Leptar is a minor Entropic Immortal that was opposed to Chardastes. I stringed together the evil clerics in the B11 and B12 modules along with the chapel of chaos in B2 all as a network of Leptar's in Karameikos. I actually set B5 outside of Karameikos, in Darokin, but there Leptar's influence was waning, as the monastery decayed. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 00:53:17 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Herve Musseau Subject: Re: Non-WOTI timeline MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii From: Mike Harvey >Does anyone have an almanac-style timeline for the years AC 1000 to AC 1009? Using petitions, home-written adventures to be published by the RPGA, and other means, these people are diligently trying to get our favourite campaign world published once again. Want to join in on the action? We can always use an extra hand! Contact Jeff Daly (jdaly@friend.ly.net) for more information. Alphatian Gazetteers Alphatia, empire of intrigue and mystery. In all of TSR's official products concerning this vast empire, very little information was actually given concerning what goes on in the various kingdoms that comprise this great empire, or even what these kingdoms are like. This group is trying to change this by writing up short gazetteers describing the various cities of each of these kingdoms, major political players, as well as a general feel for what each of these realms is like. There's plenty of room for your imagination here, and there is so much left to do! Contact Jeff Daly (jdaly@friend.ly.net) or Geoff Gander (au998@freenet.carleton.ca) for more information. Ancient Mystara Although "official" sources say the first great civilisation was Blackmoor, some sages realise that this is not so. Great empires and heroes flourished, and fell, in a time long before the men of Blackmoor placed stone upon stone. What remains of these ancient realms today? Do the obsidian spires of ancient Y'hog still rise high, somewhere beneath the seas, do the men of fabled Lhomarr still live upon this world, and what of the great artifacts of yore that were lost in those ancient times? If you are interested in adding more detail to a Mystara of long ago, or of creating remnants of that time for the present day, send an email to Geoff Gander (au998@freenet.carleton.ca), Shane Henry (shane.henrymml@aol.com) or James Mishler (mystaros@aol.com). Davania Team Davania, the forgotten continent. This phrase no longer applies, as year by year more explorers bravely head south, probing deeper into forgotten jungles and hellish deserts, uncovering remnants of empires long dead, and those still living. These are realms beyond the knowledge of even the brightest sages, different from those of the "Known World." We've already finished one DM's guidebook already, and another is in the works. If you are interested in developing new cultures or ideas for this fascinating continent, contact Geoff Gander (au998@freenet.carleton.ca) for more information. Underocean What lurks under the seas of Mystara? Far more than a realm of the deeps, Underocean is home to a vast range of interesting races and cultures. Witness the turmoil as the kingdoms of the merrow and the tritons fight off insidious hordes of devilfish, observe the aquatic elves fashion wonders only dreamed of by land dwellers. While the lands of Mystara are vast, those lying under the sea are still greater. Join Aaron Nowack (anowack@juno.com) as he plumbs the depths on the world. He is currently working on Expanding and Revising the Underocean timeline (1010-1015), Hollow Moon Devilfish, and the history of the Sea Peoples. If you are interested in helping out, drop him an email... Mystaraspace Project Does Mystara have its own Green Men? This group of discussion is trying to find out! Join it to flesh out the planets and the secrets of Mystara's Voidspace, linking it with other canonical and new sources for both Mystara and other TSR settings. Knowledge of Spelljammer is good but not required: what you should bring here is Fantasy and Unlimited Imagination! Contact Marco Dalmonte (mdalmonte@hotmail.com). Cyclopaedia Mystara The goal is to develop a comprehensive encyclopaedia of the world, consisting of articles indexed alphabetically and topically. Topics will range from continents and empires down to villages, NPCs, and magic items. Hopefully much of the existing information created by the MML can be incorporated, and the encyclopaedia will also link to individual websites to provide contrasting viewpoints on various subjects. Finally, it will provide extensive references to canon material published by TSR, as well as fan-created articles, so will serve as a one-stop index for all information related to a given topic. We have also been discussing the possibility of "donating" the finished work to TSR for reference and possible inclusion in future Mystara products. We'd appreciate your discussion here on the list; we are still working out the format, content, and legal details. Also if anyone wants to volunteer to coordinate a particular topic, or wants to contribute articles, please contact Mike Harvey (bing@iccom.com). Hollow World References This group aims to provide additional detail on the various cultures of the Hollow World, in the form of gazetteer reference documents. Basic socio-cultural aspects of each people will be covered, as well as NPCs, and other interesting information to aid the DM in fleshing out these hitherto undetailled areas. If you are interested in contributing to this group as a writer, or just helping out, contact Mischa Gelman (megst19+@pitt.edu). Mischa is interested in working on references for the Antalians, the Icevale elves, the Oltec, and the Traldar. The Immortal Project The Immortal Project is aiming to describe all Immortals of Mystara in the format of Faiths & Avatars - a detailled description