point. But I'd like to know how much space to reserve for this issue. Deadline for completed submissions will be 1 September. Just drop me a line at my main address, valerya@webtv.net, with your idea. (You'll get a faster reply this way, rather than writing the mystaratome... address.) I didn't know that, so that's for clearing it up. Xanthus can certainly be used in that case. In fact, I got so much into this discussion that I went out and bought the Ravenloft - Domains of Dread book (been meaning to buy some of that stuff for some time now, anyway!) So, I flip throught the pages, and lo and behold! We forgot Meredoth! We actually don't have to create an evil Darklord from Mystara for Ravenloft, because they already have one! Just look on p. 79 of the Domains of Dread book. There is Meredoth the Necromancer, an Alphatian necromancer who moved to an island off the coast of Norwold and did some rather nasty things to his followers because he could be bothered by their problems when he was doing his research (I guess Blackheart was overbooked that day!) The description even states outright that he's from the Mystara campaign! Still, that shouldn't stop us from adding others if we want to... Hmmm. First Meredoth and now Xanthus... both Alphatians... I've known about the setting for quite sometime, yet only two daysa ago was I compelled to buy my first Mystara products. Call it ignorance if you will, but I just never had the desire to check out Mystara until now. I picked up the Karameikos and Glantri boxed sets, read through them, and fell in love with the setting instantly. Driven to find out more about Mystara, I went online looking for additional products. I was aware Mystara was canceled a while back, but that was no bother thanks to the wonders of the net. However, looking through the list of products, I found I had no idea what to get. So, I figured what better way than to ask some more knowledgeable fans. Thus, here are a few questions I'd be grateful if someone (or several of you) could help answer... What Mystara products are worth picking up? I'm only interested in material that would be considered 'canon' with the previously mentioned boxed sets I've already purchased. I know Red Steel is linked to Mystara, but what does it describe? A continent, a region outside the Known World, or something entirely different? What about the DM and Players Survival kits? Also, what books/sets contain information on the Hollow World, The Immortals, and the other continents of Mystara? Well I believe that is all for now. I'm off to start preparing an adventure to introduce my players to Mystara. Thanks in advance to all who are able to help satisfy my curiousity and answer my inquiries. I'm just glad to have found such a great setting, and am sorry I didn't give it a chance earlier. ~ Deldain ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 21:06:15 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Beau Yarbrough Subject: Re: New to Mystara In-Reply-To: MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 23:15 6/30/00 EDT, Lord Deldain wrote: >Greetings all, Hiya. >Though I've been into AD&D for years, I've only recently gotten interested in >Mystara. I bought the GKoM boxed set years ago, when I wasn't playing actively, and instantly sold off my Greyhawk stuff -- which was considerable. (Picked up the Monstrous Compendium and Joshuan's Almanac at that point, too.) Now, years after the last time I played -- although I first played in 1979, for what that's worth -- I'm running a campaign (in Karameikos with the KKoM box) and picking up supplementary material. >Thus, here are a few questions I'd be grateful if someone (or several of you) >could help answer... Also, what books/sets contain information on the Hollow World, >The Immortals, and the other continents of Mystara? I'd pick up an almanac, since IIRC, there's no single source otherwise that describes all of the Known World. In my experience, there's no need to know a lot about ALL the world for most campaigns, which is another reason I love the boxed sets and Gazetteers: DETAIL! Joshuan's Almanac is mostly in-character information, and a lot of it is a pain in the ass, honestly; it'd be tough to send your campaign to Ierendi with what it gives in the JA. The PWAs, though, seem to assume you've got a great map available, and that's kept me from picking them up on eBay. The two Red Steel boxed sets describe the Savage Coast region west of Hule. It's pretty independent of the Known World region, but it does a good job of setting out what a Mystaran campaign would be like. It's also got lots of neat extras, like the secret of the aranea, more player character races and, of course, swashbuckling fun. (I'm not a fan of the Red Curse, though.) The Hollow World is described in its own boxed set and several modules and supplements starting with "HW." I don't have those. The Wrath of the Immortals is ... um ... uh ... Someone else should also jump in and describe Champions of Mystara here ... I picked up both the DM and Player's Survival Kits for a song on eBay. They're mostly worthless, but I'm providing the Player's kit list of character names for each nation to my players as well as the maps of Darokin and Glantri. (The Karameikos one makes some choices about the size of the nation's forests that don't agree with my campaign which, as everyone on this list is tired of hearing about, involves a tiny hamlet in the middle of the Radlebb Woods along the Westron Road.) The one supplement I would DEFINITELY get is the Monstrous Compendium. The monsters are great (well, except for a few goofy ones that remind me what I thought of D&D back when I was a committed Greyhawker) and the information about how the default monster list for AD&D is tweaked for Mystara is a must. >Well I believe that is all for now. I'm off to start preparing an adventure >to introduce my players to Mystara. Thanks in advance to all who are able to >help satisfy my curiousity and answer my inquiries. I'm just glad to have >found such a great setting, and am sorry I didn't give it a chance earlier. Share, share, share as you work on all of it! The best thing about this list is people tossing out ideas and bits from their own games and campaigns. I'll be making my Midwood setting available once this campaign ends this fall. (The same characters may be used again, but their status quo will be very different by then.)
