I can easily accept your Balance and Flavour reasons, although I'd probably let this "Regional Feat" also apply to other regions of Mystara where the "Swashbuckler type" are common. In "baseline" mystara, that would be Darokin and much of the Savage Coast. There are strong arguments for Minrothad as well, being a "sea faring" nation. Irendi, though also part of the same island chain, never struck me as a center for "Swashbuckling Types" though. I agree totally. I don't think the feat needs to be restricted to Darokin, but that if it's going to be regional to Darokin (among other places), it has to fit with Darokin, hence I'd like to see rapiers in it and not short swords. Minrothad is a good candidate in part because it is also a mercantile nation. Also, since the Minroth (Minrothaddan? Minrothaddian?) Merchant Prince class is so much like the Darokinian Merchant class, I think it could have this style of fighting incorporated in its prestige class in the same way I suggested for Darokin, i.e. automatic proficiency in main-gauche and dagger in the weapon list, and no free feat but accessible, affordable training leading to the feat. [sniparooni] > [R-M] Exotic Weapon Proficiency - Main-Gauche (use with rapier > only**). This is like my original proposal if you just say yes to > main-gauches. I think I'd set the Prerequisites only at the +1 base attack bonus and dagger proficiency. Trying to use this feat when one is not proficient with Rapier would have enough complicating penalties of its own that I don't think it's required. Besides, a Halfling wanting to use two Main Gauches would obviously not need a proficiency with Rapier to do so. You're right and it was an oversight on my part not to exclude the rapier proficiency as a requirement so that halflings and gnomes can use the feat. I would expect virtually all humans bothering to use the feat to have rapier proficiency (esp. since it comes for free for rogues and fighters) but then again, there is this interesting possibility of wizards wielding matched main-gauches (although as a wizard I would rather stick with one free hand for spells and a throwable dagger in the other, and stay out of melee altogether!). In addition, I think I'd also allow Dagger and Main Gauche as well as two Main Gauches. Dagger and Main Gauche is really the Halfling/Gnome version of Rapier and Main Gauche, with the same potential bonus to AC. Using Two Main Gauches could also allow the +2 AC bonus to be applied if neither is used to attack (i.e., if the character uses the Total Defense maneouvre). I'm not too keen on the on-hand dagger substitute (pun unintended), but because daggers and main-gauches are so similar, and you're talking about allowing a dagger for the on-hand (which can't be used for parrying), I don't think it affects game balance much. So you can throw it, it's a bit cheaper and lighter, no huge advantage. Since you're suggesting that at least one main-gauche is needed (for the off-hand) to use the feat, and since if you have access to one of these special weapons you probably have access to two, it's not like you're being too generous by allowing an on-hand dagger. On the other hand (again, no pun intended), if you CAN use a regular dagger in your on-hand, why would you ever wield two main-gauches instead of doing that, since the on-hand main-gauche gives no benefit over a dagger and can't be thrown? Just for the record, I envision main-gauches that look like short versions of rapiers, and that aren't any shorter than daggers. In this view (which I don't claim to be objectively "correct" by any means), I don't think a gnome/halfing with a dagger and main-gauche would look any more like a human with a rapier and main-gauche than a gnome/halfling with two main-gauches, and I do think the two main-gauches would look more stylish; at most the regular dagger would suffice in a pinch. ;) Just my opinion, mind you. Question, though: when you propose an extra +2 to AC when doing a total defense, are you suggesting a total of +6 AC to all attacks? Or the regular +4 versus all and a +6 versus melee attacks? Or a +6 against melee attacks and no bonus to other attacks? I think that any bonus you want to give to a total defense should be consistent with the parrying function, i.e. that extra +2 shouldn't apply to non-melee attacks. In fact, I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable giving the full regular +4 against non-melee attacks when the character is focusing on using her main-gauche for melee defense. Ack, I'd probably be ok with it actually, but can you discuss this idea in more detail? [snip] > [O-D] Dagger Parrying. As O-M above, that is you can use certain > other weapons in addition to the rapier in your on-hand, but in this > case you use a regular dagger for the parrying instead of a > main-gauche. On the > other hand, I wouldn't dare call this a Darokinian feat at all, nor > even a regional feat of any sort, since it seems like something many > cultures could have. Yes, this is more like a "standard Feat" that someone might choose to take. In fact, I'm working on converting Weapon Mastery over to 3E for that right now, and have also considered the Combat Options, and it's very similar to a "plain jane" Parrying Feat, which can be applied to virtually any melee weapon. With the right sorts of prerequisites, I think a general parrying feat that turns off-hand offense into defense at the expense of a small penalty to off-hand offense has serious potential. The key would be adjudicating which combinations of weapons "make sense" and which don't, since even