which tells briefly about each Immortal's priesthood, granted spells and powers, dogma, rituals, church activities, worshipper bases, etc. Contact Aleksei Andrievski (solmyr@kolumbus.fi) for more information. The Ambassadors Project What the ambassador project is trying to do is to give a bank of Mystaran NPCs for that too often ignored archetype - the ambassador. What we started with, is listing the ambassadors known in canon, and then we started giving a general idea of common characteristics of ambassadors from different nations in the Known World (and that is to be the focus at the present time). Specific NPCs are still nonexistent. The idea is for people to read the guidelines and send in NPCs they wrote up themselves in order to fill in the blanks. Contact Ohad Shaham (ohadshm@inter.net.il) for more information. The Nightmare Project What dark secrets exist in the spaces between the stars, in forgotten tomes hidden far from the sight of mortals? Can it be that the Immortals themselves are not the ultimate powers in the multiverse? Half-forgotten legends, and suggestive glimpses of things rarely seen by most eyes, point to a more ominous, darker conclusion regarding the assumptions we have concerning the world of Mystara. Not all things are as they seem... Contact Guilio Caroletti (scarole@tin.it) for more information. Glantrian Personnel Division Are you interested in filling in the gaps concerning the most famous (and infamous) Glantrian personalities? Join the Glantrian Personnel Division! The GPD tries to stay in line with TSR and net-generated materials. As Glantri is a land of intrigue, it is important to have a thorough web of deception, with the intriguers and the victims, deceivers and the deceived for the players to explore. Anyone can contribute to the archives, but before doing so, why not contact Markus Montola (montola@iki.fi) for additional details? The Darokin Project Also led by Aaron Nowack, this project aims to provide additional information, with which to aid DMs in making Darokin a more lifelike place in which to campaign. Current initiatives include finishing the Houses of Darokin, expanding upon Darokinian history, and providing more information about the nation's government. If you are interested, contact him at (anowack@juno.com). Thyatis Character Reference This group is developing more information on the Empire of Thyatis, for the benefit of players and DMs alike. They provide information on history, geography, religion, literature, politics, military matters, and other elements of Thyatian society which will spice up and campaign - and make for some interesting reading. I've already used some stuff from Herve and Fabrizio's timeline, but PC actions are significantly affecting the "scripted events". Here's a synopsis of what's happened so far: 3 high level PCs from Norwold finally decided to investigate the twisted trees in Spring 1007. I ran them through a modified "Grand Tour" and "Egg of the Phoenix" from the Alf. GAZ, plus had them deal with numerous creatures that had escaped the bad magic pts. They were able to uncover the Plot and stop the assassinations of Beasthunter and Redsword. Some other SEs did manage to get a book from Mealidor with info on the Egg, which they are trying to recover to burn the capital. They were also able to rescue the poisoned Lynnwyll, but Carlisan has not yet been dealt with. Next, they will go down into the SEs tunnels as in the "Root of the Trouble". I'm going to expand on this by having them explore some of the SE realm, and encounter the armies gathering beneath Alfheim. They seem to want to launch a crusade against the SEs and hopefully reverse the spell killing the forest. However, other events will most likely draw them away before they can fully accomplish this. Which leaves us with the SE armies ready to invade, but with Alfheim fully aware of what is happening. I think a war between the elves is likely, as I doubt Alfheim would be abandoned w/o a fight, with the knowledge that the SEs are responsible for their troubles. It might eventually come to the evacuation and SE takeover, or a prolonged stalemate could develop. Any ideas from people who have campaigned in this area? Any good war scenarios? How about adventures behind the SE lines searching for a way to stop the spell? I'd probably make it second level, heal 1d8 for free and additional dice of damage healed/sacrificed at the clerics desire up to some maximum which I wouldn't set until playtesting. This makes the spell useless as just a normal heal as there's Cure Moderate (unless you aren't using 3E or the spell variant in which case it gives a cleric a second level cure spell which does only minor healing unless the cleric gives up his own HP). ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 15:12:09 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Andrew Theisen Subject: Re: Alfheim Scenario In-Reply-To: <0056750027922720000002L502*@MHS> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 04:25 PM 12/8/00 -0500, you wrote: >I was wondering if anyone had ideas for an alternate Alfheim vs. SE scenario >during WotI. For one thing, I agree with Dave that the acting left a bit to be desired - Profion (Jeremy Irons) was a bit overdone, while the Empress (can't remember her real name) was rather flat as an actress; no facial expressions, and she looked like she was reading the lines off of a cue card off-screen. Story-wise, however, some extra scenes would have made the movie a little more enjoyable than it was. For one thing, what quest is a quest without some sort of campfire scene, where the adventurers get to know each other a bit better? IMC, that's when most of my PCs interact, argue, etc., since they usually go their separate ways in cities. Also, (just IMO) no adventure is complete without a night encounter on the road or two. The part where they were traversing