Something else that's happening IMC (since we're talking about coffee, and I'm waiting for mine to finish brewing), is that I have (in the more Renaissance-style nations) coffee houses. I got the idea from reading Rutherford's "London" novel, in which he mentions that coffee houses grew in popularity around the 1600s. Anyhow, Darokin City boasts a number of such places, none of which are large scale yet, since the first beans only arrived from Yavdlom and Thanegioth a few years ago, but the up-and-comers among the merchant classes hang out there, as opposed to going to taverns or high-class restaurants. I even have a subculture among some of the younger merchants, who are so enthralled with cutting deals and making the big score, that consuming copious amounts of coffee "obviously means they are so busy making money they have no time to sleep". I would imagine other larger nations, such as Thyatis, Glantri, and probably Minrothad also have coffee houses, too. I would also imagine that specialty coffees will come along as well: Caurenzian Espresso adding local liquors into coffee Minrothaddan iced lattes and worse... They first appeared in Voyage of the Princess Ark #5 or 6, IIRC (don't recall the exact issue offhand, but it was circa Dragon magazine #160 or so) and then kept popping up sporadically over time during that series. The most work that has been done on them is by Bruce Heard (their originator), and can be found on Shawn's site under the Heldann geographic entry. Geoff's done a great map of the region, and has also (along with various others) done a lot of work on the HKs. Fortunately, the HKs (as opposed to other nations and things) were pretty much entirely worked up within the online community, so information on them is easy to come by (as opposed to otu of print). ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 08:13:50 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Rob Subject: Re: Heldannic Knights MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > Over on Usenet, there's a guy explaining how his players have founded > their own town. AFAIK, the only "canon" polities on Skothar are Minaea, the Jennite tribes (the free ones), Esterhold, and assorted Tanagoro tribes mentioned as being east of Minaea in the PWAs. There is also a reference to Thonian mercenaries in CM1 (IIRC) for the war machine portion of that adventure, but nothing is mentioned about them, or what their homeland is like now. In addition, the information that they are just another Neathar tribe contradicts other information that makes them great seafarers (thereby linking them with the Tanagoro, who in prehistory undertook voyages equivalent to those of the RW Polynesians) and which states that they have dark or "dusky" skin, a characteristic that is certainly not true of the Neathar. I have therefore taken the liberty of combining the available information about the HW Tanagoro and the Neathar/Makai to form the following composite history: The Makai are descendants of Tanagoro seafarers who combined with Maukai (Neathar) natives on an island that they reached during their extensive sea voyages. After being driven out by the Maukai, they sailed west to the Thanegiouth Archipelago and later to the Ierendi isles. At some point a threatened Makai community was relocated to the Hollow World. *********************** Character Races/Classes *********************** New character races: None. Modified character races: Humans are the only race in this culture. They are restricted by their cultural bias but receive the following special compensations: 1) They have a bonus of +1 to AC. 2) They receive a bonus of +1 to hit and damage with preferred weapon as determined by class. 3) They have a movement rate of 150' (50') as opposed to the standard rate of 120' (40'). 4) They receive +1 hp per level to level 10. This bonus is not received for any levels earned while defying their cultural bias; all other compensations are immediately and totally lost while they defy their cultural bias. Female warriors must run away from their villages and survive on their own in the wilderness until they reach 3d level, at which point they may return home and be accepted as warriors. Makai humans have medium brown skin, which makes them dark compared to any humans other than the Tanagoro. They have dark brown to black hair and dark brown eyes. Because of their Tanagoro ancestry they tend to be tall and lean of build. As described in the Hollow World boxed set, Makai are very peaceful, merry, and amorous, with no conception of private property. Half of them are thieves. They wear only breechclouts and flower necklaces and live on a chain of islands south of the Merry Pirates in the Atlass Ocean. Restricted character races: Dwarves, elves, and halflings are not found among the Makai. New primary character classes: Forester and Rake. Modified primary character classes: Fighter: Cultural melee weapons are dagger, mace, club, staff, spear, javelin, trident, and net. Cultural missile weapons are bow/long, bow/short, and sling. Cultural armor is normal shield only. Barding is not mentioned. Preferred weapon for fighters is trident. Mage: Mages may wield daggers, staffs, and nets but may not wear any armor or carry shields. Preferred weapon is staff. Makai may be Foresters (fighter/mages). Cleric/Druid: Clerics may wield clubs, staffs, spears, and nets and may use normal shields. Preferred weapon is spear. Favored Immortals are Korotiku and Diulanna. Thief: Both Thieves and Rakes are found among the Makai. They may wield daggers, staffs, spears, javelins, and nets but may not wear any armor or carry shields. Preferred weapon is spear. Restricted primary character classes: None. Secondary character classes: None. ****** Skills ****** Languages: Makai speak Makai and Neathar. The Makai language has no written form. Makai may learn to speak but not read and write other languages. General Skills: Required skills are any two of the following: Profession/Sailor/Canoeing, Profession/Pearl-Diver, and Profession/Fisherman ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 01:36:19 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: "David S. I also reduced the weapon lists to those that were available to both the Tanagoro and the Neathar/Makai cultures, with the exceptions of the net (which should be available to any seafaring culture) and the trident (the Makai "cultural weapon"). Thus, my Makai would wind up with a superior movement rate and a bonus with a single weapon in return for a very limited weapon selection. For proper balance, one of those two bonuses should probably be eliminated. Since as renowned seafarers the Makai would not be noted for their ability to run across the plains, I would be inclined to keep the weapon bonus and eliminate the movement rate bonus. A more limited weapon selection is one way to do it. I can't think of anything else just now. Regarding the movement bonus, though: since the Makai are seafarers, maybe they shouldn't have improved speed on land, but improved speed when swimming (if they take the skill, which you might decide is free for them), and/or when moving around on a ship? For those of you not familiar with it, the magic-users in Mage perform their magic through understanding of Spheres that encompass all aspects of creation. These spheres are Time, Entropy, Life, Matter, Spirit, Forces, Mind, Prime, and Correspondence. Has anyone tried using the Mage spheres in Mystara? I think that Life and Spirit might work for Immortals, but I don't know that Correspondence or Prime would fit in as well. Of course, I'm not all that familiar with the Mystaran Spheres, anyone care to explain them in better detail. I'm sure WOTI covers them, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy yet, unfortunately. I'm looking for weapon mastery tables for new and unusual weapons for OD&D, as my players are going into their "exotic" weapons phase. If anyone knows where I can find new weapons/weapon mastery tables I would be most appreciative. Thanks. :) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message.