with a general feat can't apply to ALL weapons. [snip snip] Not Bad. I like this. I had some other thoughts for implementing the Main Gauche and also for the Stiletto, based in part on the stats for those in 2E provided to me by a player who was thinking his character might like to have one or both ;-) I'll have to go over them again and compare to see which method I like better I think. I might even post those ideas here for public comparison. I'd really like to see your ideas, especially what you have in mind for stiletto. Part of the reason I didn't want to force the main-gauche (as opposed to plain dagger) issue is that one thing I want to keep from OD&D is a smaller selection of weapons (I'm happy with just one mace that does d6 damage, for instance). But if something isn't too complicated, is restricted to appropriate regions, and really adds flavor, then hey, I wanna see it! :) Magus Coeruleus dleland@cogsci.ucsd.edu cogsci.ucsd.edu/~dleland "The difference between George W. Yeah- there was the typical sage who has nothing better to do than stand by the side of the road and give out cryptic advice for free, burning down a druid's grove, and other assorted fun and games. It was pretty funny, but I don't recall which issue it was offhand (I know that it's somewhere in my stack of Dragons, though. Probably an April issue if I had to guess.) Well, aside from the air shafts and the like you've mentioned, I'd suggest the following: -Dry storage (for things like flour, wheat, etc.) -Kitchens (ovens, food preparation areas, fire pits) -General purpose storage rooms (containing wood, quarried stone, etc. - just in case the place is besieged, or the countryside becomes more unsafe than it usually is, and things still need to be built, repaired, etc.) -Indoor animal pens (just in case) -Garbage/sewage pits -Dormitories/living quarters -Infirmaries (with side rooms for medical supplies - herbs, etc.) -Forges -General purpose workrooms -Library (hey, you never know...) -Redundancies of the above (I see dwarves as being very resourceful people, and if part of their complex falls to invaders, they should be able to seal off that part, and use emergency supplies stocked up in other areas in order to fight on) Hope this helps, Geoff -- Geoff Gander, BA 97 Cartographer/Game Designer/Government Peon Carnifex Loremaster au998@freenet.carleton.ca : www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Realm/2091 ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 21:50:05 +0300 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Solmyr Subject: Enothril Birthright Comments: To: SCBR List MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Greetings, everyone. I can easily believe you, but there is a rather large portion of the MMLers who think that 3ed resembles or is inspired to OD&D. I suppose it's because of the possibility to add a new class later in the game, like the OD&D druid/paladin/avenger. A lot of people are peeved that they "dumbed" down AD&D - but of course, we, who have been playing the "dumbed" down version all along, are pretty jazzed. Well, thought I'd discuss for a topic, a new RPG computer game coming out. Obviously from the subject, called Neverwinter Nights. Well, I'll post the site in case it hasn't. http://www.neverwinternights.com/ I was just wondering who, if anyone, is going to be designing a "Mystaran" world, through the tools of this game? But I didn't want to jump in at the deep end on that one yet -- lots of abilities and spells to wrestle with -- so I decided to get my feet wet by bringing back the original D&D prestige class: The Thief-Acrobat. Or, in 3E, simply the Acrobat. Note that I no longer have access to "Unearthed Arcana," so this is based on the 3E PHB, the 2E Acrobat kit from "The Complete Thief's Handbook" and my own thoughts. Also included, just because, is a 3E version of the 2E Juggling skill. Comments greatly appreciated. (No, this isn't Mystara-specific, but once I'm happy with the final version, I'm going to include it IMC and probably submit it to Shawn's and Eric Noah's Web sites.) --- Acrobat Prestige Class Acrobats are entertainers and athletes found in many cultures although more than one thieves guild has been known to count a few amongst its members, where they serve as specialized cat burglars. While they resemble monks in many ways, their training is less structured and focused on the results instead of a particular philosophy or religion. Acrobats do what they do out of a desire to improve their craft, to entertain or to enrich themselves in some manner. Although any race can become an acrobat, in practice, most dwarves find the idea to be undignified and a waste of time, many elves find the craft to be somewhat childish, and half-orcs tend to look down on acrobats as weaklings and fools. REQUIREMENTS Balance Ranks: 8 Jump Ranks: 8 Tumble Ranks: 8 Heroic Feats: Dodge, Mobility THE ACROBAT Hit dice: d6 Level Att. Bonus Fort. Ref. Juggling (Dex; Trained Only; Acrobat Only) Use this skill to entertain and, in rare cases, in combat. No DC is required to entertain with this skill, except with spectacular stunts -- juggling cats, eating an apple in mid-air and so on. This skill can also be used to aid the Deflect Arrows feat, with every rank of Juggling over 5 adding a +1 synergy bonus to attempts to deflect missiles. CLASS FEATURES Weapon and armor proficiency: Acrobats are skilled in the use of all simple weapons. None of their special class abilities can be used when wearing anything more than light armor, although they are not trained in the use of any armor, or