the forest would have been ideal - maybe some giant spiders (or something) lower themselves from the branches and attack the party. Some sort of "team-building" event was needed, IMO. Another thing I must mention is that, if the group is supposed to be a party, why is Ridley doing everything? Sure, Snails is also a thief, but Ridley certainly seems to be the more competent one, and the elf, dwarf, and mage are basically reduced to bit parts. For example, when they were approaching the dragon temple (to get the staff), it would have been better (IMO) if the whole party could have entered the complex, avoided some traps, fought a couple of beasties, and then approached the entrance to the final chamber, only to find that Ridley had to continue it on his own. That, at least, would have made it look more than a one-man show. Finally, Marina (the mage) was quite ineffective. If she could cast hold spells (2-3rd level, IIRC), and dimension door, then why was she basically in the way in combat, and not casting sleep on some opponents (or some other minor spell to help the party)? I suppose one could argue that, as an aristocrat more used to filing tomes than frying orcs, she would not really have the "combat sense" required to be an effective party member in the heat of battle. But anyway... I don't want anyone to think I hated the movie - I enjoyed it - but I think that, if WotC/Hasbro/whatever was hoping that this movie would serve as the vehicle to reinvigorate RPGs and draw in thousands of new gamers, well, that may be hoping for a little too much. Overall I'd give it an average rating - definitely worth a look on the big screen, but I would not suggest that you hold your hopes too high. WOW! That was one roasty, toasty Stefan thread! I also looked at Jen Guerra's mini-Gaz on Traladara. Much fun! I really enjoyed the alternative views on 'Good old' Karameikos. It did get quite annoying and tiresome once it got to the flame stage, but all in all I found it useful. Please, Jen, don't think that people don't find these sorts of ideas and discussions useless! At the same time, your concluding remarks made it sound to me as if those who didn't like alternative views on Stefan were the sole perpetrators of canon-thumping and dogmatism. I have to say, a few people I don't care to name got extremely pedantic, vitriolic, and hubristic, IMHO, and I felt it was coming a tad more from the 'Stefan is a self-serving bastard camp.' All that aside, I have to say that seeing Stefan through the eyes of a Traladaran partisan and Thyatian loyalist will be of great use to me in an upcoming Karameikos-based campaign I'm starting soon. It has been my intention to provide the players with very sparse, neutral information about the history and options, and then when they choose to be Traladaran, Thyatian, half-breed, elvish, whatever, I'm going to give them a brief history of the place that reflects their biases. My (AC1000) Duke Stefan will be, as in previous campaigns, the generally decent and lawful guy who nonetheless has many flaws and the opportunistic/treacherous streak characteristic of any Thyatian worth his salt. But that's not how any of my players will see him! The MML exchange has given me plenty of ideas on how to make him look like a saint and a devil! It reminds me of the discussion in DotE on Thyatian treachery, where it suggests three levels of treachery, the worst if you're running a campaign with Alphatian PCs, the other two more for Thyatian or other PCs, depending on how much you want them to be paranoid about their siblings slipping a dagger into their side at parties. Things were so new when GAZ1 came out, but it would have been nice if later products, esp. KKoA presented Stefan in alternative lights. I have never tried to acquire that product, since from what I've heard it offers virtually nothing useful to someone who has everything else on Karameikos. Anyway, thanks to all parties for exchange, and especially you Jen, for your mini-Gaz. Even though things got a bit too toasty for my tastes in the discussion, I was able to scrape off the charred bits and butter it up just fine :) Magus Coeruleus dleland@cogsci.ucsd.edu cogsci.ucsd.edu/~dleland ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 17:21:32 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: "David S. I have read that there is a group working on a Mystara rules conversion to 3e. I have lurked on the eGroup list for a brief period even. I guess I am wondering if there is any Project Group developing/detailing the Mystaran multiversal model, and secondly are they or anyone else updating any necessary details to 3e. I always go into movies expecting that they won't be anything great unless I've had several people who I trust and tend to agree with tell me that it is great. Still I was sorely disappointed. My husband and I came up with the following Siskel & Ebert style summaries: Me: Thumbs Down: Thin plot, poorly executed Him: Thumbs Down: This should have been an HBO special. I agree there were a few good points, but not enough to hang a module on, let alone a full featured movie. As someone else mentioned, there's no real Characterization in the movie -- one of the key elements to roleplaying, and their "Party" kept separating, either by choice or circumstance, when most D&D games revolve around the growing friendship and team work of the group. And finally, the worst offense of all ... They had "Guard Beholders" working for the bad guy, who chased after the sound of a thrown rock for heavens sake!!! Aggggh!! Jenni A.M. I was never a big fan of Planescape's handling of the planes. This may sound strange, but the Mystaran planar model is very fresh and new to me. It is different enough to throw my players off balance. However, all the info is scattered across so many sources it seemed a ponderous doing to try and understand it all by myself. So the crux of my post was mostly the hope that there was a "Gaz-like" project to consolidate all Mystara planar information. I am under no illusions that it would be considered non-canon, just as the Traladara mini-Gaz is non-canon. I really liked James Mishler's post on The Dimension of Nightmares. I'm a big fan of HPL and an even bigger fan of Dark Sun and this seemed (to me) to have a nice flavoring of both--at least the Dark Sun planar model. Many of the other posts there got me thinking about my presumptions of the planes that AD&D foisted on me. Maybe I shouldn't have even tossed 3e into the question, but I guess I did because it is what I will be using and I thought there might be some hyper-minor technicality somewhere that might have to be "fixed." Anyway... Well, even with low expectations I was pretty dissapointed. The dialogue was atrocious, many of the props were ugly (although many sets looked good), the acting was abominable, and it dragggggged with scenes that weren't all that exciting or funny. So as not to be completely negative, some of the effects were pretty cool, and the action was adequate (but nothing mind-blowing). Thank goodness the movie did not take itself too seriously; in fact, if they turned it into a farce it might have been even better, but of course that's not what they wanted to do with it. My friends and I agreed that any of us could have come up with a better script. With so many good D&D novels out there, it's a shame they didn't base a movie on one of those. It probably would have been much better. I'd say don't bother seeing the movie unless you can get together a party of at least 4, and enjoy heckling and MST3King bad movies. If you can and do, however, I recommend getting intoxicated to lower your standards and inhibitions first. ;) Magus Coeruleus dleland@cogsci.ucsd.edu cogsci.ucsd.edu/~dleland ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 22:49:48 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Jost Westenberg Subject: map of the multivers MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0019_01C0648D.D4CC50A0" ------=_NextPart_000_0019_01C0648D.D4CC50A0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0019_01C0648D.D4CC50A0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Encoded: Changed encoding from 8bit for 7bit transmission hello, it si long ago when i posted my last message, but i read the list al= l the time. it is the best mailing list i know. and here my new question: has anyone made a MAP of the Multiver with it OUTER PLANTS ?? i know it is not realy easy i have read the Master-Box, the Immortel-Box an= d Wrath of the Immortel-Box and i have a porblem with the 5 great outerplants with adjected dirkt to th= e astral space, in the immortel box stand that each immortel have it=B4s own outerspace, and in the wrath box, stand each great outerplant of the five sheres a home of many immortels of this sphere. can anyone help me and, pleas sorry about my english i=B4m from germany AWT Jost ------=_NextPart_000_0019_01C0648D.D4CC50A0-- ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 16:02:42 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Chris Furneaux Subject: X10 questions MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii How worth getting is X10 if I already own PWA's 1 and 2 and WotI. A true, mega-adventure that will use a lot of playing time. It would fit in good with WotI. The War Machine stuff can get kind of tedious, but I'd say its worth the effort. You'd need the counters for that, but if they're not available, there are ways to come up with replacements. The best part of it is the Battlesystem stuff. There is a scenario in Rockhome, a Karameikos civil war (that deals with the Black Eagle Barony and takes care of some much of the recent topic of choice), and a climactic battle between the AEF (PCs forces) and the Master's Legion of Doom. If your not familiar Battlesystem, its worth getting if you can find it, especially if you use alot of wars in your game. A word of warning though, most Battlesystem games can easily last 12+ hours! I might be able to get you some of the info on the basic rules, but you'd have to come with the counters (easy enough to make, though). I 'd rave some about it, but I have to run. I can get a copy of the battlesystem miniture rules, I saw them yesterday down the road in a 2nd hand bookstore. However playing these games with minitures doesn't appeal to me cause although I could just go into games workshop and buy some of their minitures (warmaster ones)to use for it, they'd cost too much given the limited use I'd have for them. X10 is definitely among the best Mystara modules out there, and I would recommend that every Mystara fan have a copy, since it's fascinating not just from a gaming standpoint but also as the module that really solidified many descriptions of Mystara and paved the way for the Gazetteers. Having said that, I'm not convinced that module is worth $40 at this point. If you look at the WotC site, they promise to make every D&D module available for download at either $2.95 a module or for free. There's no timeline available for Mystara yet, but even if we're absolute last priority, I'm betting, based on their progress so far, that everything will be available by the end of next year at least. The counters and the large, beautiful map are definitely nice to have, but if you can save $37 by using a taped map and counters printed after a download rather than published on cardboard, I'd tend to recommend that option. If you're nearing that part of WotI in your campaign, or if your players are close to finishing X4 and X5, then it might be worth it as an emergency, but if you can wait a year, it sounds like you can save a good chunk of change. That depends a lot on you and your players and where they are and where you want them to go. There are some major