shields. Armor Class Bonus: Using a combination of their Tumbling skills, an acrobat can improve their dodge bonus to their armor class. The bonus is equal to their Tumbling score - 8. Thus, an acrobat with Tumbling rank 10 has a +2 armor class dodge bonus. Evasion: An acrobat can avoid even magical and unusual attacks by virtue of their ability. If an acrobat makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, the acrobat instead takes no damage. Evasion may only be used if the acrobat is wearing light armor or no armor. It is an extraordinary ability. In the likely event the acrobat already has this ability, they gain Improved Evasion, and takes only half damage on a failed saving throw. Deflect Arrows: At third level, the acrobat gains the Deflect Arrows feat (page 81 in the Player's Handbook) for free, even if they do not have the prerequisites. Improved Jump: At fifth level, an acrobat's jumping distance, vertical or horizontal, is not limited according to his height. (See page 70 in the Player's Handbook for the description of the Jump skill.) Slow Fall: Starting at second level, an acrobat in arm's reach of a wall when falling can use that wall to slow their descent, treating the fall as though it was 20 feet shorter than it actually is. The ability improves 10 feet every two levels, until at 10th level, they can fall any distance without damage. This ability can be used in conjunction with Tumbling to further lessen damage from a fall. Improved Tumbling: At seventh level, an acrobat gets a permanent +5 bonus to all Tumbling checks. Improved Evasion: At 10th level, an acrobat can improve their evasion skills even further, taking only half damage on a failed saving throw. If they already have improved evasion, having gained it either through the acrobat class or another, the evasion ability improves still further: The acrobat takes only one quarter damage on a failed saving throw. Defensive Roll: Once a day, an acrobat can roll with a potentially lethal blow and take less damage from it. When the acrobat would be reduced to 0 hit points or less by damage from a weapon or other blow, the acrobat can attempt to roll with the damage by making a Reflex saving throw (DC = damage dealt) and, if successful, only takes half damage from the blow. The acrobat must be aware of the attack in order to be able to roll with the blow -- if denied his Dexterity bonus to AC, he can't roll. This ability does not work in situations where the evasion ability is appropriate, and that ability cannot help in making a defensive roll. The Perform skill has DC guidelines to indicate how entertaining a performance was; I think Juggling should be the same. (i.e. To really make a decent living as a performer, you need to be able make a DC 15 with Perform checks pretty regularly.) > This skill can also be > used to aid the Deflect Arrows feat, with every rank > of Juggling over 5 adding a +1 synergy bonus to > attempts to deflect missiles. This is a bit rich. I believe the guideline is a flat +2 synergy bonus for having 5+ ranks in a related skill. Doubtless there's a game balance reason for this. > CLASS FEATURES > [snip] > Armor Class Bonus: Using a combination of their > Tumbling skills, an acrobat can improve their dodge > bonus to their armor class. The bonus is equal to > their Tumbling score - 8. Thus, an acrobat with > Tumbling rank 10 has a +2 armor class dodge bonus. Hmm ... something in me cringes at this. This seems to scale up very, very fast. I like the general idea of acrobats getting a better dodge bonus somehow, but they have to /start/ with 8 ranks in Tumble, anyway, so every point they put into the skill is an automatic Dodge bonus. The Evasion and Improved Evasion abilities you put in sound more balanced with the other classes. [snip] > Deflect Arrows: At third level, the acrobat gains the > Deflect Arrows feat (page 81 in the Player's > Handbook) for free, even if they do not have the > prerequisites. Is this similar in power to other prestige classes? Anyway, even if it is, I've never thought of acrobats as being able to deflect arrows. At least, not /all/ acrobats. Perhaps there could be a short list of relevant feats at 3rd they could choose from, regardless of ability restrictions, and have Deflect Arrows as just one of them. > Improved Jump: At fifth level, an acrobat's jumping > distance, vertical or horizontal, is not limited > according to his height. This ability does not work in situations where the evasion ability is appropriate, and that ability cannot help in making a defensive roll. Race: Faenre Hit dice: d4 Class skills: ... Weapon and Armour Proficiency: Windsingers gain no proficiency in any weapon or armour. Armour of any type interferes with a Windsinger's movements, which can cause her spells to fail (if those spells have somatic components). Note that armour check penalties for armour heavier than leather apply to the skills Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Pick Pocket, and Tumble. Also, Swim checks suffer a –1 penalty for every 5 pounds of armour and equipment carried. Alignment: No restriction Spells per Day: Windsinger cast spells, and continue to study magic as they did before. Thus, when a new Windsinger level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in the spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (metamagic or item creation feats, improved chance to use bardic powers, and so on). This essentially means that she adds the level of Windsinger to the level of some other spellcasting class (arcane or not) the character has, then determines spells per day