differences between the likely outcomes of X10 and the plotline of WotI. For one thing, X10 assumes the Kin Faction is dominant in Ylaruam at the time (although they don't specify this), and Ylaruam is highly likely to ally itself with The Master. This, obviously, is very different from the WDL outcomes of WotI and the almanacs. If you wish to run your players through the war against the Master during this portion of WotI, you could fairly easily make enough up and probably keep it more in line with WotI, but you miss out on the tons of mini-adventures in X10, as well as the descriptions of Darokin's major cities. >How different are the war machine rules given I have >the RC, Compainion set, PWA's 1+2, DotE (with sea and >air machine), and there are some revised war machine >systems on the net. The nice thing about the counters is that they're easily stackable. The have basic war machine stats for each unit, much like the counters in the Ierendi Gaz if you've got that. The map included here is also especially nice because each hex is about an inch across, making it easier to use counters or markers on than the ones in WotI (or anywhere else Mystara-related that I've seen). >Much of this stuff would eventuate IMC anyway, how >much detail does it go into with the scenarios, is it >just like the PWA of WotI sonopsis's or does it have >full detailed plans of attack (not much use in war >machine rules), or is it simply "defend the walls of >draokin" type scenario which if you can get or make >maps of the city and know what the forces involved are >(PWA's) then they are fairly simple to engineer. Okay, I don't know if this has been done yet, but I'll give a basic overview of the module. The players start in Akesoli, where everyone is peaceful and content and certain that they will live happily for ever. Then the nomads attack. The PCs can, if they choose, try to organize a resistance, but it will ultimately be defeated (if not by this wave of attackers, then by the next. They should be unfamiliar with Akesoli, and the streets are chaos anyway, so they basically need to try to find their way to some way out of the city while trying to save (or, depending on PCs' dispositions, rob) as many innocents as possible. Sooner or later the party ends up fleeing via caravan or boat to Corunglain, Akorros, Darokin, or some similar city. Once there, the DDC grabs them up and asks them to undertake a special mission to acquire allies for the war and to try to find the mythical blue knife that can kill Hosadus. Depending on where the PCs look for allies, their personal reputations and/or histories in that country, as well as its disposition toward Darokin, may or may not join one side or the other. In many countries, the PCs face some sort of challenge to win the loyalties of that country (help Stefan defeat the Black Eagle, Kill the dragon that's been killing elves, defeat Moglai Khan in combat, etc.) All the while they are trying to avoid the Master's agents, find the blue dagger, and coordinate the allied attack/defense plans. The most likely alliances, as I remember, are Ylaruam, Ethengar, and The Master vs. Darokin, Alfheim, the Northern Reaches, and the Shires. Karameikos will basically go to whomever wins the civil war (Stefan=Darokin, Ludwig=Hule). The PCs can have a great deal of influence in who joins which side, but the Master's agents are always working as well. >I can get a copy of the battlesystem miniture rules... I don't really remember much about the Battlesystem stuff, but I know i just used the counters. I'll defer to Dan, since he is much more familiar with it. >Any more info would be great, cause I don't want to go >looking and find that given the kiwi dollar I'm paying >a huge amount of money for something that I could "do >without" and play near the same events anyway with the >matterials I do have. as someone said US$40 is a lot >and to me it's about NZ$70 (plus about NZ$20 >shipping), thats 70-90 cans of coke (for perspective). Ouch. That's a lot of money. And right now the new downloads aren't available outside North America, although they're working to change that, so hopefully they will be by the time they get around to Mystara. >What is a reasonable price for the module, esp without >counters? It does depend a lot on how rigidly you want to adhere to WotI. If you want WotI and the PWAs to take precedence, you might want to rewrite a bit of stuff to move the civil war to Ylaruam as the Kin faction (supported by the Master) vies for power, while someting other than civil war presents the challenge in Karameikos. Making your own counters requires paper, a pen or pencil, and about an hour. Trying to make a substitute for the module from scratch just based on WotI and the almanacs would easily take at least 30 hours, so I suppose it really is worth a lot if you would make it from scratch otherwise. Anyway, I'd say the download is worth waiting for if you'll eventually be able to get it :-) Patrick ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 13:45:30 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Chris Furneaux Subject: Re: X10 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X10 is up for action at the moment thats why I asked, I'm going to do without it so here is the auction address http://s1.amazon.co.uk/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y03X5848624X5792842/202-4145445-6719069 There'd been no bids and it was only at US$12.95 minimum (there is a reserve however), but to me it's NZ$50 to get it (cost+shipping) and I can live without it, I'd rather have the 50 cans of coke and the modules in the bookstore down the road at $8 each. --- Patrick Sullivan wrote: > In case there's anyone left on the list who doesn't > know the basic storyline > of WotI and/or X10 and would like to be surprised if > they play through it, > here's a > > > > > > > > That depends a lot on you and your players and where > they are and where you > want them to go. (snip rest) Well, a number of people have already commented on this, so I'll offer a different view. I don't have the X4, X5, or even X10 adventures, although I did see and read the X10 adventure extensively some years ago. Still, I'm playing through WOTI myself, and my campaign reached The Master's invasion of Darokin about six months ago or so... So without X10 I still played a number of 'recruiting adventures' to have the PCs secure allies for Darokin in the war. They didn't learn of the Master's invasion at all until after he had taken Akesoli and Akorros. Then they were asked to secure allies for Darokin because one of the PCs was a prominent member of the DDC. I ran a pretty simple monster-slashing adventure in the Five Shires ("By Merklan's Magic" from Dungeon no.68 in case anyone's interested - Merklan being a Glantrian-trained (unknown to the Hin!) Darokinian wizard relocated to the Shires). The PCs had already done some business in Alfheim, so the elves considered the matter and agreed, as did the halflings. Glantri joined Darokin (as in X10) without being asked. The dwarves of Rockhome agreed to join as well after the PCs had rescued some emissaries they'd sent to a failed dwarven stronghold in the Cruth mountains of Darokin ("Dragon's Delve" from Dungeon no.62). Karameikos was a special case, because I didn't want to start X10's civil war and risk losing Ludwig just yet (I love the fact that the Hin get to kick his rear in the AC1010 almanac far too much for that! :) ). Stefan wanted to help, but he was fearful of the Alphatians attacking his borders with their ships if he sent troops to Darokin, so he told the PCs of his plans for independence (with his opinion of "Thyatis being doomed anyway!" mentioned heavily), then asked them to help Teldon travel to Alphatia and negotiate a treaty with Eriadna (because one of the PCs was that skilled DDC diplomat). They did that, but when they returned to Karameikos, they also had to protect Stefan from assassination attempts, secretly ordered by the Thyatian ambassador (Cornel Osteric, as hinted on p.92 of the K:KoM explorer's guide) and which Ludwig also seemed to have something to do with... The PCs never discovered who were behind it though. With all these forces, the PCs traveled to Darokin City, which was besieged by the Master's forces at the time... I didn't actually play the siege itself (because I didn't have the Darokin gaz at the time), but Aaron Nowack has described a good scenario of it on Shawn's site: Though I didn't use his actual siege, I did base a lot of my descriptions on it (btw, thanks again, Aaron!). I then used War Machine rules to sort out the initial battles between the master and the allied forces, although the allies were driven back by the Manscorpions after their early advances. Then the PCs had to go into the manscorpion lair and kill their king and queen to collapse their hive-structure (which became one of the most intense and xenophobic adventures I've ever run, actually). They did succeed, and then led to allies onto the battlefield yet again. This time the Master unleashed his minotaurs against them and they butchered the allies... for a while! This was fairly important IMC, because one of the PCs actually *was* a minotaur himself (wearing a Hat of Disguise)! I forced him to enter personal combat with the minotaur leader for the end result... If he hadn't won, the minotaur horde would surely have killed all allies on the field! Yet the PC warrior was victorious, though he's true nature was revealed! This, however, meant that the minotaurs bowed to him as he had defeated their leader in single combat, and he could tell them to depart Darokin! The final adventure I ran was the allies' efforts to free Akorros. This was an undercover adventure in which the PCs were contacted by a master thief who asked them to help her (yes, it was a woman) infiltrate the city through some secret tunnels and sabotage the city gates and a few other critical areas so that the advancing allied army could storm the city. It was all a pretty straight-forward adventure of stealth, and to the PCs credit, they did pull it off - even the huge, clumsy minotaur! :) Okay, so I've left out lots of things from this... Why? Because I don't want to kill of my villains! The master may have been defeated, but I prefered to leave him in Sind (or at least Hule) so that he can cause trouble again one day... (same thing with Ludwig in X10's Karameikos plot btw) ;) - The Stalker (Gods! Didn't realize I'd written so much, sorry!) My project is merging X4 and X5 with WotI: PCs are sent in a mission to spy on the Master as Darokin is being ravaged, but I'd rather leave X10 in store for later: Hosadus is not so hardly beaten (PCs will be lucky if they just manage to destroy his avatar) and it can organize a counter-attack: probably around AC1015 or 1016. I was shuffling some possibilities: Aengmor's likelihood to ally with WDL is lesser than that of Alfheim before the Great War; it's more credible that the twisted post-war Glantri does not help Darokin (or better still, the Princes can get divided in choosing whom to support and give room to big political play), unless the attemp of Ethengar invasion of Glantri which appears in the netAlmanacs pits the Principalities against a likely Ethengar-Ylaruam-Master alliance. A Master War, taking profit of the big weakening of Western Brun (and the inner wars among Savage Baronies) makes sense to me... and it's a way of preserving the openness of module X10. Their patron >immortal really doesnt like Loki, and has been >building his forces for several years beforehand. Cool! An idea that I ended up using in WotI is that, since Loki's Hulean forces are acting more or less on the behalf of Atzanteotl, to have the Children of the Tiger (with covert Hulean