and caster level accordingly. If a character had more than one class capable of casting spells before she became a Windsinger, she must decide to which class she adds each level of Windsinger for purposes of determining spells per day when she adds the new level. (Note: by canon, windsingers use clerical magic. IMC they are normally song mages, or air elementalists). Bonus Feat: As the Windsinger gains additional feats, these may be taken as either metamagic or item creation feats. One feat is gained at 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th. At every level, the windsinger may choose one windsinger spell from the list below. This may then be memorised as a normal spell. Ethan - angry because low sales of the Mystara/oD&D setting material will convert to either ultra-low, or ultra high subscription rates. I don't really think we're in a position to complain. It not only makes good business sense but is most fair to their customers that they release things in decreasing order of popularity. Sure, it may be the case that the AD&D (logo) Mystara stuff was less popular than the OD&D stuff, but I don't expect them to worry about it at that level of thinking. Plus, as Jim said previously (you can read his words on the Mystara web page), they have to determine what's free and how much other stuff costs based on sales records. That's going to be much more hellacious to research for OD&D stuff than that AD&D Mystara stuff. Besides, with Mystara last on the list, I imagine OD&D comes after that so it's not like it makes much difference whether OD&D Mystara and AD&D Mystara are released together. Oh, and B10 Night's Dark Terror simply ROCKS. If you can find it for a price you can afford, buy it immediately. I'm not sure how good the quality of scan will be when it's eventually released online, but you can't match the die-cut counters; fold-out poster map of Sukiskyn which will serve great as a battle grid for minis (it's 5' per 2cm square, close enough to 1" per square to use with 3e combat rules no problem); full color cardstock screen insert with maps, the tapestry; etc. Not to make you suffer or anything :) but if I didn't own it already I'd be willing to pay up to $30 for it ($10 original price) in mint or near-mint condition. The culture of Wendar is greatly different from that of Alfheim. The elves there had a harsh struggle with the elements, and eventually came to live in harmony with the humans of the area. I'd go so far as to have some barbarians among the humans living in the area, and a fair amount of half-elf and elf barbarians living amongst them. Wendar is prime to have a couple of prestige classes in it. There could be a ranger type dedicated to snow and ice, or maybe a new arcane prestige class that makes use of the field from the Elvenstar, much like the Hin Masters operating in the Shires. They could share a prestige class with some other nations, the Plague Lifters (or some such name), a group of clerics dedicated to wiping out plagues and pestilences. They could be the ones that travelled from Karameikos to Thyatis to deal with the mummy rot. They could work in secret in Glantri. Hmmm. Cleric 5/Rogue 4/Plague Lifter 2. I could see it. Oh, and an Ice Mage. Maybe I'll work on these. In addition, more than one thieves guild has been known to count a few amongst its members, where they serve as specialized cat burglars. While they resemble monks in many ways, their training is less structured and is focused on the results instead of a particular philosophy or religion. Acrobats do what they do out of a desire to improve their craft, to entertain or to enrich themselves in one manner or another. Although any race can become an acrobat, in practice, most dwarves find the idea to be undignified and a waste of time, many elves find the craft to be somewhat childish, and half-orcs tend to look down on acrobats as weaklings and fools. Most acrobats were initially rogues, bards or monks. REQUIREMENTS Balance Ranks: 8 Jump Ranks: 8 Tumble Ranks: 8 Feats: Dodge, Mobility THE ACROBAT Hit dice: d6 Level Att. Bonus Fort. Ref. Juggling (Dex; Trained Only; Acrobat, Bard Only) Use this skill to entertain and, in rare cases, in combat. No DC is required to entertain with this skill, except with spectacular stunts -- juggling cats, eating an apple in mid-air and so on -- which are typically DC 20. Special: This skill can also be used to aid the Deflect Arrows feat. Characters with Juggling over 5 add a +2 synergy bonus to attempts to deflect missiles. The Juggling skill can also be used to raise money in the same manner as Perform. CLASS FEATURES Weapon and armor proficiency: Acrobats are skilled in the use of all simple weapons and all thrown weapons. None of their special class abilities can be used when wearing anything more than light armor, although they are not trained in the use of any armor or shields. Armor Class Bonus: Using his Tumbling skills, an acrobat can improve his dodge bonus to his armor class. The bonus is equal to his Tumbling score - 8. Thus, an acrobat with Tumbling rank 10 has a +2 armor class dodge bonus. This bonus cannot exceed the acrobat's class level. Evasion: An acrobat can avoid even magical and unusual attacks by virtue of his training. If an acrobat makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, the acrobat instead takes no damage. Evasion may only be used if the acrobat is wearing light armor or no armor. It is an extraordinary ability. Slow Fall: Starting at second level, an acrobat in arm's reach of a wall when falling can use that wall to slow his descent, treating