support and training) attack and conquer a largely undefended Athenos and Port Tenobar at a critical point in the war. Atzanteol also has well-placed followers in the Broken Lands, so I'd recommend that you definitely play up the alliance between Atzanteotl and Loki. You could even make C'Kag or the other humanoid fortress (I can't think of it, but it's the other tower in the Orclands) into a haven for Atzanteotl's cultists. >oh well, I never was much interested in draokin >anyway, and mini-addventures I guess can be made up ok >anyhow. Yeah, if Darokin's only a passing interest, then it's not a huge loss. X10 has the Republic offer successful PCs dominions, but you can easily change that if you don't want them to stay in Darokin. As for the mini-adventures, they are fairly easy to replace, but be careful not to make it too easy on Darokin :-) it sounds like The Stalker had some good ideas along these lines (although, IMO, Glantri should have its hands full with Alphatia and refuse to agree to anything less than a full alliance with Darokin, meaning Darokin's joining them in war vs. Alphatia). >> find the mythical blue >> knife that can kill Hosadus. >I always got the impression it was possible to kill >him in X5, is this changed in X10? is there a >confrontation in X10 and has his stats changed? I'm >also interested if there are any details of this blue >dagger. I don't remember any of the exact details and, unfortunately, but I'm pretty sure they somehow made it so that only the dagger could kill him. I don't have X10 here at school to refer to, and I don't remember the details of the dagger quest. I think there were three pieces to it, which were scattered in the Dragon's lair in Alfheim, the wraiths' lair in the Shires, and one that the agents of the Master had in Ylaruam. That's very sketchy, however. IMC, I decided to remove the blue knife parts from those encounters, instead placing various odd hints of its location. The blue knife is a major part of Mystara's mythology, with various humanoid migrations based on the search for it, and Hosadus' own rise to power precipitated by his own lies about the knife. I think that's detailed in one of the almanacs, but I'm not really sure about that. As for X5, it is possible to kill the Master in that module, but I agree with the recommendation in WotI that it should be incredibly difficult to kill the Master. I changed both X5 and X10 to make it incredibly difficult to destroy him, requiring the use of the blue knife (which the PCs had heard of but never seen) to kill his body, which was hidden much better than his second avatar, the corpse in X5. Of course, the PCs thought that if they could find the blue knife, that alone would be enough to destroy him, and that was based solely on the evidence that hulean agents were so busily looking for it and the DDC claimed to have found various ancient texts claiming this. If Loki is a major antagonist IYC, then I would really recommend against letting the Master be killed by any but the most powerful of characters. >This is what they were going to have to do anyway, >minus the dagger thing. I actually had a lot of fun with the blue knife, making the characters jump each time they saw something blue and playing off the paranoid aspect of the PCs and the Master's agents spying on one another, laying traps for one another, and fighting tooth and nail for each useless clue. >I can download the free stuff at the mo, and got >access to a colour laser printer so I can't wait but >I'm going to have to. IMC, the players were in Sind when the invasion/revolution there took place, and had to race to the border from Sayr Ulan only a step ahead of the Master's mercenaries. Shortly afterwards, the Master's forces besieged Akesoli, but the sea route from Akkoras kept the city well supplied. At this point, Darokin didn't think this was much of a threat (remember, before the war nobody had ever heard of Hule!). The PC's were conscripted into the Darokinian army, and led a ragtag volunteer groupin the mountains around Corran Keep (the party's base of operations), trying to keep the Master's forces from circling Lake Amorsak and besieging Akkoras. They were slowly pushed back, with the final battle taking place at Bronsdale, stopping the Master's northern forces. However, forces circling from around the southern side of the lake reaced Akkoras, andthe two cities quickly fell (due to treachary). Realizing that this was a serious threat, Darokin attached the party to the DDC, and they were first sent to Alfheim to request aid. General Gilfronden, however, was trying to isolate Alfheim from itsallies in preparation for the Shadow Elf invasion, and interfered with thhe effort. ultimatly, the party convinced the elves to send their army to Darokin. Then the party went to Karameikos, where theyhelped in the process of declaring independance, after which Karameikos and the Five Shires agreed to send aid as well. Meanwhile, a massive battle ocured in the hills west of Darokin, and the darokinian's were forced to retreat to the city, which was besieged as the party arrived there. > With all these forces, the PCs traveled to Darokin City, which was > besieged by the Master's forces at the time... After the siege, Darokinian forces moved west, quickly liberating Akesoli and Akkoras, then moving west into Sind, while Karameikan ships ferried troops to the southern shore of Sind. The set the stage for modules X4 and X5. Darokinian forces briefly retook Sayr Ulan, but were later drawn out into the desert and destroyed. Jaibul sent forces to stop the southern army, and the alliance was forcedto withdraw from Sind and take a defensive posture. > Though I didn't use his actual siege, I did base a lot of my > descriptions on it (btw, thanks again, Aaron!). If we want a fairly consistant timeline for the people it should be set during WotI IMO, so that