the fall as though it was 20 feet shorter than it actually is. The ability improves 10 feet every two levels, until at 10th level, they can fall any distance without damage. This ability can be used in conjunction with Tumbling to further lessen damage from a fall. Improved Balance: At third level, acrobats gain a +2 to balance checks and a +4 stability bonus versus being tripped. Improved Jump: At fifth level, an acrobat's jumping distance, vertical or horizontal, is not limited according to his height. (See page 70 in the Player's Handbook for the description of the Jump skill.) Deflect Arrows: At seventh level, the acrobat gains the Deflect Arrows feat (page 81 in the Player's Handbook) for free, even if they do not have the prerequisites. Improved Evasion: At ninth level, an acrobat can improve his evasion skills even further, taking only half damage on a failed saving throw. Defensive Roll: At tenth level, an acrobat can roll with a potentially lethal blow and take less damage from it once a day. Excuse me, I am writing from work and do not have my books with me so my facts may be slightly off. I would also add Ochalea, It not only fits with their East Asianesque culture but also with their general lawful attitude. I will allow Thyatian Monks if they are associated with the Society of Order (a philosophical order in the Church of Thyatis IMC, dedicated to the Lawful Alignments [you know I had a player confused by this]) because of the Societies connections to Ochalean culture. The only place a Thyatian Monk can learn it is in a monastery near Thyatis (where they house the High Philosopher, the leader of the order). I also found some references in GAZ9 about "secluded Alphatian orders of mystics", so Alphatian monks seem to be quite grounded in Mystara materials, too. Sindhi ones are refered to in CoM and Ochalean ones seem likely for RW parallels. Tortle monks seem to ring a bell too; I cannot think of any other references, but it's OK having several different traditions of monks in Mystara, just as there are diverse and independent magic schools. Below is the Icelord prestige class I whipped up for the Wendar area. I'm getting it posted to the Eric Noah 3E boards to get some feedback there too. NB: I tried to cut out all that I could without losing clarity. Dylan G. Icelord Though the elves that inhabited what would one day become Wendar lived through many harsh winters, they were not themselves able to turn their magic over to a true mastery of the environment surrounding them. Their magic, still attuned to the sylvan setting, was quite capable in the pine forests, so the elves limited their activities to the forest and made little attempt to conquer the remainder of the cold landscape. Many humans that lived in the area, however, had long practiced the arts of controlling the very ice that covered so much of the Wendar area. When the elves and humans began to work together, this secret art was shared, and somewhat enhanced by the magical knowledge of the elves. Preciously channeled only by the adepts and clerics of the human tribes, the art is now practiced by wizards as well. Hit Die: d4. Requirements: Race: Elf, Half-elf or Human from Wendar. Knowledge (Arcana): Rank 4 Knowledge (Nature): Rank 8 Spellcasting: Must be able to cast two spells involving cold (this can include spells that protect from the effects of cold). Saves: Will good, Reflex poor, Fortitude poor. Attack Bonus: As Wizard. Special Abilities: (Spells are cast as divine spells, require no material components and are cast according to the icelord level of the character.) 1st: Ray of Frost 3/Day, Resist Elements 1/day. Wisdom bonus on Saving Throws. 2nd: Ice Shape (as stone shape) 1/day. 3rd: Gain resistance to cold equal to double icelord level. 4th: Ice Shape 2/day. Cone of Cold 1/day. 5th: +4 competence bonues to social interactions with ice creatures. 6th: Ice Shape 3/day. Resist Elements 2/day. 7th: Cone of Cold 2/day. 8th: Ice shape 4/day. Otiluke's Freezing Sphere 1/day. 9th: Summon large ice elemental for 15/icelord level 1/day. 10th: Cone of Cold 3/day. Ice Shape 5/day. Summon 2 elementals. Class Skills: Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Knowledge (Arcana) (Int), Knowledge (Nature) (Int), Spellcraft (Int) Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier. Class Features All of the following are class features of the icelord prestige class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Icelords are proficient will all simple weapons, the light hammer, the light and heavy pick and the longspear. Icelords gain no proficiency in any armor. Spells per Day: The icelord continues training in magic as one of her previous classes. Thus, when a new icelord level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (improved chance of controlling or rebuking undead, metamagic or item creation feats, and so on). This essentially means that she adds the level of icelord to the level of some other spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day and caster level accordingly. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before she became an icelord, she must decide to which class she adds each level of icelord for purposes of determining spells per day when she adds the new level. In the case of sorcerers that become icelords, when they gain the ability to learn a spell of a new level, they must pick a spell from the list below. If the character already knows all the spells listed for a given level, then she may choose a spell as any other sorcerer would. 2nd Level: Resist Elements, 3rd Level: Protection from Elements, Sleet Storm 4th Level: Ice Storm, Wall of Ice, Fire Shield 5th Level: Cone of Cold 6th Level: Otiluke's Freezing Sphere 7th Level: Simulacrum 8th Level: Horrid Wilting ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 22:31:05 +1000 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: shawn stanley Subject: Re: New "Mystara" adventure at Starflung ... The inconsistency has to do with the elven preferred class. The PHB lists this as wizards. The PHB also lists elves as tending toward the chaotic and wizards as tending toward the lawful, and then to top it off it says that these chaotic elves even claim to have invented this lawful wizardry! Yikes! Maybe I'm being overly critical, but this just doesn't make sense to me. I think somebody brought this topic up a couple of weeks ago, and suggested that the preferred class for elves should be Sorcerer. I have a suggestion that kind of builds upon this. I'm going to handle the elven preferred class in the following way: 1) Back at the dawn of elven civilization on Mystara, all of the elves revered nature and worshiped Ordana. These elves had a preferred class of Druid. Low level druids have several special abilities that I think fit very nicely with elves. They can communicate with animals, travel through the underbrush without leaving a trace, and are also allowed an animal companion. At higher levels they have the ability to shapechange into an animal form. I think these powers kind of lend a 'fey' feeling to these elves. 2) As the elves came into contact with Blackmoor and their technology, they started to adopt new ways. They became less chaotic, and more structured in their lives, and they also drifted away from nature and the immortal Ordana. These elves quickly applied a structure to their magical nature, and therefore their preferred class is Wizard. 3) After Blackmoor fell there was a resurgence of the nature philosophy. Many elves wanted to return to their old ways. They neglected the lawful ideals that had made many of them powerful wizards, but could not entirely ignore their arcane powers. These elves have a preferred class of Sorcerer. Now I can have elves with different preferred classes, depending greatly upon their heritage. For example most of the Alfheim elves would end up under category #3. They followed Ilsundal or Mealidin to a return of the old ways, but still have not been able to completely shed the influence of Blackmoor. A few of the Alfheim (major) clans might have different preferred classes however. The Longrunners (IIRC) are great wizards, and even have several wizardly colleges. These elves would have a preferred class of Wizard. Yet other clans (like the Faedil and Grunalf) seem to have a stronger connection with nature. Perhaps these clans have reverted to the old ways and therefore elves from these clans will have a preferred class of Druid. Of course the smaller clans could each fall under any of these 3 categories. Shadow elven society seems to be pretty lawful (or at least neutral) and so I suppose one could make an argument for either Wizards or Sorcerers being the preferred class for these elves. Druid is right out though. The Shyie in Alphatia might have a preferred class of wizard, while those that moved to Norwold might have one of Sorcerer. I think I would treat most other elves (like the Calarrii (sp?), and those in Wendar) as having a preferred class of Sorcerer. Does anybody see any blatant holes in my logic? What do you think? I was looking to combine the War Mage from Spelljammer with the Militant Wizard from the Wizard's Handbook. Anyway, here is the version of the Battle Mage I've been working on: _____________________________________________________________________ Battle Mage Skilled in both magical and military arts, the battle mage is master of tactical magic. Most battle mages come from militant cultures who seek magic as a tool for conquest and defense. To a battle mage, physical training is just as much a necessity as magical talent. It is this skill in combat that gives them the edge over most other spellcasters, and makes them a potent ally or a deadly foe. Because of the focus on combat-oriented arcane spells, most battle mages are Wizards or Sorcerers. Though there is nothing preventing Bards from joining their ranks. Clerics and most other spellcasters won't be able to become a battle mage, due to the arcane spell requirements. However a Cleric of a god of magic might be allowed to become a battle mage under certain circumstances. Battle mages seldom work together, most are leaders of their own army, military advisors to a powerful monarch, or mercenaries-for-hire who go where the money is. Yet those few who do join together are usually part of an elite military unit of some sort, used to intimidate rival nations and perform dangerous missions. One thing is for certain, when battle mages gather together things tend to get ugly. Hit Die: d6 Requirements To qualify to become a battle mage, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Spellcasting: Ability to cast arcane spells of at least 3rd level, and must know at least seven of the following spells Shield, Mount, Mage Armor, True Strike, Mage Armor, Protection from Arrows, Endurance, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace, Phantom Steed, Greater Magical Weapon, Haste, Keen Edge, or Slow. Class Features Weapons and Armor Proficiency: Battle mages are proficient in all simple weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields. Note that armor check penalties for armor heavier than leather apply to the