people are still in the right places/ages in the world. However to coin tim's phrase, we need a "sledghammer and a crowbar" to make this one work and the question is how exactly do you want to hit it! A very good reason why I think I'll be leaving X10 be, sledgehammers are a bit messy for my tastes... sooner not introduce the problems IMC, keeps it running smoothly, my PC's cause enough problems as it is. :-) > Okay, so I've left out lots of things from this... > Why? I'm in digest mode, so I'm not seeing this until the next day. With all of the GAZs, WotI, almanacs, etc. you probably could come up with scenarios that would exceed those described in X10, it just depends how much time you want to devote to it. But back in the pre-GAZ days, when I ran this, it was the most detail available on the known world. IMC, the war was called the 2nd Nomad War (X4-5 was the 1st, when the PCs defeated the Master's avatar). NW2 was like 10 years after NW1 when stuff had settled down a bit and the KW was pretty quiet. The PCs thought they would end the war quick by using a wish to bring the Master to them and defeat him right off the bat. But, the X10 Master is far more powerful and he quickly kicked the crap out of all of them, and even took one as a sacrifice for the Soul Gem of Thanatos (one source of his increased power). The "blue knife" is called the Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak, and the Master is more vulnerable to this then other weapons. The PCs and Master's agents are both racing to find this item. Eventually they found it and defeated him and won the war. (Interesting twist on linking this to the humanoids blue knife, btw!). The alliances that someone else described was how it turned out IMC, too (Hule, Ylaruam, Ethengar vs. Darokin, Glantri, Alfheim, etc.) and some other places were neutral. Each country has an Alliance # that shifts toward one side or the other depending on circumstances, including PC actions. The war machine stuff uses the same rules as in other sources. But, there are some specific things for this scenario (and others using a 24-mile hex map with 1 week turns), like when reinforcements arrive, supply lines, building encampments, and a timetable for when forces mobilize, and some other stuff. The large hex map and counters are used to play out the war in detail. It's like a D&D version of Risk or Axis and Allies, kind of. Each counter (1/2" square, I think), has Unit Name at the top, BR and MV at the bottom. MV = 4 hexes/week for infantry, 6/week for cavalry. There are other counters for the PCs, Fatigue, Camps, etc. The rules allowed for up to 3 War Machine rounds per Game Turn (1 week). The whole war took 18 -24 months of game time to complete, IIRC. I forget how much RT it took, but there was *alot* of War Machine gaming that me and one or two players did inbetween the regular gaming sessions. Most of the scenarios involving the PCs in various nations were pretty basic compared to what is in the GAZs, but IMO, still worth it. Individual DMs could always expand certain areas and run side adventures in various countries. There isn't really a scripted timeline and it's more open ended than WotI. IMC, the Master was pretty much defeated, but Specularum was still besiged by Ylaruam when the PCs got Thyatis to throw a few legions into the fray. Thyatis took back a good chunk of the old Traladara for themselves as payment (most of the area west of Kelven). The Battlesystem (BS) scenarios were much more detailed events, and are basically a type of tabletop war gaming. You get to see the troop movements of individual units, and battle startegy becomes important. It does allow for PCs to engage in individual battles, too (3 D&D rounds per BS round). You can even add in terrain pieces and stuff, if you want. We just covered a 4 X 8 foot table with paper and drew the terrain on (but now I've moved up to actual 3D mountains, trees, etc.) The full boxed set comes with cardboard counters to use in place of miniatures. I generally use the counters for the standard troops, and only use actual miniatures for leaders and heroes (PCs, major NPCs, etc.). Some of my best campaign moments have been from a marathon Battlesystem session! I've used it, and the War Machine stuff quite a bit for other wars and climactic battles, IMC. It's not for everyone, though, but my players are pretty into it. The BS counters are 1/2" for halflings & goblins, 3/4" for humans, orcs & dwarves, 1" for larger creatures, and cavalry are rectangular (1.5 x 0.75, maybe). I have several sets and could possibly get copies of army roster sheets or even the counters, maybe. For the X10 war machine counters, I have a program on MS Excel that will print out almost the same thing as the module. I made up a WotI scenario for the IoD war and used the same rules as in X10. My file has info for Alphatia and Thyatis, but it could easily be replaced with the info from X10. I just printed it out on card stock and cut the pieces out. I can send this "Counter" file to anyone who wants it. Maybe I could even add the X10 counter info and post it on Starflung? Is that legal? The national symbols wouldn't be there so it wouldn't be exactly the same. With a few changes, and the addition of other forces (from the almanacs) like Heldann vs. Ethengar, etc. it could easily fit into the pre-meteor WotI events. If I have time to look it over at home, I could probably come up with alternate Alliance modifiers and such based on WotI. I'll look into it over the weekend. BTW, I won't have e-mail access until Monday. I'll respond to any replies then. Happy Gaming (My same hi-level PCs who defeated the Master back in 1987 will be in Alfheim this weekend trying to see if they can stop the Shadowelves. I highly doubt it...) Hasbro interactive was bought by Infogrames, but it's more of a transfer of majority voting stock than a real buyout.