skills Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Pick Pocket, and Tumble. Spells per Day: Battle mages continue to learn develop their spellcasting skills as well as their combat prowess. Thus at any level he gets the "+1 level of existing class" feature, the battle mage gains new spells per day as if he had gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, get any additional benefits of progressing in that class, such as bonus metamagic or item-creation feats, etc. Combat Insight: Battle mages are very perceptive in combat. At 1st level they gain the ability to anticipate and react to their opponents moves in battle before they happen. By watching an opponent fight for at least 1 round, a battle mage may gain either a +2 to hit the opponent, or a +2 to his AC vs. that opponent. One such opponent may be chosen for every four levels he gains as a battle mage. Thus he may pick two opponents at 5th level, and three opponents at 9th level. Spell Accuracy: At 3rd level a battle mage gains the ability to better aim his spells in combat. This feature gives him a +4 to hit with any attack roll that must be made as part of a spell, such as a ranged touch attack needed hit with Melf's Acid Arrow. Armor Casting: As a battle mage progresses in level, he develops the ability to wear armor without it interfering with his somatic spells. Whenever this feature is gained, the battle mage may wear the armor type listed with it, without incurring any chance of Arcane Spell Failure. Improved Combat Casting: At 7th level battle mages develop their skills at casting defensively further. The gain an over all bonus of +6 while casting on the defensive. As well, they may add their Intelligence bonus to their AC for the round, as they have perfected their ability to watch for attacks while casting. Opportunity Casting: At 10th level a battle mage gains the ability to cast a spell when he could normally make an attack of opportunity. If he can make multiple attacks of opportunity, due to feats, magic, etc., only one may be used to cast a spell. The spell must have a casting time no greater than 1 round. Opportunity Casting is an extraordinary ability. There is a certain amount of restrictions on a "free" cleric that has no church--they have no church to back them up, even though they can pick any two domains. For C of K, going by the boxed set book, I'd pick Law for sure. That would rule out Chaos. They wouldn't have Good or Evil, because they seem primarily neutral. As a state church , they have certain roles to fill, so they should have Protection, Healing and War. That's probably about it. For C of T, it's more likely, I think, that onewould specifically venerate one of the big 3, Halav, Zirchev or Petra. But as the church as a whole: Good (from the boxed set), Luck (they're very superstitious), Protection and Healing because they have the role of looking after the Traladaran people. As far as PCs go, this is probably a good selection. You can get Healing, which is what the clerics are there for anyway. War is good, because the C of K has that Order of the Griffon and is pretty militant. If you want to be a Traladaran and be militant, you can just follow Halav. Otherwise, you've got Luck, which is pretty good, I think, and follows with the peasant belief, or protection, which is another traditional strong suit of the cleric. Nothing flashy like Fire or Magic, but there are always specific Immortals for that. Does the Player want to play a flashy cleric or a cleric of the church of the people? If they want to pick from other domains, they will have to become clerics of a particular deity inside the pantheon, which does not forfeit the need of paying respect and homage to the other Immortals in the pantheon. A cleric of the Northern Reaches pantheon, could thus choose from Law, Chaos and Good, as all of these can be conceived as pantheon alignments (I'm thinking of the Immortals IMC), with the usual limitation imposed by his own alignment as the PH goes. Then, he could choose one from Viuden's domains, something like War, Knowledge and Magic (that's IMO domains). If he wanted to have something like War and Knowledge (no alignment domain), he would have to be a cleric of Viuden. If he wanted to pick Protection, he would have to be a cleric of Fedor and Fedara (they have that domain IMO). Just a quick rules question that popped up in my mind today: Immortal AM doesn't negate the magic pluses of weapons or armors, so I wonder, does an A-M Ray (like that of the beholder) negate them as well as normal magic effects?? So, for example, if a fighter with +5 short sword goes against a beholder and is targeted by its AM ray, is his sword treated as +5 or as a normal sword as long as it stays within the Anti Magic Ray? It just occurred me that a vampire allied with a beholder would be most dangerous, since he'd be immune to everything (can be hit only with +1 weapons) as long as he remains inside the beholder's ray... That, IMO, is a given and since that is the basic principle it would follow that even in a situation where some sort of critter is in an anti-magic field or zone (such as one produced by a beholder's eye ray), one of two things apply: 1) Either that critter also loses whatever "magical"-based immunities and powers it has (such as ability to turn into a gasseous cloud, and immunity to non-magic weapons) OR, if you don't like that 2) Magical weapons lose their "pluses" and whatever other magical powers they have while they're in the AM field, BUT they retain their ability to hit creatures at the level of their nominal magical bonus (so, if one had a creature that could only be hit by +3 or better weapons standing in a DMZ, a Dead Magic Zone, and a fighter brings his +4 Sword into the zone, the sword loses its +4 bonus while in that zone BUT retains the ability to hit that creature). Whatever of those two choices which works best in your campaign I'd say is fine. But (to switch to AD&D rules for a moment, but this analogy would apply in similar OD&D circumstances I think), I don't think a situation where a creature that can only be hit by magical weapons goes walking around covered in a Anti-Magic shell all the time should be allowed to make that monster effectively invincible. So I'm not sure one should focus on that. Secondly, while in this particular situation the course of action would be to deal with the Beholder first (thus eliminating the AM Ray), the general principle that AM would make the vampire invulnerable is still a bad one, because there are cases where a Beholder wouldn't be needed (as I went into in my own reply). I personally am pretty lose in allowing rules to be "gamed", but only up to a certain point, and situations that produce invincibility are just right out in my view - if one plays it that way (where in the AM field weapons lose their ability to hit creatures only hit by magical weapons), then the logical conclusion is that if the field "deadens" magic to that extent, then it also deadens the (magical, since these abilities are surely super-natural) immunity to non-magical weapons (and thus in this case the vampire would be be better off being outside the ! ! magic field). This is the interpretation that would be fully consistent with the interpretation wherin weapons lose their ability to hit creatures only hit by magic weapons. And, also clearly, the vampire would lose his ability to turn into gasseous form while in the field, and it could be argued he'd lose his ability to regenerate. . .the whole thing leads to a series of quandry's/problems that would bog play down in debate and speculation. Let's be honest as GM's we can kill the party whenever we want to, but staging high powered challenging encounters is a mite harder, well for me anyway ;^). As long as you throttle back a litle if the players are getting knobbled (by the vampire moving out of the area of effect, or the beholder closing it's main eye to bring others to bear etc) and the players enjoy it, and of course it's consistent with the gameworld as a whole, why not present them with such juxtapositions? Agreed on the gaseous form and I'll grant the regen failing too, as well as the charm ability and the summoning of animals etc. . .the whole thing leads to a series of quandry's/problems that would bog play down in debate and speculation. Not for long, "My game, My rules!", has long been the caveat of all the GM's in my group. As long as sxuch matters are dealt with consistently by the GM in question it's usually the house rules which migrate from campaign to campain, and world to world, rather than some of the more esoteric 'canon', for 2E in particular. I would suggest that if one really insists on setting up a situation like this, the best person to ask about how to adjudicate Anti-Magic/Dead Magic fields/zones in these cases would be Skip. > Well I could but if he disagrees with my interpretation I'll just ignore him so why bother? You just have to make sure that your PCs are powerful enough and the players smart enough to deal with the encounter and make it fun and not just unfair. Some notes and ideas about that encounter: If the beholder has to keep focusing his A-M ray on the vampire, that means that players can more easily attack it with magic from other angles. An unallied beholder could whip around constantly to re-aim, but there's only so well the vamp and it could coordinate when party members are getting on the side of the beholder opposite the vamp, for instance. So, while the vampire is doing great, the beholder is MUCH more vulnerable while providing defense. In fact, I'm not sure the beholder would like this arrangement one bit. Remember that some magic can be used to indirectly damage opponents by creating objects or conditions in the environment that are harmful, rather than directing magic straight at the opponent. For instance, clobbering them over the head: you might teleport a large heavy object above their heads. You might polymorph a section of ceiling above them to create a cave in. You might lightning bolt a large tree in such a way to make it fall and possibly clobber. You can use timestop to rig all sorts of environmental hazards. (Is that a simple weapon? I don't have my phb handy) Regarding Spellcasting levels. I think the Sorcerer abilities would probably be more appropriate rather then adding spellcasting levels. Weapons, spells, and items are specifically mentioned in the monster description, armour isn't. Yes I'm fully aware of just how fine that would be cutting it, but I do actually seem to remember someone asking about that maybe 15 years ago at University. I was thinking of making it a prestige class, as by the gaz they receive spells. The requirement to join would be joining the guild, and a high skill rank - thus expert merchants could join (and probably would make up the majority of the members). > >Ylaruam - (Dervish), Order of the lance, Order of the mace, Order of > >the spell > > Magian Fire-Worshipper might be a good one. I see the witch/hedge wizard as being not very sophisticated, so it wouldn't make a good prestige class. I don't have runecasters IMC, using the gaz system for giving runes to priests.
